Thumbsucker

Directed: Mike Mills
Starring: Lou Taylor Pucci, Tilda Swington, Vincent D’Onofrio, Kelli Garner, Keanu Reeves

A teenager still sucks his thumb. His parents want him to stop, but he doesn’t care. Keanu Reeves is his hippie dentist that tries to hypnotize him to stop sucking his thumb. The kid is on the debate team because he likes a girl on the team. He stutters a lot and is self conscious. The school thinks he should be on Ritalin. He agrees and then everything turns around. He becomes super successful at school and wins everything at debate. His father starts to pay attention to him, and I started to wonder if the movie was a big pro-Ritalin movie.

Movies Opening May 16

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 10:59 am

Nationwide Releases

Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Directed: Andrew Adamson
Starring: Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Georgie Henley
Trailer

Synopsis: The four kids from the first movie return to Narnia one year later for them, but it has been 1,300 years since they last left Narnia. Prince Caspian is trying to wage war against his uncle the King, who really shouldn’t be the king, and bring Narnia back to how it is supposed to be.

My Take: I will eventually want to see it, but most likely will wait for DVD.

RT Score: 69%
RT Consensus: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is an entertaining family adventure worthy of the standard set by its predecessor.

Waitress

Category: 2007,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 12:56 am

Waitress
Directed: Adrienne Shelly
Starring: Keri Russell, Jeremy Sisto, Nathan Fillion

A waitress with a knack for making unusual, but yummy pies, dreams of getting away from her selfish husband, and starts fantasizing about her doctor when she finds out she is pregnant.

Do not watch this movie if you are hungry or if you have a tendency to crave pies. I wanted to eat each pie that she made in the movie or ones that she described. Each one sounded awesome and they had crazy names, but I didn’t care what they were called. I just wanted to eat them.

FOX Fall Schedule

Category: News,TVvelveetahead @ 10:07 am

FOX is another network not adding many new shows next season or holding off until midseason for them. FOX also has the added hardship of baseball messing up its fall lineup every year. They usually debut fall shows in late August while other networks wait until late September. They do this to get a jump on the competition and reel people into their shows before they lose them for a bit during the fall when baseball preempts everything.

Baby Mama

Category: 2008,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 12:42 am

Baby Mama
Directed: Michael McCullers
Starring: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Greg Kinnear, Signourney Weaver, Dax Shepard
Trailer

A woman wants a baby, but adoption and conception are not an option for her, so she turns to a surrogate mother who is a tad immature.

I found this movie mildy amusing. It wasn’t really laugh out loud funny, or the laugh out loud funny parts were already shown in the trailers. It was entertaining, but not has off the wall or hilarious as 30 Rock. The comedy was broader. The only parts that I did laugh out loud were when Amy Poehler’s character kept getting stuck in Tina Fey’s character car. My favorite line in the movie was, “Your stupid space car won’t let me out.”

Parts that weren’t really shown in the trailer was the entire relationship between Tina Fey and Greg Kinnear. They were very sweet together and I enjoyed watching them. There was also a bit of a twist in the storyline that I didn’t see coming. I expected it to be a bit more straight forward, but it was a tiny bit more complex. The very ending though was predictable, but I’m glad it turned out that way since it fit the movie.

Steve Martin was unexpected and just odd. I could have done without him.

CBS Fall Schedule

Category: News,TVvelveetahead @ 11:30 am

Already mentioned how CBS canceled Moonlight, but here is the full scoop on its shows for next season. They also canceled Shark, but I’m not overly sad about that one. I watched it, but it was starting to bore me. I won’t miss it.

Sharp Objects

Category: Booksvelveetahead @ 12:48 am

Sharp Objects
Author: Gillian Flynn

A newspaper reporter at a small Chicago newspaper is sent on assignment to her old hometown in Wind Gap, Mo. to find out why young girls keep showing up dead.

This was a really quick read. I found it very enthralling, especially the parts where the main character described why she cut herself when she was younger. I never understood cutting, so reading a character trying to describe why they do it and what they are thinking when they do it, helps to understand why young girls do it. That isn’t the main part of the story, but just a subplot that really helps the reader get inside the main character’s head while she is trying to work on the murder story for her paper in a town she did not want to return. She ran away to get away from her mother, but she was back staying with her mother and her young half-sister that her mother adores, while also dealing with the haunting reminders of her dead younger sister that her mother obviously loved more than her.

CBS: Good & Bad News

Category: News,TVvelveetahead @ 8:13 pm

CBS finally announced that it canceled Moonlight. It didn’t like that it lost 13% of its audience from Ghost Whisperer, so it is gone. Even the crazy fan base that set up a blood drive to save the show didn’t work.

In better news, they did renew The New Adventures of Old Christine and How I Met Your Mother. More info on other shows after their official upfront tomorrow.

CW Fall Shows

Category: News,TVvelveetahead @ 8:06 pm

CW has turned into a network that I really don’t want to watch. They did renew three shows that I watch, Reaper, Smallville, Supernatural, but the rest of it and the new shows don’t sound very promising.

NBC Fall Schedule

Category: News,TVvelveetahead @ 10:03 am

NBC actually announced its upcoming schedule six weeks ago since they decided to be weird and avoid the upfronts where all the media shows up, even though I think they were at the upfronts yesterday so I guess they had two presentations? I don’t know.

Anyway, here are the officially canceled shows: 1 vs 100, Amnesia, Bionic Woman, Clash of the Choirs, Journeyman, Las Vegas, My Dad is Better Than Your Dad, Phenomenon, Quarterlife,  and The Singing Bee.
