Waitress

Waitress
Directed: Adrienne Shelly
Starring: Keri Russell, Jeremy Sisto, Nathan Fillion

A waitress with a knack for making unusual, but yummy pies, dreams of getting away from her selfish husband, and starts fantasizing about her doctor when she finds out she is pregnant.

Do not watch this movie if you are hungry or if you have a tendency to crave pies. I wanted to eat each pie that she made in the movie or ones that she described. Each one sounded awesome and they had crazy names, but I didn’t care what they were called. I just wanted to eat them.

Beyond the pies, Keri Russell was impressive. I’m used to seeing her as sweet, naive Felicity, but she is cynical and has such low self esteem from her verbally abusive husband. You can see how she talks herself into staying with him, even though there is no reason to stay, even after she finds out she is pregnant. There is no sign of why she fell in love with him in the first place, other than it is a small town and there are not a lot of options.

When she starts to see the new doctor in town, she has tons of chemistry with Nathan Fillion, even though he is a happily married man. The affair they begin is completely wrong since they are both married. It seems okay for her since her marriage is dumb, but there isn’t any indication that his married life is horrible. They have such good chemistry, you keep hoping they get together or run off together. When the wife is finally introduced, she is super nice, so it is just a bad situation, but it is eventually handled well, if somewhat abruptly. It does fit in with her cynical character though.

It is a very sweet, but cynical movie with a nice happy ending that is partially expected, but not completely.

Grade: B+
