Van Helsing

Category: 2004, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 7:57 pm

Hugh Jackman runs around Prague, er Transylvania, hunting Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man.

I just watched this movie. I thought it was horrible! Dracula's wives were beyond annoying. One of them said, "Too bad, so sad" which made me say, "Did she really just say 'too bad, so sad'?" There were too many lines where I asked if they seriously just said what they just said.

Other times, I would say "Oh god, really?" Ugggg. I heard this movie had bad reviews, but I thought it would be a fun action movie. I didn't expect it to be beyond dumb.

I only liked the friar and Frankenstein. Oh and the DVD had bloopers. Those were amusing. Much better than the actual movie. Finally, I was very happy when the drama queen wives of Dracula were killed. Too bad it didn't happen sooner.

Swimming Pool

Category: 2003, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 8:05 pm

A London writer goes to her editor's house in the south of France to relax, but then his daughter shows up to wreck havoc. And then there is a murder involved somewhere.

This movie starts out very slow. Jer said about three times within the first 30 minutes that the movie was boring and lame. Then the daughter shows up and she has issues. It is still pretty slow going but stuff finally starts to happen. There is a twist at the end that makes you go, "Hey!" but not enough to completely save the movie.

After one of the times that Jer said the movie sucked, I said it wasn't as bad as 8 Women. He agreed with that. After the movie and credits were over, there was a bit on the cable channel about the director of the movie. It turns out he was the same director that made 8 Women! hahaha. The two movies were completely different, but I'm pretty sure Jer hates the director guy, even with the young girl in the movie being topless through most of it.

American Splendor

Category: 2003, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 8:14 pm

Biopic about Harvey Pekar, the author of the American Splendor comic book series.

I heard this movie was really good even though it didn't reach out and grab me as overall interesting looking when it was released. It was pretty good and entertaining but not completely awe-inspiringly wonderful. I think I'm making up words there.

Paul Giamatti was awesome. He totally became Harvy Pekar. Hope Davis was awesome as his wife too. She sounded just like her. How do I know all of this? Because the real people were in the movie too. Harvey narrates it at times and then it shows you when they are filming him reading his narration and just wandering around complaining in general. It was quite amusing.

I think my favorite parts were with his friend Toby. He was borderline austistic and self-proclaimed nerd. There were scenes where he talks about Revenge of the Nerds coming out that is hilarious. Other times it shows the real Harvey and Toby talking in between takes of their narration parts and you can see Paul Giamatti in the background cracking up at how they interact with each other. That's funny.

The movie pretty much follows Harvey's life from when he started making comic books to when he finally retires from his file clerk job that he never quit, even when he became semi-famous from his comics and appearances on David Letterman. He never made enough to quit his job so he worked until retirement age. There isn't much more to the story than that, so it's a little funny film about a grumpy guy.

I fell asleep the last five minutes of the movie cuz I'm a dork.

Chopper

Category: 2001, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 5:49 pm

Based on the true story of a legendary Australian criminal who wrote a best-selling autobiography in prison while serving a murder sentence.

Eric Bana is the guy that played The Hulk and Hector in Troy. He’s famous in Australia as a comedian. Didn’t know that. Anyway, this movie came out in 2000 in Australia and 2001 here. I can’t remember where I kept hearing about this movie, but I did somewhere so it ended up on my Netflix list.

This guy is completely insane starting from when he is in prison. I missed a bit of what was going on in the beginning since I was getting used to the Australian accents. It has slow dragging parts and then picks up when violent stuff happens. There is a lot of blood in this movie.

At some points, it is hard to tell what is real and what is made up since when Chopper relays stories about what happens, he changes things so did he kill someone or did somebody else? He claims he only ever hurt the scum of the earth but it isn’t like he was pure himself. His reasoning is…interesting at times.

My husband wondered if this guy was still alive and apparently he is still alive and insane. He has his own website. Reading it, he sounds just like the character in the movie so Eric Bana did a good job. Wacko movie.

Wimbledon

Category: 2004, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 9:40 pm

Paul Bettany was a rising tennis star that has been going downhill and he's about to retire after playing Wimbledon one more time. Kirsten Dunst is an up-and-coming tennis star who goes after him and improves his game in the process.

I'm not a big romantic comedy fan. Well, I like good romantic comedies, but most of them really suck. I thought this would fall in the sucky category, but I like Paul Bettany. Sometimes I like Kirsten Dunst and other times she annoys me. She was okay here. I think Paul Bettany helped me like the movie more than I might have. It did have predictable parts, but the chemistry between the two of them was good. I liked seeing them together. When they had their little spats, I was hoping they would get back together. I watched this on a Saturday morning right after waking up and I really think that is the best time to see it. You aren't really with it and it is all fluffy. It was cute though.

Taxi

Category: 2004, Movies, Reviewspiraflambe @ 8:21 pm

New York city cop loses his driver's license do to a few unfortunate accidents. In effort to be first on scene at a bank robbery he takes a taxi. The taxi so happens to belong to a female who aspires to be a Nascar driver. The bank robbery happens to be commited by 4 model-like women who hit three more banks. Due to wild circumstances the cop and the taxi-girl catch the robbers and save the day.

This movie had several funny parts. I didn't think that Queen Latifa and Jimmy Fallon had any chemistry at all. Now the guy they had playing her boyfriend/fiance' was gorgeous. (Henry Simmons)

LamW - 2 (was waiting for someone to show up.)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Category: 2004, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 8:02 pm

Jim Carrey finds out that his girlfriend has had their relationship erased from her memories, he decides to do the same. Of course, it doesn’t work out quite like he expected. Written by Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich).

I wanted to see this movie since it came out since Being John Malkovich and Adaptation were so messed up.

This movie is extremely messed up! We were laughing at it throughout, not so much because it was funny but laughing at it being so extremely wacky. You get to see his relationship with Kate Winslet as his memories are being erased and you get to see those memories being erased. Then he doesn’t want it to happen and things start going weird. The people erasing the memories are also bizarre and weird.

I don’t want to explain too much since it should be seen. It is a sweet movie and serious screwy at the same time. Fabulous!

P.S. Elijah Wood plays a big dork and I exclaimed that he can’t play cool after being a hobbit.

P.S.S. The potato people scared Jeremy.

Collateral

Category: 2004, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 2:41 pm

Tom Cruise plays a hitman that has to kill five key witnesses in a federal case in one night and he is holding Jamie Foxx hostage as his taxi cab driver for the mission.

I have stated before that I do not like Michael Mann movies, yet I always end up seeing them. His movies are so slow in parts and really drag out when they don’t need to be. He directed this movie too, so I was skeptical but I still wanted to see it.

This movie was much better than his other movies. First, I didn’t fall asleep during part of it. I almost did during an exciting club scene, but that’s only because I woke up at 5am that day. I made myself stay awake though since I knew something important was going to happen. It was really suspenseful and moved along very quickly. Jer guessed what was going to happen towards the end, but he’s good at guessing. Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise were really good too.
