I Am Legend

I Am Legend

Directed: Francis Lawrence
Starring: Will Smith

One man is the only survivor of a biological attack that has turned other people into zombies.

Will Smith shows his age in this movie. I have no idea if the gray in his hair is real or added, but it was just enough to show that he is trying to mature beyond his usual action flicks. He is trying to combine the big action movie with a little bit of thinking, like one of the Jason Bourne movies. This is a move in the right direction. While there is action, it isn’t the entire movie. It is mostly tension building and a look of how someone could slowly start to lose themselves when they think they are the last man on Earth.

TV: Week of Dec 16

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 6:33 pm

Look at what the writer’s strike hath wrought. New stupid reality shows! Let’s hope they die soon so the producers actually give the writer’s a deal that is workable and not so cheap.

New Shows

Duel
Channel: ABC
Time: 8/7c
Premiered: Monday, Dec 17
Trailer

Synopsis: It is a trivia game mixed with roulette involving gambling chips where players place chips on one or more answers. Chips on wrong answers get added to the jackpot. Players can also duel each other and the winner gets all the chips. Each night players are eliminated and final winner is picked at the end of the week on Sunday, December 23rd.

My Take: Glad it is only on for a week, except if it becomes successful, I’m sure they will turn it into another Who Wants to be a Millionaire or Deal or No Deal. While I think it sounds lame, I’m sure the general public will eat it up.

Clash of the Choirs
Channel: NBC
Time: 8/7c
Premiered: Monday, Dec 17
Trailer

Synopsis: Michael Bolton, Patti LaBelle, Nick Lachey, Kelly Rowland and Blake Shelton each have their own choir in different towns that will compete against each other over four nights. Viewers decide the overall winning group.

My Take: Many shows have tried to capture American Idol‘s winning strategy, but not many have succeeded. I believe this will be another failure.

Nationwide Releases

I Am Legend
Directed: Francis Lawrence
Starring: Will Smith
Trailer

Synopsis: One man is the only survivor of a biological attack that has turned other people into zombies.

My Take: Doesn’t look creepy, but like a good action flick. I have also learned that the voice of all the crazy screeching zombies is done by Mike Patton. Now I must see it!

RT Score: 60%
RT Consensus: While I Am Legend starts out with a promising premise, it falls victim to unconvincing special effects and a horror cliché-filled final act.

TAR: Where’s Kovac?

Amazing Race
Cherry on Top of the Sundae That’s Already Melted

There was actually some halfway interesting drama at the airport this leg! It started off with teams finding out that their next destination was Dubrovnik, Croatia where they had to find Fort of St. Lawrence. I love all the different places they are going this season.

TK and Rachel were the first team to head to the airport at 1am. When they arrived, they found out that some ticketing offices wouldn’t open until 4:30am. They looked online and found a Czech flight that left the earliest and then camped out. The goths showed up with them, but decided to search online for more possible flight options. Other teams showed up, didn’t do any research of their own and just joined the line. After finishing with the internet, the goths went to find a travel agent to help them book a flight instead of just waiting for Czech airlines to open. This freaked out all the other teams while they waited in line for it to open. The goths unwillingly psyched all the other teams out by thinking for themselves. Hilarious! Nate & Jen and Ron & Christina went to go see what the goths were doing and lost their places in line. This moved Nick & Don to second place in line behind TK & Rachel who decided to not move after they got in line.

The Golden Compass
Directed: Chris Weitz
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Dakota Blue Richards
Trailer

Synopsis: A girl tries to rescue her kidnapped friend from an evil organization in a world where people’s souls are shown as animals.

My Take: Never read the books, but it looks super cool to me.

RT Score: 44%
RT Consensus: Without the bite or the controversy of the source material, The Golden Compass is reduced to impressive visuals overcompensating for lax storytelling.

TAR: Mega Bitches

Amazing Race
We’ve Really Burned Bridges, for Sure

The thing I dread the most about the show happened–the first 20 minutes of the episode was spent watching teams trying to get flights. Boring! The teams found out that they needed to leave Africa and go to Vilnius, Lithuania. There was much fighting within teams, against teams, and against ticket agents that didn’t speak much English. After all the hassles, everyone got on flights that all arrived around the same time, so it didn’t matter. It isn’t even worth recapping. Jennifer did spend a good amount of time fretting over her and Shana’s decision to U-Turn another team. Shana pretty much told her to shut up about it since she didn’t want to hear it.

No Country for Old Men

Category: 2007,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 11:03 pm

No Country for Old Men

Directed: Joel & Ethan Coen
Starring: Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin

Based on a novel by Cormac McCarthy, one man finds money in a bag around a bunch of dead bodies and when he takes it, he gets in the middle of a mess between an old school sheriff and a bad ass guy that flips coins for human lives.

I love the Coen brothers. Not all their movies are winners, but the good ones are really, really good. I would rank this up there with one of the good ones. What I love about them is the dialogue that they write for simple folks. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when the killer is having a conversation with a local gas station owner. I found it hilarious.

I also enjoyed the killer guy with his weird code of when you kill someone and when to spare them their life with a toss of a coin. He didn’t always do this. Sometimes, they just got a shot to the head with an air gun normally used on cattle. He also had a nifty page boy haircut. Javier Bardem was very impressive with being extremely scary, especially in the beginning scene when the camera just focused on his eyes while he strangled the life out of a man.

Josh Brolin plays the man who comes across the money in a failed drug exchange. Tommy Lee Jones plays the sheriff who is trailing him and the killer. Brolin was fine. Jones was entertaining. I went back and forth about if I wanted Brolin to keep the money since he was a good guy that saw an opportunity and took it, or Jones should get it since he’s the good guy, or the killer should since I guess it was his before Brolin took it.

The ending is very up in the air, but I liked it. There are a few different ways it could have ended and you really aren’t sure what happened. Some people in the audience didn’t like it, but I liked that I ended up thinking about the movie more than if it explained everything.
