February Love Song: The Stills

Category: Music,Random Songsvelveetahead @ 2:09 am

here’s your next love song!

The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Heart

Artist: The Stills
Song: Still in Love Song
Album: Logic Will Break Your Heart

It is a lovely little ditty about a delusional girl who is loved by a guy until he finally wakes up and realizes she is a waste of his time. :)

Still In Love Song

We were lovers, we were kissers
We were holders of hands; we were make-believers just losing time
You said you’d rather live in T.V. land and then say that you can but you don’t
that’s heartless and I will not cry

But I’m still in love
And I’m still in love… [3x]

you’re dreams of acting on screen. What do they mean?
You’ll be dancing senseless in your bedroom and
You find yourself out of a job and before too long
You’ll be selling lemonade to the overpaid

And I’m still in love… [5x]

I remember it was summer; I was out of my head but you would
you’re selfish and a waste of space

But I’m still in love
And I’m still in love… [6x]

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

Directed: Shane Black
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer

Robert Downey Jr. is a small-time thief who stumbles into an audition and gets cast as a detective. Val Kilmer is the gay detective who is showing him how to be believable in his new role.

Robert Downey Jr. narrates the movie which is an action picture,  a satire movie, as well as a love story thrown in there. It all works though. He is an entertaining narrator. He jumps around a bit while telling a story, but you don’t get lost. While narrating, there are a lot of in-jokes about the movie industry and action films in general. It is amusing without getting too cute.

I remember when Robert Downey Jr. was Mr. Hot Stuff and so charming. He does a great job playing a complete loser. You believe that no one would pay attention to him, even the girl he wish he had in high school. Val Kilmer is awesome as a guy who really doesn’t care about anyone else. I have no clue why his character is gay besides to be used as an excuse for some jokes and the scene where he kisses Robert. There are some very funny lines between the two of these guys.

I recommend this movie. It was a trip to watch. It isn’t the best thing in the world or anything earth shattering, but a fun movie that is very funny too.

The Jacket

Category: 2005,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 1:50 am

The Jacket
Directed: John Maybury
Starring: Adrian Brody, Keira Knightley

A man suffers from amnesia while accused of murdering a police officer. While locked in a mental institution, his mind takes him to the future where he finds out he is going to die if he doesn’t do something to stop it. WAT!

The movie makes more sense than the description. It is at least easier to understand, but still a very crazy movie. There is no real explanation about why he goes through time to the future, but it happens. The movie takes place in 1991 and 2007. When Adrian Brody is in the future, he finds out that he dies while in the mental institution and he tries to figure out how it happens. He doesn’t seem to want to stop it from happening, but just find out why.

Keira Knightley is also in the movie wearing tons and tons of eye makeup. Maybe she was preparing for her role in Domino. She is someone that Adrian’s character meets in 1991 and then falls for in 2007. It seems the more he knows about her, the more he wants to spend his time saving her life instead of his own. It is a nice thought, and I guess romantic notion, but the rest of the movie it just bizarre.

The doctor that administers the weird ass treatment doesn’t say how he came up with it and why he doesn’t perform it with all the patients. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays another doctor who seems to randomly be there and have a random story line that doesn’t tie together with everything else. There is also not a lot of time spent with why Adrian lost his memory that led him to the mental institution for a crime he didn’t commit.

It seems there are a lot of plot devices put into place with no explanation just to get to that little romantic story in the middle. It wasn’t a horrible movie, but it was very odd.

Grade: C+

Nationwide Releases

The Messengers
Directed: Oxide Pang
Starring: Dylan McDermott, Penelope Ann Miller

Children are more likely to see the paranormal than adults, so a teenage girl that can see some things tries to get her baby brother help her find out what is up with their spooky new house in the country.

RT Score: 17%

The Pangs keep it moving and deliver the ‘gotcha!’ moments, but a steady diet of mechanical scares is thin stuff.
- Maitland McDonagh
TV Guide’s Movie Guide

As I left the theater after seeing The Messenger I overheard a guy asking his date: “So, what was the message?” My thoughts exactly.
- Robin Clifford
Reeling Reviews

The Pang Brothers’ sense of style often overcomes the lack of substance in this derivative scarefest.
- Edward Douglas
ComingSoon.net

The Messengers borrows so heavily from The Amityville Horror, The Birds, The Grudge, Poltergeist, and others that it has no room left for anything of its own.
- James Berardinelli
ReelViews

The message of this creepy-ghost thriller is that no matter how talented the Hong Kong filmmakers may be, they’ll invariably be forced to make their first American movie an unimpressive, generic creepy-ghost thriller.

February Songs

Category: Music,Random Songsvelveetahead @ 6:23 pm

Since I decided to go with themes for my random songs, I was going to start out with fluffy dance songs that I like, but Amy wanted love songs for February. Fluffy songs will come later on, but for now I have picked out eight songs for this month so I’ll be talking about them twice a week to squeeze them all into February.

If you have any ideas for themes for future months, let me know about it!

here’s your first love song…

Mansun - Attack of the Grey Lantern

Artist: Mansun
Song: Mansun’s Only Love Song

For those that know me, know that I love Mansun. They are not everyone’s cup of tea though. Paul Draper, lead singer and writer, sings in a very high voice at times. Jeremy calls him whiny. I like it. This song could be one of the more annoying ones, but it is also one of my most favorite Mansun songs. I also have a fabulous story to go with it.

At my last job at Premia, there was a co-worker named David who was horrible. He ended up getting fired later on for stealing private company information, but before that happened he annoyed the crap out of me. I had my CD player in my cube, and would play my music quietly. I was in love with this CD at the time so I would play it over and over again day after day. It was quiet enough so that no one else could really hear it, but Paul Draper sang high enough in this song that David could hear a bit of it in the next cube. It would drive him crazy and he would always ask what that noise was. This made me very happy. And that is why this is a fabulous love song. :)

I’ll include the lyrics in case you would like to peruse:

Mansun’s Only Love Song

If I start this small debate
The centre of the universe is up for sale
If my melody should fall
The tune is unimportant as I said before
Or should I say it was the words, I should

Standing in grey lantern light
Mavis looking sexy through her dress it shines
Hiding in the vestry she recites her lines, she says

I can’t see you, I love you, I miss you
I can’t see you, I love you, I do

If I feel God watching me
I control the actions of his destiny
All my sentiments ring true
You feel him in the mirror laughing back at you
If I could tell you how it seems, I would

If I start this small debate
The centre of the universe is gone for sale
So my melody should fall
The tune is unimportant as I said before
If I could tell you how it seems, I would

Tomahawk: Mit Gas

Category: Bands,Musicvelveetahead @ 5:50 pm

Mit Gas
Released: October 30, 2001

Best songs:Capt. Midnight, May Day, Aktion F1413

This album has a more electronic feel to it. More synthesizers are used, and it loses some of the western-vibe that went with the first album. Mike still loves his megaphone throughout many songs. It seems to have more Mike influences with some odd sounding songs, but it is still fairly straight-forward compared to other Mike projects. It doesn’t have as many stand out songs as the first one album though.

While touring, they decided to play in cop and security guard outfits.

Song: Birdsong
Appropriately, the song has bird noises before kicking into the song itself. The song covers how people tell lies to each other, and how they need the lies to function like how a bird regurgitates when feeding its young.

Song: Rape This Day
I believe this was the only single released from the album. There was a video made for it, at least. It has a single guitar line through the verses of the song, while it explodes during the chorus. Jocks would be a fan of this song, even though it is making fun of them.

Song: You Can’t Win
Very minimal song instrument-wise. It could be about police brutality or just a racist police officer in general. The police like to start riots as an excuse to beat the crap out of anyone not white. When you think the song is over, it isn’t. More minimal sounds are made for another minute before moving onto the next song.

Song: May Day
Continuing with the police theme, it starts out sounding like police sirens a bit. The verses are sung in and out of a megaphone with the singing coming from one speaker for one line and out the other speaker for another one. Nice effect. It is also the first time on this album that I have run into some lyrics that I love: “I’m putting in my two weeks notice, as of two fucking weeks ago.”

Song: Rotgut
You really can’t beat the first line in the song, “In the scrotum of your dreams, you turn your first trick for free.” I guess that’s another way of saying the bottom of your dreams? The rest of the song is very visual in its lyrics too. It doesn’t have a lot of melody though so it isn’t one of my favorites.

Song: Capt. Midnight
I love this song the most. It would be the one I would save from the burning fire. The one thing that makes me crazy though is that I want it to repeat the chorus again. It is only sung once and the song is fairly short. I am waiting for it after the second verse, but then the song is over. So sad. :( As for the song, it seems to be about unrequited love and the one not getting what he wants is a tad angry about it.

Song: Desastre Natural
It is entirely in Spanish. It seems to be about a volcano. That must be the natural disaster. It’s a slow and pretty song.

Song: When the Stars Begin to Fall
Sung very quickly about a girl falling (or murdered?) and her boyfriend seems to think it should have been him.

Song: Harelip
It appears that Mike is singing from the point of view of a harelip that has been removed through surgery and how it feels about it. In case anyone was wondering.

Song: Harlem Clown
Not much of a song. Instrumental for the most part with a listing of musical artists towards the end. Nothing too special and I usually skip it.

Song: Aktion F1413
A robotic voice lists the basic principles of hand-to-hand combat. In between the principles is pretty singing. I really like the singing so I’ll listen to the crazy robotic voice in between. The song also reminds me of Mr. Bungle’s Merry Go Bye Bye since half way through the song is distorted noises and what sounds like record scratching. I do like the pretty singing though.
