Top Chef: Good Airplane Food?

Top Chef: Miami
Snacks on a Plane

Good news! I finally found a way to take a screen capture and turn it into an image so I can share even more pictures of the yummy, and sometimes scary, looking food. It was not working before so I would only grab what I could find on the Top Chef website, but had to find a way to do it since they had a lack of pictures this week.

Tom mentioned during the show that they are expecting first-class results out of all the chefs at this point in the competition. I agree and thought of the stuff they were serving surprising. When they admitted certain side dishes were afterthoughts, I’m wondering why they are still there. I think some of them are being worn out and their desire to be there is not as strong as it once was, while others are ramping up to their full potential. It should be an interesting final run to the end of the season.

Quickfire Challenge

Padma woke up all the contestants at 6am to make her breakfast in their apartment. The entire living room area was set up like a kitchen with Top Chef pantry items. They each had a Breville Blender at a table, along with a tiny cutting board and a small burner with a small skillet. Not a lot of room to make anything, but about as much room as I have in my kitchen, so I know it can be done! They had 20 minutes to make it. No one had a chance to change, so they got to make everything in their pajamas. Hung knocked over a bottle of truffle oil right away so there was broken glass on the floor. Broken glass is bad, but I’m glad they knocked over some truffle stuff since haven’t we had enough truffle anything in this competition? I think it was a metaphorical send off of Hung and his love for everything truffle.

Movies Opening Sep 14

Category: 2007,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 1:12 am

It is Evan Rachel Wood week with two of her movies opening at the same time, King of California and Across the Universe.

Nationwide Releases

The Brave One
Directed: Neil Jordan
Starring: Jodie Foster, Terrence Howard
Trailer

After a brutal attack where a woman almost dies and her fiance does die, she decides to become a vigilante, going after bad men on the streets at night in order to deal with her fear.

RT Score: 42%
RT Consensus: Magnetic performances between Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard can’t quite compensate for The Brave One‘s problematic and unconvincing eye-for-an-eye moral.

It’s a throwback girl-with-a-gun exploitation tale, as well as an evolved feminist fable; and an impeccable dissection of gun control, as well as a wicked mockery of NRA mentality.
-Phil Villarreal
Arizona Daily Star

Everything about Foster’s ocular intensity is riveting, but little in this hushed vigilante drama makes sense.
-Lisa Schwarzbaum
Entertainment Weekly

Regardless of the artistry involved, The Brave One ultimately never really strays from the same moral low road as Death Wish.
-Ken Fox
TV Guide’s Movie Guide

The Brave One might have been honest, perceptive, and troubling. Instead, it becomes aimless revenge porn.
-Brian Webster
Apollo Guide

Despite some quality performances, from both Foster and her co-star, Terrence Howard, The Brave One is every bit as ludicrous and every bit as wrong-headed and distasteful as those other [vigilante] films.

Fall TV Preview – Monday

What I’ll Be Watching

I’m more excited about the new shows on this night, plus I have a lot of stuff that I’ll keep watching. The TiVo will be busy. Shows that I’m going to check out: Chuck, Aliens in America, Samantha Who, K-Ville, Journeyman. Shows I’ll keep watching: Everybody Hates Chris, Heroes, CSI:Miami. I have to figure out if I’ll continue to watch Prison Break. We haven’t watched the last half of the second season. I can put up with it being ludicrous and not believable, but it was getting boring. I missed the tension of the first season.

If I had to choose only one show for each hour, I’d go with NBC for the entire night: Chuck, Heroes and Journeyman. For the first hour, Chris and Aliens will most likely be found in reruns during the summer and Prison Break plays on Fox.com, I think. For the second hour, K-Ville would be found on Fox.com most likely and ABC.com will be showing Samantha Who? For the third hour, CSI:Miami can be found in reruns very easily.

What new shows look good to you? What returning shows will you continue watching? Any shows you giving up on?

Top Chef: Sea-Faring Appetizers

Top Chef: Miami
Chef Overboard

Previously I complained about the team challenges, but I like them more now. I like them when the chefs can still individually showcase the food they make, but I also like how it shows if the chefs can lead too. It made me a fan of Sara after the last episode since I thought she did an awesome job as an executive chef, while other people that I have thought would be good leaders just don’t step up to the plate.

Quickfire Challenge

The guest judge for the episode was Micahel Schwartz, the chef and owner from Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink. He’s touted as an up-and-comer in Florida cuisine. Padma asks him his advice on what to make for people in the area and his sage advice was making food that looks and taste great. Fabulous, specific advice!

Music Fest NW

Category: Concerts,Musicvelveetahead @ 3:21 pm

This was my first time checking out Music Fest NW after many years of meaning to go, but not making it. I wanted to go back when it was NXNW. I finally decided to do it this year. I tried to see Spoon on Thursday night, but was not aware that how the whole thing with wristbands and tickets worked. I was used to how the Portland International Film Festival works. If you bought a pass to the entire thing, you had first chance to go into a show. Then they let people that just showed up purchase tickets.

That’s not how it works with this thing. I had a wristband, but that was not a guarantee to seeing a show. I missed out on Spoon because of this. :( The line of wristband people was huge. They were letting all the people that had tickets already go in. Then they would let wristband people in if anyone with tickets left since it was at capacity. The worst part was they were still selling tickets at the box office. Why? If they didn’t buy them beforehand, don’t sell anymore and let the wristband people in! Very rude. The line for Spoon went down the length of the building, around the corner, and down the length of that block. I was there an hour before the show started, but I knew all the people that were inside did not buy tickets to see the opening bands. They were there for Spoon, so it would have been impossible for me to make it is. Very sad, but I missed them.

After that sad night, I knew I would have better luck on Friday night since I had made a plan to see smaller bands. I had listened to all the music on the schedule page and decided I would be in a dancing mood that night. I picked out a powerpop/rock band first, and the rest of the bands were dance-oriented.

Sketchy Ted

Ash Street Saloon
8pm

A very well-dressed band with very catchy tunes. The lead singer is an East Coast transplant, but created his band in Portland. There weren’t that many people there since it was one of the early time slots for bands, but the few people there seemed very into the band. I was as impressed with them live as I was from what I heard on MySpace earlier. They have a new CD coming out. I think I’ll get it. I also got some free Pomegranate Rock Star from girls in micro mini skirts. I don’t like energy drinks, but it was free so I drank it. It actually tasted pretty good! It was just like juice. It also made me hyped up after my fancy Pabst. I drank it on my way out the door to head to the next show.

Movies Opening Sep 7

Category: 2007,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 10:34 pm

Jer and I went on a haunted tour of New Orleans when we visited a few years back, yet we did not run into the ghost of a hatchet man. Imagine that. On another note, the last Certified Fresh movie was Superbad, but there is finally another one this week with 3:10 to Yuma.

Nationwide Releases

Shoot ‘Em Up
Directed: Michael Davis
Starring: Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti
Trailer

A black ops-type guy sees that a woman and her child are a target of a killing and stop it from happening, which makes him the target of the guys that were trying to kill her and the baby.

RT Score: 64%
RT Consensus: As preposterous and over-the-top as Shoot ‘Em Up may be, its humor and non-stop action make for a very enjoyable film.

Not one second of the film is anything other than ludicrous, which is exactly why it rocks.
- Phil Villarreal
Arizona Daily Star

Smith, in other words, does exactly what you’d expect the hero of a bloody, trashy, volcanically depraved action movie to do. He just does it a little bit…more so, and that’s the rollicking good joke of Shoot ‘Em Up
- Owen Gleiberman
Entertainment Weekly

This wet dream for action junkies leaves out logic and motivation — you know, all the boring stuff.
- Peter Travers
Rolling Stone

It’s funny without being toothless, adrenaline turbocharged without being mean, and utterly deranged in the best sense of the word.
- Maitland McDonagh
TV Guide’s Movie Guide

It’s hard to get too worked up about a film whose very title announces its maker’s intent.
- Chuck Wilson

Monty Python’s Spamalot

Category: Theatervelveetahead @ 9:36 pm

Monty Python’s Spamalot

The 2005 Tony award-winning Best Musical is touring the U.S. so I dragged Jeremy to it this past weekend. I found out Tom was a fan so we all went together. Poor Jeremy was stuck in the middle between Tom and me who were both mega dorks about everything. It started with the program that had the first half talking about a Finland play with a moose trainer. I would laugh and point at things, even though Jeremy had his own program to read. Then Tom would do the same, so he was getting it from both sides. He tried not to kill us.

It turns out the rest of the audience was the same as us. We were all fans of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which is what this musical is based from. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but any parts of the musical that matched the movie would make me happy. I was surprised at how much of the actual dialogue from the movie made it into the play. It made me quite happy. It also made other audience members happy too, since they would cheer after their favorite lines.

It had all the major scenes in the movie except for Sir Bedevere’s scene with the witch. I do love that scene, but it was missing. I think they could have squeezed it in there, but it was not meant to be. There were a lot of other things added too, mostly so they could make songs out of it. I was worried about the songs, since sometimes I don’t always catch what is being sung, and I did miss some of it, but I caught the gist of what was going on. Also, there was other funny visual stuff to pay attention to while the singing was going on. It all fit.

In case anyone ever sees it on tour or playing in Las Vegas or Broadway, I won’t spoil some of the surprises, but they were over the top and hilarious. I think my favorite was the extended French taunting scene. It’s my favorite scene in the movie, and it went on even longer to even funnier effect.

I don’t know how well this play would work for someone that is not a fan of the movie. If you don’t find the movie funny or even amusing, then you won’t have the sense of humor for this play. If you are a total geek about the movie, you will love it.

Fall TV Preview – Sunday

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 10:26 pm

I had started to do this around the upfronts made to advertisers in May, but there were not a lot of trailers and information out at that time, so I stopped. Since then some changes have been made to shows, so I decided to wait until closer to the actual official start of Fall TV season to do it properly. I’m going to break it down day by day since you need to see what something is playing against to really know if you are going to watch it or not. Unless you are a crazy person like me with multiple televisions and TiVos, then you can watch all that you want, no matter when it is on. :)

I don’t think I’ll be watching any of the new shows. I’ll continue to watch Simpsons, Desperate Housewives, Cold Case, Dexter and Brothers & Sisters. I’m trying to decide if I should continue to watch Shark. I was getting pretty bored of it at the end of last season.

What new shows look good to you? What returning shows will you continue watching? Any shows you giving up on?

New Shows

Torchwood
Channel: BBCA
Time: 9/8c
Premiered: Saturday, Sep 8
Trailer: You Tube

Captain Jack appeared in five episodes of Doctor Who before leaving on his own journey, which was leading Torchwood. It is an organization that uses alien technology to capture aliens trying to attack Earth.

TV News

Private Practice
On September 19th, ABC will show a one-hour special, Come Rain or Come Shine: From Grey’s Anatomy to Private Practice. It is unclear about whether it is an edited version from the two-hour “premiere” that was shown on Grey’s Anatomy or if it is a way to get people caught up with what happened in case they never watched Grey’s Anatomy.

Scott Baio
A second season of Scott Baio is 45..and Single has been ordered. It will be filmed this fall. The first season ended up Scott Baio “graduating” from his life coach and committing to his girlfriend. She surprises him with the news she’s pregnant. The second season will follow him preparing for fatherhood.

South Park
Trey Parker and Matt Stone agree to three more seasons of South Park as well as creating a digital animation studio with Comedy Central for new animation projects.

ER
Busy Philipps will be leaving ER this upcoming season during the second episode. Her character will go off on a Christian mission, so it leaves the door open for her return.

Heartland
TNT has canceled Heartland. It did not do well in the ratings after The Closer or before it. The audience that did watch it skewed too old for the advertisers’ tastes.

Next Great American Band
FOX’s upcoming reality show, The Next Great American Band has announced its judges: John Rzeznik (from the Goo Goo Dolls), percussionist Sheila E. and Australian TV personality Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson. Dominic Bowden (host of New Zealand Idol) will host. It premieres October 19th.

Viva Laughlin
Not necessarily good news for upcoming fall show Viva Laughlin, the executive producer has left, even though he will retain his title in the credits. Tyler Bensinger and Steven DeKnight have been promoted to the new executive producers and show runners.
