Garden State

Category: 2004, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 9:26 pm

The main guy from Scrubs wrote, directed, and stars in a story about a man who comes back home to New Jersey from L.A. when his mom dies and is reminded how much he likes his homestate.

This movie was highly amusing. Largeman (his last name) is drugged up on every medication out there due to his psychiatrist father so he hasn’t really had any real emotions in years. He deals with that, his relationship with his father, his mother dying, how he grew up, his friends, and starting a relationship with Natalie Portman.

That’s the main storyline of the movie which is nice enough, but I wouldn’t have enjoyed this movie as much as I did if it didn’t have so much other random weird junk going on too. There are funny bits and scenes that happen, not so much to further the storyline along, but to just have something weird and quirky happen. I can’t really explain any of them since they would not sound as funny as watching them, like the shirt matching the wallpaper and the guy that works at Medevil Times.

I did like seeing how he had no emotion whatsoever at the beginning of the movie, but at the end all his medication that he hadn’t been taking since he was back home had finally washed out of his system and he had a personality! It creeped on slowly throughout the movie, so it was very subtle.

Good stuff!

Secret Lives of Dentists

Category: 2003, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 8:22 pm

Can dentists' lives be exciting? Does it count if you are hallucinating about Denis Leary?

Well, I wrote a fabulous recap up there, so I'll have to do a better job about it here. It is about two married dentists and the husband suspecting his wife is having an affair. I really wanted to see this movie and it finally made it to the top of the Netflix list. Boy, I was very disappointed.

Denis Leary is his usual self. He's more annoying when he's a patient, but when Scott Campbell starts hallucinating that he's talking to the doctor and using him as his evil side of his conscience, he becomes more amusing. That's the only interesting part of the movie.

It is trying to show how their lives didn't turn out like they planned. They don't seem to really like each other as friends. They have a practice together, but don't drive to work together. They drive separately since he gets home way before she does and gets dinner ready for their three young daughters. She gets home later and later after "play practice" or some other reason on the weekends and he starts freaking out about who she is sleeping with and what's going on.

I would have thought that would have been a lot more interesting, but I just remember being annoyed by their youngest daughter over and over again. Since mom is never home, she likes dad best. When she hears his voice, she yells "Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad!" over and over again until he picks her up. And then there is the last 1/3 of the movie with the entire family being sick. It's just gross.

The ending was probably more realistic than movies usually are, but it wasn't very exciting. I was glad it was over though because I was tired of all the puking. Bleah!

American Gods

American Gods
Author: Neil Gaiman

What happens to gods when the world forgets about them? This is an epic novel about a man named Shadow getting released from prison and having his world turned upside down on him. You slowly learn more about Shadow’s life as the novel goes on and he becomes Mr. Wednesday’s right-hand man while they travel around the U.S. and prepare for a war brewing between the old world gods and the new world gods.

I enjoyed this book. I actually liked Neverwhere more, but I thought this was really good too. I liked the description of middle America from someone outside the United States describing it from the perspective of gods. I also liked the little history lessons of folklore from different cultures.

Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator

Category: 2003, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 10:29 pm

Documentary about the skateboarding trend in the 1980's and Mark "Gator" Rogowski who is in jail for murder.

I think you would only be interested in this movie if you skated or were interested in skating at one point in your life. I loved the little skater boys when I was in sixth grade through junior high (1985-1988 ) so I vaguely knew some stuff that was mentioned in this documentary.

It isn't the most exciting thing to watch though. It slowly built up Gator through interviews with people way back when and now, plus showing various clips of him throughout the 80's and 90's. The decline felt kind of rushed to me and then suddenly he killed someone and it was over. I guess there was no real explanation for it, but it still seemed like it just kind of ended.

What I got out of it was that Tony Hawk was the only smart person out of all the skating guys. They used to be all about doing tricks on half pipes in the 80's. Then street skating became big and a lot of skaters couldn't do the street tricks, like Gator. They sucked at it. They couldn't adapt. Tony Hawk seems to be the only one adapting to each new trend, and then sponsoring those up and coming skaters so his name is always out there and now he's just rolling in the dough.

Auto Focus

Biopic of Bob Crane from Hogan's Hereos starring Greg Kinnear and his mysterious death that still remains unsolved.

Greg Kinnear played Bob Crane as very skittish kind of man. I really don't know anything about Bob Crane so he might have been like that, but it was a tad unnerving to watch. Crane was way into sex–taking pictures of it, filming it–but hid it for a long time. Then he just didn't care anymore. The more people were offended by it, the more he kept saying he was normal. He had a friend named John Carpenter (not the director guy) who was beyond creepy.

This movie was just creepy. I was wondering if they were going to do more with the whole murder and not knowing who killed him and whatnot, but it just had a little voiceover at the end. This was an odd movie. It wasn't horrible, but I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone.

Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

Category: 2004, Movies, Reviewspiraflambe @ 10:30 pm

The princess must get married within 30 days or she will lose her control of her country.

Holy crap I must have been insane to think this would be a good movie. I forced my sons to go… I think they will have mental problems now.

I thought the first one was cute… almost tolerable… this one - if you are not an 8 year old girl - DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE!
