Taxidermia

Taxidermia

Directed: Gyorgy Palfi
Starring: Csaba Czene, Gergely Trocsanyi, Marc Bischoff

Three generations of very messed up men who do everything to the extreme.

When walking out of the theater, after watching this movie, all I could think of was “WTF.” This movie is so extremely messed up and I really wish I hadn’t ever seen it. It wasn’t that it was horrible, but that it was highly disturbing and I knew the images would stick in my head for a long time.

The first story involves a sexually perverted man who disturbed me more than the others. I don’t even like to think about what he did, and there was way too much of his penis involved in the story. I was very happy with the way his story ended. The second story is the pervert’s son, who is a guy who is an almost champion speed eater. That story had too much vomiting for my liking. I really hate watching anyone vomiting, more so than blood. The final story is the speed eater’s very skinny taxidermist son who cannot stand his father’s excesses. One part of final story, I could see coming, even though I still couldn’t believe I was watching it when it did. Then it went beyond that and that’s really what made me walk out of the theater thinking that phrase.

La Antena

La Antena

Directed: Esteban Sapir
Starring: Alejandro Urdapilleta, Valeria Bertuccelli

A city had its voice taken away by a big businessman, and one family is trying to get back together, and bring voices back to its city.

It is like a silent movie, very dependent on its music. It is also very childlike. The story is very simple as if it is telling a children’s story, but it is very pretty to watch. You know exactly what is going to happen, but it is still fun to watch. There isn’t much to it though.

Deja Vu

Directed: Tony Scott

Starring: Denzel Washington, Paula Patton, Val Kilmer

A ferry filled with crewmen from the USS Nimitz and their families was blown up in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. BATF Doug Carlin is brought in to assist in the massive investigation, and gets attached to an experimental FBI surveillance unit, one that uses spacefolding technology to directly look back a little over four days into the past.

I caught this movie last weekend via the wonders of digital cable. I didn’t know much about it coming in, other than that Denzel Washington was some kind of cop and he was investigating some kind of disaster.

Spider-Man 3

Directed: Sam Raimi
Starring: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Thomas Hayden Church, Topher Grace, James Franco, James Cromwell, Bryce Dallas Howard

Peter Parker is proposing to Mary Jane while battling three bad guys: Sandman, Green Goblin II and Venom.

When I heard there were three bad guys, I had some worries about too much being crammed in in the movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was handled very well. I never felt like there was too much going on at one point. I also didn’t feel like some characters were given the shaft due to there being so many characters. It was like a well-done ensemble movie.

Lipstick Jungle
Channel: NBC
Time: 10/9c
Premieres: Thu, Feb 7
Starring: Brooke Shields, Lindsay Price, Kim Raver, Andrew McCarthy, Julian Sands, Paul Blackthorne, David Norona, David Alan Basche

Synopsis: The other show that is like Sex and the City, but it is the one that comes from the follow-up book of the same name by Candace Bushell, who is the writer of the book that inspired Sex and the City.

This show tackles similar issues that Cashmere Mafia with one of them having an affair and another one has mother-and-successful career issues, but it does it in a more interesting way. That isn’t to say it is without its flaws. For one, the fashion designer character is completely useless. She is a mess who cries at the drop of a hat and then is wooed by a completely uninteresting millionaire played by Andrew McCarthy, which is quite disappointing. They are both stupid and annoying.

The prequel to the X-Men started filming in New Zealand. It will focus on the origins of Wolverine, hence the title X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is a producer. There isn’t much in the way of plot details, but a few X-Men should be making cameos.

Knight Rider

Knight Rider
Channel: NBC
Starring: Justin Bruening, Deanna Russo, Sydney Poitier, Bruce Davison, Val Kilmer

Synopsis: NBC is trying out if people want to watch the show again by having it come back as a movie that can also serve as a pilot for relaunching the show with the kid of Michael Knight working with the creator of KITT’s daughter to find out who is trying to steal the smart, shape-shifting car.

I wasn’t expecting much from it, so I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t a work of art, but it is fluffy fun. The action at times was exciting, even though other times, I was thinking that they couldn’t forever have conversations in a car. Val Kilmer’s voice was okay and funny at times, but I really wish it was still Will Arnett (Gob from Arrested Development). He would have been hilarious, but he had to back out after some sponsorship deal he has with another car company freaked out that the show is one big Ford Mustang advertisement. That was the only annoying thing in the movie was how much it was an ad for the Mustang. They could have done it with more subtlety. What saved it was how it knew it was campy and went with it. It didn’t take itself too seriously, mostly with KITT poking fun at everyone.

Eli Stone
Channel: ABC
Airs: Thursday @10pm
Starring: Jonny Lee Miller, Victor Garber, Natasha Henstridge, Loretta Devine, Sam Jaeger, James Saito, Matt Letscher, Julie Gonzalo

Synopsis: A lawyer starts to have visions after he is diagnosed with a medical condition. He doesn’t know if his visions are related to his diagnosis or if he has become a prophet.

I wonder why lawyers are the ones that see visions. Ally McBeal had a similar problem except she didn’t think she was a prophet. She also didn’t have a brain aneurysm. Beyond that comparison, the show isn’t filled with “quirky” characters and other annoyances. Jonny Lee Miller is quite charming and believable as both the lawyer who loves all the money in the beginning, but has a change of heart once his life requires adjustment. He starts taking on pro bono and other feel-good cases, and doesn’t want to be the next in line for running the law firm, which is what his fiance’s father (and his boss) had plans for him. He had those same plans, until very recently.

My Take: While the original was beyond cheesy, this one looks like it knows it is campy, and has fun with it, while also have pretty cool special effects.

Stardust
Author: Neil Gaiman

In old English times, young Tristan has fallen in love with the most beautiful girl in the village of Wall. She does promised him a kiss if he retrieves a fallen star, so he goes off searching for it.

A quick read, written like the old fairy tales with flowery language. It reads as if it was written in the time that it takes place. It has the fantasy twist where beyond the Wall is a whole different world that most people in the village are not allowed to travel, but Tristan is able. He goes off having adventures, searching and finding the star, trying to get her back to Wall when she doesn’t want to go with him and is angry that she fell in the first place.
