MWG: Strange Brew
I’ve gone back and forth on what my next movie will be, but I will go with one of my all-time favorite movies. It has a dumb plot, but I found it hilarious when I first saw it in fourth grade. Every time my brother and I would go to the video store, we would rent it. This was back in the days that no one owned movies since they all cost around $100, but I’m pretty sure we spent that after all the times we rented it. You don’t even have to like beer to enjoy it since I wasn’t not a beer fan in fourth grade. 😉 It also shows that Rick Moranis was once cool. Please don’t hate it because it is Canadian!
Netflix synopsis: Hoping to snag some free beer by helping a brewery owner reclaim her business, goofy Canadian brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie (SCTV’s Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) wind up battling criminal Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow), who plans to take over the world by releasing his hypnotic brew to the beer-guzzling population. Now, the fate of humankind lies in the hands of Canada’s biggest “hosers” in this classic comedy.
Rotten Tomato Score: 70%
The plot is beyond stupid, but I can overlook that since I love the McKenszie brothers. I never saw the SCTV’s sketches. My introduction to them was from this movie. It won a place in my and my brother’s heart. We knew it was stupid and the music was super cheesy, but we could not stop watching it. We even loved it when the dog, Hosehead, took off flying and had a cape. It just fit the movie.
If I watched it for the first time, I’m not sure if I would find it as awesome, but I can still watch it and find it super hilarious, especially with the awesome lines that fill the movie:
– “Fleshy-headed mutant, are you friendly?” “No way, eh, radiation has made me an enemy of civilization.”
– “If I didn’t have puke breath, I’d kiss you.”
– “We are from the department of justice. We are here to adjust the beds.”
– “Sorry about your nervous breakdown. I had one when he was born.”
– “Steamroller!”
– “It wasn’t me….it was the chair.”
– “This movie was shot in 3B – three beers – and it looks good, eh?”
– “I wouldn’t go in there. There’s a big skunk in there.”
I finally sat down and watched this movie. I won’t lie, there were moments when my attention drifted 🙂 There are alot of great lines. As I watched I thought, “that’s a good one” but failed at writing any of them down. I loved the bed one and the mutant one. I also glanced up to the screen to wonder, “Why are there storm troopers on skates?” Part of me just liked it when they said “eh” and I don’t think I realized that Rick Moranis was kinda cute when he was younger. I know I’ve seen this before, but didn’t remember any of it. I think it would be a good movie to watch with a group of people, (and at least 3 beers) 😛
I concur about watching it with a group of people and beers. If you watch it with me though, I’ll just say most of the lines out loud, which can be obnoxious.
I also watched this movie many times while growing up – and it didn’t stop me from living in Canada eh?
hehehe anyways, this movie is super silly, yet so enjoyable. Too bad rl Canada is not as amusing as this fine film!
