Invisible Monsters

Invisible Monsters
Author: Chuck Palahniuk

When a fashion model who thinks she has everything is disfigured in an “accident”, she realizes how little she had and sets out to reinvent herself with her new friend.

It is completely insane and fun. It is like reading a soap opera. If you have read anything from Palahniuk before, then you’ll recognize the way he writes. He does have a distinct style. I haven’t read anything from him before where he takes the point of view of a beautiful woman who is now deformed because, as she says “birds ate my face.” There’s a funny story behind that, but it must be read to fully enjoy. 🙂

I knew I would enjoy the story, almost from the beginning when there were gunshots in the first page. A few pages in, I laughed out loud while reading the following passage:

“Just before Evie comes screaming down the stairs and shoots Brandy Alexander, what I did was pour out about a gallon of Chanel Number Five and put a wedding invitation to it, and boom, I’m recycling.”

I just found that hilarious.

After that bit, you get more back story to figure out what is going on with the main character, her gay brother who died of AIDs, her parents that love her brother more than her, even after he died, and her supposed best friend and former boyfriend—one of them who probably shot her in the face. It gets pretty graphic describing her face and what would need to be done for plastic surgery to actually get her back to having an almost normal face. It sounds extremely painful.

I thought it dragged slightly in the middle, but not for too long since the book itself isn’t that long. Once the full story came out, everything became crazier and crazier. The story turned into a soap opera that I didn’t want to end. I was sad when the book was over since I wanted to know more of the crazy shenanigans of the characters. They are all such loons!

I would recommend this book as a quick summer read. It almost borders on fluff, but it is extremely twisted fluff.
