MWG: Day Watch
We have been slacking! We skipped movies for a couple of months. Jer had picked this movie out, but I kept forgetting to post it so I’m finally getting it up here and we’ll just make it the November movie pick. This movie comes from a book series (Night Watch, Day Watch and Twilight Watch). I read the first book and Jer has actually read all three. We watched the first movie, but it didn’t really follow the book and it isn’t necessary to read them to follow the story. I decided I didn’t need to read the second book to watch this movie and I don’t think you need to read or watch the first movie to figure out what is going on with this one. At least I hope not, since we haven’t seen it yet. The trailer looks super awesome in terms of special effects and action. The director went on to make the Angelina Jolie movie Wanted.
Netflix synopsis: Anton (Konstantin Khabensky) finds himself in the middle of a mythic conflict between the forces of Light and Dark in this sequel to Night Watch, the surprise 2004 hit from Russia. To protect his son, who has come under the control of the dark side, Anton must seek an ancient artifact. But the powerful relic threatens to upset the uneasy peace between the two sides and puts Moscow at risk for a devastating cataclysm in this supernatural thriller.
Rotten Tomato Score: 63% (Certified Fresh Pick)
There is a brief recap of the first movie at the beginning of this one that helps with those that haven’t seen the first. It talks about how there is a truce between the good and evil in the world so things don’t tip out of balance too much, which would be bad for everyone. The Day Watch are the evil ones that make sure the good ones don’t do too much good and the Night Watch are the good ones making sure the evil ones don’t too much evil. The other main thing that happens in the previous one is that Anton, the main guy, went to a fortune teller to put a curse on his ex-girlfriend, but saw the Others (the supernatural ones) and they figured he must be one since he could see them. That’s pretty much the set up for this one.
I thought the first movie was okay and found this one to be slightly better, but it is still goofy and all over the place. The special effects are very good, but they do seem to overshadow the actual story. Some parts of the story are interesting and entertaining while other parts just seem odd and out of nowhere. Both movies are both good starters to see the director making Russian movies before he moved onto his U.S. debut, Wanted.
Grade: B-
Watched this on the netflix instant which was very handy! I really liked it! The crazy action scenes and all the little details like the rose on the shifter in the yellow truck! I also liked Sveta’s cookie monster coat and how the magic powers were all so cool! This movie made me very hungry for pot stickers! I loved Alicia and her crazy ass driving and outfits!
Ok, so I am a “little” behind, but I watched this a day or so ago. Super weird but I really liked it. I had a bit of a hard time at first because I had been watching Oz while also tracking a spider on my very tall ceiling waiting for it to come within killing range. Oz ended, I wasn’t tired and spider was still on the ceiling. I put this in having no idea I was in for subtitles! I had to put my spider bloodlust on pause ’cause I kept losing track of what was going on by missing subtitles while looking at the ceiling. I actually think that the part about the chalk that was shot in the past was my favorite. Also perhaps because of my bloodlust I felt that someone needed to squish that creepy babydoll spider thing. Seriously. It was disturbing. I wished that I had watched the first just for more history. I have it in my queue now. Good effects, good flick
