The Return of the King

The Return of the King
Author: J.R.R. Tolkien

The third part of the Lord of the Rings. The goal of the Fellowship of the Ring is to get the Ruling Ring to the Cracks of Doom so they can destroy it before it falls into the hands of the Dark Lord. The second book ended with Aragorn leading the men from Rohan back to Minas Tirith to face the war coming from Sauron and Frodo being taken by the orcs when he is so close to his mission.

One thing about the entire series that drove me a bit crazy was how so much time was spent with one storyline before going back to the other one. There was the cliffhanger at the end of the second book about Frodo being poisoned and then taken away by the orcs, but it starts with the huge war that Aragorn is leading. Pippin and Merry are separated, but both play a part in the War.

I admit at times, I couldn’t tell the difference between Pippin and Merry, since they were interchangeable to me. They weren’t as distinct as Frodo and Sam, so I was glad when the story came back to them. It was nice for Sam to be a hero finally to save Frodo. He knew all along that Gollum was not to be trusted, even when I felt sorry for the little guy at times.

The ending with all the hobbits exacting their revenge towards Sauron seemed a little over the top, but was still fun to read anyway.
