MWG: Night of the Comet
Posted On June 20, 2007
We have started our Movie Watching Group (MWG). Marci is up first! She has picked Night of the Comet from 1984.
Netflix Synopsis: Earth has been ripped to shreds after a run-in with a killer comet, and those who have survived are in a fight for their lives in this campy cult classic. Valley Girl Reg (Catherine Mary Stewart) and her sister (Kelli Maroney) discover they’re two of the lucky few. But scientists are after them, and now they must run. Why? Because the researchers believe they need the blood of survivors to concoct a drug that can save them all from further ruin.
RT Score: 83%
Here is our group that needs to watch the movie and review it: Amy, Marci, Sharon, Jim, Keiran, Lindsay, Jer and me. Review away!

I just sent a movie back today, so I should have it Tuesday or so.
I sent my movie back today so I should have this one on Wed or Thu. I know two people have seen it, yet no reviews. *tiny tear*
So I watched the movie while I was on the treadmill this weekend. I loved the 80’s hair and fashion, especially the cheerleading outfit, and I was very happy when they went to the store finally – I was waiting for that scene! I also liked the decor at the radio station.
Unfortunately, this movie also brought up some disturbing feelings for me, here’s a recap of me sharing them in irc:
Aimi – I am not sure how I feel about the movie
Aimi – it brought up a lot of disaster panic
Aimi – like bird flu feelings
Velveeta – uh-oh!
Velveeta – i suggest going full on crazy in your review
Velveeta – that would be hilarious
Aimi – so then I started thinking about how I have not finished my be prepared plan for disasters
Aimi – then I was thinking about a emp
Aimi – and how my car would not work
Aimi – so maybe I need a bike
Aimi – and a little cart to tow with the bike, for Mo and Bella
Velveeta – hahahaha
Velveeta – all of this would make for an excellent review
so this was not the most calming movie for me. I think this movie was also confused – did it want to be funny? serious? romantic? I do not know.
The other weird thing was I kept thinking that some of the “extras” were famous people – like the guard who helps the kids off the helicopter, that looked like Kyle MacLachlan to me. And one of the nurses looked like Diane Lane. Perhaps the packaging had some lsd on it and I was on a little trip, it’s hard to say cuz sometimes I’m crazy au natural!
So did I like this movie? I’m going to have to say no, perhaps if I had memories of watching it before or if I was not such a spaz about the disaster thing I would have liked it more.
I’m sorry to say that my opinion of the movie didn’t improve much from the first time I watched it when it came out. I had rented it and watched it with my mother. We found it annoying and stupid during the time that it came out, and it wasn’t even because of the fabulous 80’s clothes and hair. That would have all been the norm at the time I watched it.
This time, I had hopes that it was a spoof that I just didn’t catch the first time around. It was promising with the goofy voice over explaining the comet. It was over the top. It also started the movie off right with explaining the comet, it happening almost immediately and the main character, Reggie, discovering something was just not right in L.A. the next morning. That didn’t last though. There were so many parts of the movie that dragged, which completely killed the momentum. When one scene had Reggie telling about her family to another survivor, I was bored.
I did laugh at the people in the movie. I recognized Reggie as the girl in Weekend at Bernies. Then I realized she must have only made two movies in the 80s and that’s it. I laughed at Hector being Chakotay from Star Trek: Voyager being the love interest in this movie. I also enjoyed the awesome 80s clothes, especially when they were in the shopping mall. Oh boy!
For being a zombie movie, there were a definite lack of zombies. I remembered there being more, but I guess I added some in my memory. I think more zombies popping up at random times would have kept the movie moving along.
One thing I did love was the cheerleader who couldn’t make a getaway until Hector changed the radio away from a country song. I was thinking the same thing!
Rating: C-
This movie really stuck with me in the 80’s and still does now.
I just like silly things and this was silly! Only in LA would you find high school girls that can operatate mac 10’s and any other gun you could pickup.
Hector (Commander Chakotay) was so cute in his younger days… looks much better now with his Star Trek face tattoo!
I just love zombie movies. When I watched this back in the day, it seemed more scary. This last viewing I found myself wanting more zombies.
I did enjoy all the 80’s music. I just have to say it would be freaking awesome to find myself and a friend being the only girls in LA and be able to dance around a mall half way naked to Lauper’s Girls Just Want to Have fun!
So in the 80’s when I saw this movie I would give it an A! This year, I would have to give it a B- =(.
I will leave you with my favorite line from the movie. “I’m not crazy, I just don’t give a fuck!”
See you later….. off to see Santa.

Wow… I remember seeing this on HBO but I don’t remember thinking it was scary then and definitely don’t now! My son, Erik, left when the trash guy hit the Larry. So pretty much in the beginning. I couldn’t help but think – where the heck did they get guns without going far from the radio station. And how did Hector go from having a revolver to a Magnum?
Hector draws a security/military looking dude away from the compound with “do you like girls” good grief. And the whole “great outfit” right after she almost shoots her sister.
And Reggie always had perfect hair!
Anyway silly movie.
Remember the fate of civilization lies upon us.
What I have learned from this movie is that sfx light turns people to dust, boys always ruin a fun day at the mall, and zombie kids are creepy, and never cross the street on a a light.
Other than that I enjoyed the big hair and how it never fell flat during the whole movie even without hairspray! The zombies, the few there were were not scary, and the acting was actually decent compared to other 80’s horror/suspense that I remember seeing when I was young, so that is a good thing.
Very silly movie. I can never get the time spent watching this movie back and that makes me sad. I will have my revenge though!
