Be Kind Rewind

Directed: Michel Gondry
Starring: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover

Two video store guys have all their VHS tapes erased, but instead of buying new videos (or possibly upgrading to DVD), they make their own versions of the movies, hoping no one would notice.

What I loved most about this movie were the newer version of movies they created. I found them hilarious and the low-budget way they went about them was highly entertaining. They called these movies “Sweded” which is how they try to describe their technique of taking the basic movie plot and condensing it to about 20 minutes of goofiness resembling the original movie.

New Amsterdam

Category: Shows,TVvelveetahead @ 5:28 pm

New Amsterdam
Channel: FOX
Time: Monday, 9/8c
Starring: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Zuleikha Robinson, Stephen Henderson, Alexi Gilmore

Synopsis: A guy has an immortal curse put on him that will not end until he finds his one true love. He bides his time as a homicide detective.

This show reminds me of Highlander except it isn’t as exciting. I enjoy the glimpses into his background and the various lives he led before. Trying to introduce himself to who he thinks might be his one true love is interesting. When he’s at his current job as a homicide detective, it is boring. The stories are simple and wrapped up easily so that half of the episode can be devoted to those back stories. I wish his job wasn’t given so much presence or he had another job where it can weave in and out of the stories, but not be half the episode. When he is on cases, it usually reminds him of something in his past, but other things can remind him since the cases haven’t been overly exciting.

I would not call this appointment television, but something to have on while you are doing something else.

Unhitched

Unhitched
Channel: FOX
Day/Time: Sunday, 9:30/8:30c
Starring: Craig Bierko, Rashida Jones, Johnny Sneed, Shaun Majumder

Synopsis: Four recently single friends enter the dating scene again in their thirties.

After two episodes, I haven’t laughed once. Everything is juvenile and I don’t see how any of these people are friends. Rashida Jones should be on a better show. I’m giving up on it!

Nationwide Releases

Drillbit Taylor
Directed: Steven Brill
Starring: Owen Wilson, Leslie Mann, Danny McBride, Josh Peck, Troy Gentile
Trailer

Synopsis: Three kids getting bullied at school hire a bodyguard to help them out.

My Take: Cashing in on the Judd Apatow name with something that doesn’t look as funny as Knocked Up or Superbad, but I did giggle a bit at some of the trailer.

RT Score: 24%
RT Consensus: Owen Wilson’s charms can’t save Drillbit Taylor, an unfunny, overly familiar bullied-teen comedy.

Lions, Penguins & Bears…Oh My!

Top Chef: Chicago
Zoo Food

I haven’t been a super big fan of the team challenges in the past, but I am enjoying them this time around. I like that they show them working together, but they still have a chance to make a dish on their own so they can showcase or fail on their own.

Quickfire Challenge

The challenge is to create an entree using fresh ingredients from the Green City Farmer’s Market, but they can only use five ingredients total for their dish. Salt, pepper, sugar and oil will not count as one of the five ingredients. Any other item, even items found in the Top Chef pantry will count as one of the five ingredients. They had 30 minutes and $25 to shop.

The Riches
Channel: FX
Time: 10/9c
Premieres: Tue, Mar 18
Starring: Eddie Izzard, Minnie Driver, Noel Fisher, Shannon Woodward, Aidan Mitchel, Todd Stashwick, Margo Martindale, Gregg Henry, Jared Harris
Trailer

Synopsis: The family witnessed an accident that left another family dead. They took their identities and rich way of life by moving into their new house in a gated community. Everything came to a head last season and the family is hitting the road, but the family got too used to their rich life and aren’t sure they want a life on the road again.

My Take: The show was a slow going last season at the beginning and a bit out there at times, but it did get better. Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver really sold the show. I loved how they pulled off what they did and then how it all came crumbling down at the end. They have quite a mess to get themselves out of this season.

Top Chef: Dueling Chefs

Top Chef: Chicago
Anything You Can Cook I Can Cook Better

I’ve always wanted to go to Chicago since I have heard there is awesome food there. I still haven’t been, but I’m excited that the new season of this show is set up there.

Everyone meets up at Uno’s for some pizza and beer, which sounds really good to me, but I basically drool over whatever weird stuff they come up with or food in general, so expect more drooling from me. I am noticing that two people have the stupid faux-hawk haircut. I thought it was dumb when Dale had it last season, and thought it was dumb the first time I saw it a few years ago. I really hoped this hair trend would have died by now, but I guess I’ll have to suffer with it longer. Then two of the women (Jennifer and Zoi) say they know each other in San Francisco and they are a couple. I am thinking, “Why would they want to compete against each other? It is going to destroy their relationship.” I guess we’ll see what happens with that, but I see nothing but drama!

Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who
Directed: Jimmy Hayward, Steve Martino
Starring: Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Carol Burnett
Trailer

Synopsis: An elephant discovers there is an entire world of tiny things living on a speck of dust floating through the air.

My Take: Animation looks awesome and seems cute without being overly cloying.

RT Score: 82%
RT Consensus: Stays true to the spirit of Dr. Seuss’ classic story. Horton Hears A Who! is both whimsical and heartwarming, and is the rare Dr. Seuss adaptation that stays true to the spirit of the source material.

Stove Top Meatloaf Muffins

Category: Food,RecipesAmy @ 5:21 pm

1 box Stove Top stuffing
1 lb extra lean ground beef (use ~96% lean or else it’ll be greasy)
2 egg whites (or 1 egg)
1 cup water

Mix everything together and divide into a 12 muffin muffin tin. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes.

My research is indicating that these would be 2 points each on the weight watchers.  I also saw varieties adding chopped onion and green pepper for a more traditional meatloaf vibe.

I am going to make them right now and report back on their deliciousness (hopefully)

For the record, I was lame and got 90% lean beef so hopefully they won’t be too greasy. Also I’m using Savory flavor stuffing.

Lost: Other Flashback

Category: Lost,Recaps,TVvelveetahead @ 7:29 pm

Lost
The Other Woman

I giggled when Juliet referred to herself as an Other. I know the survivors called them that, but not used to them referring to themselves as an Other.

At the beginning, I thought it was a flashback, until I remembered that each episode this season has been a flash forward instead so she must have gotten off the island. Then it was a flashback! Very tricky. I laughed at Andrea Roth being her therapist on the island since she’s the bitchy ex-wife of Tommy in Rescue Me. Too bad she turned out to be bitchy here too. I guess she’s good at playing that role.
