MWG: Strange Brew

Category: 1980s,Movie Watching Group,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 6:39 pm

I’ve gone back and forth on what my next movie will be, but I will go with one of my all-time favorite movies. It has a dumb plot, but I found it hilarious when I first saw it in fourth grade. Every time my brother and I would go to the video store, we would rent it. This was back in the days that no one owned movies since they all cost around $100, but I’m pretty sure we spent that after all the times we rented it. You don’t even have to like beer to enjoy it since I wasn’t not a beer fan in fourth grade. ;) It also shows that Rick Moranis was once cool. Please don’t hate it because it is Canadian!

Strange Brew

Netflix synopsis: Hoping to snag some free beer by helping a brewery owner reclaim her business, goofy Canadian brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie (SCTV’s Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) wind up battling criminal Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow), who plans to take over the world by releasing his hypnotic brew to the beer-guzzling population. Now, the fate of humankind lies in the hands of Canada’s biggest “hosers” in this classic comedy.

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 6:59 pm

Nationwide Releases

Pineapple Express
Directed: David Gordon Green
Starring: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Amber Heard, Danny McBride, Gary Cole
Trailer

Synopsis: A stoner unintentionally witnesses a murder and gets his stoner friend to help him with not getting killed.

My Take: Along the same lines as Superbad and Knocked Up, so it should be good times.

RT Score: 69%
RT Consensus: Both funny and scatter shot, this loose-knit action/buddy/stoner comedy bridges genres and keeps a steady tempo of low ball laughs.

TV: Week of Aug 3

Willing to Try

Primeval
Channel: BBCA
Time: 10/9c
Premieres: Sat, Aug 9
Starring: Douglas Henshall, James Murray, Hannah Spearritt, Andrew-Lee Potts, Lucy Brown, Juliet Aubrey, Ben Miller
Trailer

Synopsis: A team of scientists try to deal with prehistoric predators that are terrorizing the modern world through a rip in the fabric of time.

My Take: It looks cheesy and I would be wary if it was on Sci-Fi, like one of their Saturday night movies, but I have higher hopes since it is BBC America. It has also received good reviews from TV Guide critic, Matt Roush, saying it is fun and doesn’t take itself seriously.

Switches

Category: Bands,Music,Random Songsvelveetahead @ 3:55 pm

Switches are a British band. I heard their Drama Queen song on 94.7 and it was pretty catchy. The rest of the album is very ’70s-inspired dance rock. It is just good rock music with a bit of a beat to it. My favorite song of the group below is Step Kids in Love. Listen to them and let me know if you have a favorite.

Nationwide Releases

Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Directed: Rob Cohen
Starring: Brenden Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Michelle Yeoh
Trailer

Synopsis: Brendan Fraser is attacking Jet Li as a dragon emperor while lots of dead things attack everyone.

My Take: The first two were campy, goofy fun. This one loses it and tries too hard. I was also confused in the trailer why they were shooting arrows at skeletons. Do arrows hurt bones?

RT Score: 9%
RT Consensus: With middling CG effects and a distinct lack of fun, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor finds the series past its prime.
