Movies Opening November 14

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 11:49 am

It is pretty much James Bond and nothing else this week.

Nationwide Releases

Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace
Directed: Marc Forster
Starring: Daniel Craig, Mathieu Amairic, Olga Kurylenko, Judi Dench
Trailer

Synopsis: It picks up roughly where Casino Royale ended where James Bond has Mr. White in custody, trying to find out about the organization that blackmailed the only woman he ever loved. He’s also a tad pissed.

My Take: I loved the last movie. I hope this one has great action sequences like it did. I am concerned about how much clothing he has on in the trailer. There should be less of it.

RT Score: 67%
RT Consensus: Brutal and breathless, Quantum Of Solace delivers tender emotions along with frenetic action. Not as good as franchise reboot Casino Royale, but still an impressive entry to the Bond canon.

TAR: Dye Time!

Category: Amazing Race,Recaps,TVvelveetahead @ 12:46 am

Amazing Race
My Nose Is on Fire

This leg of the race included a Speed Bump for Team S&M because they were last in a non-elimination leg. In the past, the game has had nothing happen to teams that came in last in a non-elimination leg. Then they lost their bags and all their money. They only had what was on their backs after that. That was annoying since they had to beg and plead with people to give them money. It wasn’t much fun to watch.  Then, they had the teams marked for death where they had a time penalty when they checked into the pit stop. Time penalties are not very exciting to watch either. I like the extra task that they have to do because it depends more on their skills and reading clues like the rest of the race. It’s the same with the U-Turns where teams are sent back to do the other detour instead of just standing around not doing anything for a period of time when there were Yields before U-Turns.

TV: Week of November 9

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 3:50 pm

I’m not much into reality, but I do love Amazing Race and Top Chef. When one is playing, the other one is taking a break. This time, Top Chef is starting when Amazing Race is still going. The recaps are going to wear me out!

Pick of the Week

Top Chef: New York
Channel: Bravo
Time: 10/9c
Premieres: Wednesday, November 12
Starring: Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi, Gail Simmons
Trailer

Synopsis: The fifth season takes place in New York where 17 chefs compete to win a spread in Food & Wine magazine, a showcase at the Food & Wine classic in Aspen, $100,000, and the title of Top Chef.

My Take: I have learned so much about food while watching this show. It also makes me hungry after watching each one since I want to try everything, no matter how weird it might look.

TAR: Fire Head Lady

Category: Amazing Race,Recaps,TVvelveetahead @ 10:54 pm

Amazing Race
Please Hold Me While I Singe My Skull

At this point, I have some definite favorite teams. I’m really rooting for Toni & Dallas to win. I actually like Nick & Starr, even though the divorced ladies can’t stand them. I find the divorced ladies pretty stuck up though. I have tried to like them, but they are just annoying. As much as I don’t like Team S&M or Team Emo, they make for good television so I hope they stick around for a bit to give me something to write about. I’m surprised the frat guys are in the race. They seem to make very dumb mistakes and have been second to last almost every leg. It really does seem to be Andrew and dead weight. Does Dan do anything besides whine? Has Andrew done every road block? Did they get rid of the requirement where each team member  had to do an equal number of road blocks?

MWG: Day Watch

Category: 2007,Movie Watching Group,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 2:43 am

We have been slacking! We skipped movies for a couple of months. Jer had picked this movie out, but I kept forgetting to post it so I’m finally getting it up here and we’ll just make it the November movie pick. This movie comes from a book series (Night Watch, Day Watch and Twilight Watch). I read the first book and Jer has actually read all three. We watched the first movie, but it didn’t really follow the book and it isn’t necessary to read them to follow the story. I decided I didn’t need to read the second book to watch this movie and I don’t think you need to read or watch the first movie to figure out what is going on with this one. At least I hope not, since we haven’t seen it yet. The trailer looks super awesome in terms of special effects and action. The director went on to make the Angelina Jolie movie Wanted.

Day Watch

Netflix synopsis: Anton (Konstantin Khabensky) finds himself in the middle of a mythic conflict between the forces of Light and Dark in this sequel to Night Watch, the surprise 2004 hit from Russia. To protect his son, who has come under the control of the dark side, Anton must seek an ancient artifact. But the powerful relic threatens to upset the uneasy peace between the two sides and puts Moscow at risk for a devastating cataclysm in this supernatural thriller.

Rotten Tomato Score: 63% (Certified Fresh Pick)

Choke

Category: 2008,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 1:25 am

Choke
Directed: Clark Gregg
Starring: Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston, Kelly MacDonald, Brian William Henke
Trailer

Synopsis: Based on a Chuck Palahniuk novel, a sex-addict who works at a Colonial theme park fakes choking in restaurants so people can save him.

I love the book. It is twisted and very wrong. It is also shocking the first time you read it. I reread the book just before the movie came out and it wasn’t as shocking, but was still twisted and funny. While the movie seems to follow the book very closely, it doesn’t seem to capture the spirit of it. It is the same feeling I had after watching the first two Harry Potter movies. They stuck to the story very well, but they just weren’t as much fun as the books. Yes, I did just compare this movie to Harry Potter. The Harry Potter movies later on (starting with the third) captured the spirit and were as much fun as reading the books, but they were also worth seeing without having to say the books were better. They were both different experiences of the same story. Here, there isn’t much experience with just the movie. Everything I love about it can be found in the book. I am curious if anyone that hadn’t read the book would find it funnier than I did. I laughed out loud while reading the book, but only chuckled a couple times during the movie. It could have been that I knew what was coming, but I’m not so sure.

TAR: Fishy Fish Fish

Category: Amazing Race,Recaps,TVvelveetahead @ 11:35 am

Amazing Race
Do It Like a Madman

Last week I wondered how the blondes got so far behind, which ultimately led to their elimination. I found some video footage that didn’t make the show of them being stuck at a gas station forever not able to get their automatic vehicle started. When they finally asked for some help, the gas station attendant showed them that they weren’t in park. They had been sitting there forever with the car manual out trying to figure out why the car was broken. Oh boy.
