P.S.

A college admissions officer runs across an application of someone striking a strong resemblance to her high-school sweetheart and true love that died 20 years earlier.

I enjoyed this movie but it seemed a tad short. It was a nice, sweet story that was very romantic without being sappy. Jer had a different opinion. He said that he really didn't want to watch miserable people living their miserable lives. Aw, the fun of different views on the same exact movie! hahaha. I thought they were overcoming their bad choices and getting on with being happy, but he disagreed.

The way the movie seemed short was that it just kinda ended as if it didn't know where else to go with the story. It gave you a hint of what was to come, but there is so much more to a story of someone who is 39 being attracted to a grad student. That wasn't really explored.

It's probably good it ended when it did though or Jer might have killed something. I do have to agree that the music in this movie was horrible. It was soft, contemporary crap music that made me want to strangle someone. They could have used good music that would have fit the mood just the same. I think that is why Jer really hated the movie. The bad music sunk into his subconscious.

Sideways

The weekend before a guy gets married, he goes out on a wine-tasting adventure with his best friend who has been depressed for two years. Directed by the guy who made Election and About Schmidt.

This was a nice, sweet movie, but I didn't think it was Best Picture material at all. I do think that Paul Giamatti deserved a Best Actor nomination, but he was snubbed. He's awesome in this movie and I've come to find that he's awesome in whatever movie he is in.

There are some definite funny parts in this movie that made me laugh out loud. They had nothing to do with the plot. They were just weird bits that are thrown in there and are very funny. It is a good character movie, but I never had the feeling of "Wow. This movie is great." while watching it, so that's why I don't think it was Best Picture material.

Young Adam

Ewan McGregor buddies up with a guy so he can sleep with his wife. Scandalous!

How disappointing that a movie filled with Ewan McGregor having sex many times over could be so completely boring. There's a mystery about a dead woman found floating in a Scottish river, but it isn't really a mystery. Even when you find out what happened and how someone else is blamed for it, you just don't care.

Ewan McGregor works on a barge with a married couple and starts an affair with the wife. Lord knows why since she is beyond scary and not attractive at all. I couldn't wait for him to get bored and leave. When he finally does, he apparently makes it a habit to sleep with married women. None of the women seem conflicted about the affairs either. They all seemed bored to death. Everyone seems bored in this movie, including me.

P.S. There are better nude shots of Ewan McGregor in Velvet Goldmine than this movie. He sure does like to be completely naked in movies, but no one is complaining about it.

Coffee & Cigarettes

Category: 2004, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 7:46 pm

A bunch of short pieces of film starring actors, musicians, and other famous people as themselves at times and characters at other times all discussing anything over coffee and cigarettes.

This movie was disappointing. I have liked Jim Jarmusch's other films before. They usually consist of a lot of talking and not much action, but I find them entertaining. This was in the same vein, but most of the talking bored me to death, even when it contained people I liked.

I could have done without the first half of the "movie". Each little scene consists of people talking about coffee and cigarettes and then usually something else. The beginning bits were boring. Roberto Benigni and Steven Wright talk. I love Steven Wright, but it was dumb. Steve Buscemi is in the next one with a twin brother and sister and it's also dumb. Iggy Pop and Tom Waits are next–awkward and dumb.

It continues on with some other people I don't know until Cate Blanchett. She's in a scene opposite herself. She's playing herself and her cousin. She's awesome. I kept forgetting it was the same person so she's a great actress. After that it was Meg and Jack White from the White Stripes. Their bit is pretty funny and they play off each other better since they know each other. The next one is my favorite with Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan. It is just really funny after a pretty slow build up that you think is going to suck, but ends up being great. The second to last bit, and the last good part, is GZA and RZA with Bill Murray. Very goofy and funny.

The last scene is with two old guys and is boring and dumb. I think you can quit watching after Bill Murray.

I'd give the movie a higher score if it had more bits like the last half, but the first part was just awful.
