TV: Week of Sep 30

Category: News, TV, Upcomingvelveetahead @ 7:49 pm

I didn’t make this post last week since it would have been insane with the amount of new shows. There aren’t as many shows premiering this week, so here you go.

New Shows

Cavemen
Channel: ABC
Time: 8/7c
Premieres: October 2
Cast: Bill English, Nick Kroll, Sam Huntington, John Heard, Kaitlin Doubleday, Stephanie Lemelin

Pushing Daisies

Movies Opening Sep 28

Category: 2007, Movies, Openingvelveetahead @ 1:37 am

The movies are very international this week. There are two that take place in India and one each in Saudi Arabia and China.

Nationwide Releases

The Kingdom
Directed: Peter Berg
Starring: Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper
Trailer

Synopsis: An American compound in Saudi Arabia is blown up so U.S. military move in and one of their own is taken hostage.

My Take: I’m very picky about the war movies I want to see, but this one looks good.

RT Score: 53%
RT Consensus: While providing several top-notch action scenes, The Kingdom ultimately collapses under the weight of formula and muddled politics.

Fall TV Preview - Thursday

Category: TV, Upcomingvelveetahead @ 12:51 pm

What I’ll Be Watching

I was disappointed with what I saw during the trailers of Big Shots, so I won’t be checking that out. That means that I’ll be watching what I watched last year. The only difference is that L&O: Criminal Intent moved to USA. It conflicts with other things I watch at 10pm, but it reruns so I can catch a later showing. I’ll be watching My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, and Smallville during the first hour. The second one will be CSI, Supernatural, The Office and Scrubs. I usually catch CSI in reruns since they are the easiest to find. The last hour is ER and Without a Trace.

What new shows look good to you? What returning shows will you continue watching? Any shows you giving up on?

Top Chef: Classic Ingredients

Category: Recaps, TVvelveetahead @ 10:17 pm

Top Chef: Miami
Manhattan Project

At the end of this episode, I really had no idea who was going home. I thought it was going to Dale or Sara at various times and would have not been surprised either way. I was not overly impressed with Sara most of the competition until she was an executive chef for that one challenge. Then I liked her and thought she might make it, but then after that, she went back to just being her usual weird self that wasn’t overly creative. I have always liked Dale, but I don’t think he’ll be the winner. I am really rooting for Casey to win now. I think it will be between her and Hung at this point.

Movies Opening Sep 21

Category: 2007, Movies, Openingvelveetahead @ 12:34 am

Nationwide Releases

Sydney White
Directed: Joe Hussbaum
Starring: Amanda Bynes, Sara Paxton
Trailer

Synopsis: An updated take on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but in college.

My Take: I’m not sure why the girl who seems to hate all the blonde sorority girls was trying to get in there in the first place. It also doesn’t look anything like college.

RT Score: 38%
RT Consensus: Amanda Bynes is charming, but Sydney White is a poorly adapted take on Snow White, relying on tired ethnic stereotypes laughs.

What I’ll Be Watching

Another night with tons of stuff that I want to watch. I know I’ll be watching Pushing Daisies for the first hour. In the second, I’ll be checking out Bionic Woman and Private Practice. In the third hour, I want to watch everything. I think I would choose Dirty Sexy Money first, then Life, and I know I can catch CSI:NY in reruns if needed.

Pilot Preview

Category: Shows, TVvelveetahead @ 7:47 pm

I downloaded the four pilots that NBC made available at Amazon Unbox. Jer also found the pilot for The Big Bang Theory as an added thing on TiVo so we watched all five pilots this weekend.

Chuck
Channel: NBC
Time: 8/7c
Premieres: September 24
Cast: Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strzechowski, Adam Baldwin, Joshua Gomez, Sarah Lancaster
Trailer

Synopsis: A supervisor of the Nerd Herd at the Buy More store, Chuck unwittingly downloaded thousands of encrypted images filled with government secrets into his brain when he opened an email (have to watch out for those attachments!). People are out to get him and others are trying to protect him. Chuck’s life just got a lot more exciting, but he’s not sure that’s what he wants.

I really enjoyed this one. I found it very charming and cute without being too coy. I didn’t roll my eyes once. I giggled mostly at it when it was over the top, but it was campy in a good way. It knew it was having fun. Chuck was great and the girl spy was very good too. I also liked his dorky friend who just doesn’t know when he’s overstayed his welcome, yet he’s never offended when anyone tells him to go. I liked the little joke about Chuck’s sister’s boyfriend being called Captain Awesome since he is always saying everything is awesome. Adam Baldwin’s character wasn’t too exciting. I was hoping he’d be funnier, but he’s playing it pretty straight. I hope he gets to loosen up a bit in future episodes. I do recommend it.

Muse: Wall of Sound

Category: Concerts, Musicvelveetahead @ 8:10 pm

Muse

Rose Garden - Theatre of the Clouds
Monday, September 10

After seeing Muse for the third time, I think they get better and more impressive each time. The first time was at a tiny, narrow club that no longer exists. I knew they were playing stadiums in England, so it was rare to see them in a place so small. It sold out and I ended up watching them from the side of the stage, which isn’t the best place to see them. The second time was at Roseland, which was awesome and much better place to see them. This time, it was at the Rose Garden. Since it was at the Theatre of the Clouds, it was only the half the size of the arena. It wasn’t sold out, but it was very close. They filled up the entire arena with their sound. Keiran tried to explain before how they use a whole bunch more music channels than other bands use, which I don’t know what that means exactly but it seems that they are loud, but not noisy. Every space is filled with music, which is amazing coming from just three guys.

Marci and I arrived right when it started. We had no idea who was the opening band. We found out at the t-shirt stand that it was Juliette Lewis and the Licks. We heard her screeching in the arena. I asked Marci if she wanted to go watch or search for beer. Surprisingly, we hung out in the beer garden until she was done. We heard two cover songs. I forget the first one we heard, but she sang True Colors later on. It didn’t sound good.

We went to our seats right after Juliette left the stage. We had good seats in the first level of reserved seats off to the left of the stage. The lead singer wore a red suit with white sneakers. The bassist and drummer didn’t have as snazzy of outfits. There was a screen behind the band to show images and videos. My favorite video was during Supermassive Black Hole where robots that looked like they could have been in I, Robot dancing away. There was also the big panels of lights, that are red in the picture up above. That was the best picture from my cell phone. The rest were much blurrier. There were lights on the grand piano that was rolled out for all the songs that had piano. The top of the piano had light panels in it tied to the piano keys. With each key he hit, parts of it would light up.

They played the songs I wanted to hear, which were Time Is Running Out, Supermassive Black Hole and Butterflies and Hurricanes. The guys behind us loved what they played. They would announce after almost every song, “They didn’t play that one last time.” They were very excited. Marci was also loving it. I danced and danced and danced. It was good fun!

Fall TV Preview - Tuesday

What I’ll Be Watching

The only new show that looks good to me is Reaper. That show looks really funny so I’ll be checking it out. I’ll also continue to watch NCIS, House and L&O: SVU. I only watched half of Nip/Tuck last season, but I’m intrigued enough with their move to L.A. that I’ll see if I like this new season when it starts up later on in October.
