Hot Fuzz

Hot Fuzz

Directed: Edgar Wright
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost

The best cop in London has such a great arrest record that he is moved to a small, crime-free town so he won’t embarrass all the city cops.

Even though I loved Shaun of the Dead, I was wary of this movie. I enjoy a good action movie as much as the next person, but I wasn’t sure if a parody of buddy-cop action movies was going to be all that funny. The trailers for this movie do not do it justice. They also do not give away some of my favorite parts of the movie, which is good.

I found this movie as funny as Shaun of the Dead. Some of my favorite parts were little throwaway jokes. There were quite a few of them. One near the beginning involving Nicholas Angel, the best cop in London, going to find his ex-girlfriend who is working a crime scene, but mistakes someone else for her had me laughing when the joke happened. Then as the scene continued, I would just start laughing all over again thinking about it. I just found it really funny.

Sharon’s Chili

Category: Food,Recipespiraflambe @ 6:49 pm

I was looking for a chili recipe and really couldn’t find one with ingrediants I liked. So I took what I liked from various areas and came up with this. My son’s even liked it. I serve it with Corn Bread muffins and Cheese.

¾ lb Ground Sausage (country style)

2lbs Steak cut in bite size pieces

¼ lb Bacon – cut in pieces

1 Diced Red Onion (medium – large)

½ a bloom approx 6 pieces Minced fresh garlic

2 small cans Minced Green chili

1 large Can of Diced Tomatoes

2 cans Kidney Beans

2 cans Canned Pinto Beans

3 tbs Garlic Salt

3 tbs Black Pepper

1 tsp Chili Powder

Place Dutch oven on coals to pre-heat about 10mins. Add coals as necessary to keep high. Brown Bacon. Sauté onions and garlic in the bacon with the bacon grease. When onion is tender add ground sausage. Crumble and stir until brown. Add steak cubes – turn occasionally until done. Add Tomatoes and Green Chilis – let come to a simmer. Stir in beans gently so not to smash them. Stir in seasonings. Cover, and place 8 – 10 coals on lid – let come to a boil, about 30 – 45 minutes stirring occasionally.

I know this says dutch oven – but I have done it on the stove top in a pot – basically it needs to cook at med-high heat for about 30 – 45 minutes once all the meats are browned and all ingrediants are added. This recipe easily serves 6. (more likely 8 )

Cryptonomicon

Category: Booksvelveetahead @ 12:21 am

Cryptonomicon
Author: Neal Stephenson

Epic novel weaving three generations of men and women with cracking code, WWII and encryption of data.

This wasn’t a quick read. There were so many details, and the explanations so intricate, that I didn’t want to skim over it and miss something. The story jumps around from the WWII era to present times, and covers the stories of many different people. With such an epic story, it needs to be read slowly and absorbed so you can remember some little detail later on in the book. It is also one monster of a book. I was intimidated by it when I started it, and became increasingly intimidated by it as I moved toward the middle of the book because I was reading it so slowly. I don’t read books slowly unless I am not enjoying them. I was enjoying it though.

In the beginning, the story concentrated on three main characters: Bobby Shaftoe, a U.S. Marine in WWII; Lawrence Waterhouse, a mathematician who works for the military during WWII; and Randy Waterhouse, grandson of Lawrence who is also building a crypt of data in order to make tons of money for his company.

I loved Shaftoe. He was blunt and hilarious. He reminded me of Kaile the entire time. I loved that when he ran into Waterhouse, he hated him with all his talking. He was a man of action, not of words. I was always entertained when the story was focusing on him. I loved it when he unsuccessfully tried to drown himself because he thought he was about to be caught by Nazis.

The parts with Lawrence Waterhouse were a bit dry at times. They were the parts that I had to slow down to understand what he was talking about with all the encryption. I enjoyed that an actual historical person, Alan Turning, was a character in the book that Waterhouse interacted with in college. While it was a struggle to get through some of the encryption parts, since that is not a major interest of mine, the rest of the storyline involving him kept my interest. I knew the encryption parts were a major part of the story, so I didn’t want to skim, but understand what was going on. I laughed at the parts where he was building the first computer, especially since he made RAM with tubes.

Randy Waterhouse was starting a company with some friends to make tons of money by creating electronic money and a crypt of data. This leads him to the Philippines and meeting America Shaftoe, the granddaughter of Sgt. Shaftoe. These two are hilarious when they decide they are attracted to one another, yet can’t have normal conversations with one another.

While Goto Dengo is only superficially introduced in the beginning, his story comes in somewhere towards the middle. I loved his storyline, especially the areas of him trekking through the jungle, hiding from cannibals, being sneaky while digging tunnels, and other adventures.

I enjoyed the last half of the book more since all the various storylines start coming together, people from all generations and areas interact with one another, and it finally comes to the big conclusion. I was actually waiting for it continue, even after it was done, and so very long. It was that good that I could have kept reading about the various adventures of everyone involved.

Top Chef: Family Favorites

Category: Recaps,Top Chef,TVvelveetahead @ 12:00 am

Top Chef: Miami
Channel: Bravo
Day/Time: Wednesday, 10/9c

While the episode started out very interesting with the seafood quickfire challenge, almost all the chefs stumbled with the family favorites. How snobby were the chefs when they stared at the plates in horror? I know some of them might not have eaten the dishes since they were from South Africa or Jamaica, but that wasn’t everyone. Did they not remember being a kid? I love the fancy food that they make and want to eat it all, but I also love sloppy joes! Also, I started to feel like I was the only person on the planet that had heard of chicken a la king. It’s cream of mushroom soup, peas, and chicken on toast or biscuits. Yum! It would have been a tough one to make healthy though.

Quickfire Challenge

The guest judge for the episode was Alfred Portale who owns the Gotham Bar and Grill. One contestant commented that he is a master of plating food, and sometimes his dishes are so pretty, you don’t want to eat them. He oversaw the Quickfire Challenge which featured Miami seafood, such as scallops, crayfish and conch. Each person had 30 seconds and a net to scoop out what they wanted from a huge task. Hung was up first, and appalled everyone with how much he was scooping out of the tank. I would have thought everyone would have done that so was it appalling that it happened or that it is Hung doing it? It was rude when he dropped the crayfish on the ground and just left the little guy there. Toss him back in for a few seconds before someone else takes him out to eat him. ;) Well, I guess there was no hope for the crayfish either way.

Rescue Me: Commitment

Category: Recaps,TVvelveetahead @ 3:43 pm

Rescue Me
Channel: FX
Day/Time: Wednesday, 10/9c

Poor Jerry. He thought he had a second chance at life with being healthier than ever and getting along with his son, and he did! It just wouldn’t be as chief of the firehouse. He had to know he would retire some day, didn’t he? Maybe he always hoped he would go out as a hero in a fire and wouldn’t have to deal with actual retirement. He wasn’t really retiring, but he didn’t seem to deal with the thought of being behind a desk for the rest of his job.

I knew something was up when he was given the golf clubs and he had a look on his face that it was a very nice gift, but completely wasted on him. At the time, I took it as he was never going to use them since he wasn’t going to deal with the transition well right away. Then he was swinging the clubs and I thought he was actually enjoying it. I guess he was, but not enough to continue.

Moving onto others, while I have always found Colleen annoying, I did find myself agreeing with her reasons for running away from home. She found a place where she has a stable environment instead of the dysfunctional mess of home. What was up with Lou’s face when Tommy went back to get his beating from the boyfriend? It seemed like he either thought it was sad, even though it was his idea or he was thinking about something in his own life. I didn’t make the connection though. Tommy didn’t get what he wanted out of it though. His daughter didn’t come to his aid or defense, yet yelled at her dad for hurting her boyfriend’s hands (even though he was the only one punching) since he had a gig that night.

I am wondering if Janet is going to start having postpartum depression with her crying about the baby crying and fussing non stop. It was like she never had kids before. Maybe it had been too many years. Maybe she thought she was done with it. Maybe she realized that she can’t replace Connor. I just feel like something bad is going to happen there. The baby not crying when she was criticizing Tommy was funny.

I felt bad for Mike when Tommy can’t have a normal conversation with him without fearing that everyone thinks he is gay. Can he not get over that by now? I did love his response to the guy who asked him if he wanted to take it outside. “No, it is cold out there.”

I am not like Nona. I’m not sure why she is so aggressive. Is Tommy that much of a catch? No. Even if he was, if he isn’t interested, move on. She is becoming tiresome and I hope she disappears soon.
