TAR: Got Wood?

Amazing Race
Your Target Is Your Partner’s Face

I’m sad I haven’t come up with any good team names yet. I’m still trying to decide if there is a team I hate yet. I’m not a big fan of the flight attendants, but I think I like the rest of them. Right now Margie & Luke and Mel & Mike are my two favorite teams. As people get more exhausted in future legs, then we will see how some handle the stress.

Order teams left the pit stop:

  1. Margie & Luke – 2:56 am
  2. Tammy & Victor – 2:57 am
  3. Mark & Michael – 2:59 am
  4. Mel & Mike – 3:18 am
  5. Amanda & Kris – 3:47 am
  6. Brad & Victoria – 3:56 am
  7. Cara & Jaime – 3:59 am
  8. Kisha & Jen – 4:02 am
  9. Steve & Linda – 4:04 am
  10. Christie & Jodi – 4:12 am

Clue: Fly to Munich, Germany. Once they landed, teams drove themselves to the city of Ruhpolding to ride a cable car to the top of a mountain to find their next clue.

Airport Fun Times

Most teams made reservations by using the cab driver’s cell phone on the way to the airport. Margie & Luke and the stuntmen brothers seemed to be the only ones that did not make reservations on the way to the airport, but were looking to get on the 7:10 am flight that everyone else wanted to get on. It appeared to be the earliest one. Margie & Luke got the last pair of tickets since when the stuntmen brothers tried to get the same tickets, but there weren’t any more seats left. At that time, the flight attendants were trying to make reservations in the cab and were told the same thing. Everyone got on the 7:10 am flight except for the stuntmen brothers and flight attendants that left on the later 8:45 am flight.

Munich, Germany

The sibling lawyers were the first out of the airport and into one of the marked cars headed to Ruhpolding. They were fairly confident they were going in the right direction. Amanda & Kris were the second ones out of the airport. Margie & Luke were in third place with the NFL cheerleaders following them in fourth place. Mel & Mike were in fifth place. The sisters were in sixth place. Kisha said they were sure they were going the right way when they were on a highway, but once they moved to regular streets, they weren’t so sure. The sibling lawyers did actually find Ruhpolding and the cable cars. No teams were immediately behind them when they got on one. It was leaving in two minutes after they arrived. They got on and took off right before Amanda & Kris arrived. They had to wait 15 minutes for the next one. At the top of the mountain, there was a road block as the next clue.

Ruhpolding

Roadblock: It asked teams who was ready to fly like an eagle. After one of them answered, that team member would paraglide down the mountain in tandem with one of the instructors while their partner would take the cable car back down to the designated landing area. Then they could open up the next clue. If there were unsafe wind conditions, teams could choose to wait for the wind conditions to improve or choose a 60 minute hike down the mountain.

The sisters were shown lost somewhere while Margie & Luke and the NFL cheerleaders were pulling into the parking lot. Mike & Mel arrived just behind them. They caught up to Amanda & Kris and they took the cable car up together. Tammy was all strapped in and ready to go when the winds changed. The instructor didn’t know how long it would last, but they couldn’t go at that time. She said she was going to walk down. At that point, all the other teams came pouring out of the cable cars. She actually started going down the hill. Mel decided he would be the one to go since he had to do some of the fun challenges. After he was strapped in, he said he would wait for the wind to change since he couldn’t walk down the hill with his groin.

Around this time, the last two teams landed in Munich and were headed to Ruhpolding.  Brad & Victoria  arrived to the top of the mountain and Victoria was very excited to do the challenge. Steve & Linda were headed up in the cable car. She was a bit freaked out about the height, but she did like the scenery. After waiting a bit for the wind, Victoria got tired of waiting and decided to walk down the mountain. Linda got up there and declared she would be doing the road block. Margie decided she was going to walk. When Kris saw her go, he decided to join her. Cara was staying strong with waiting for the wind to change along with Mel and Linda. I almost hoped the wind would calm down so someone could paraglide down.  Linda finally gave up and started running down the hill.

The running down the hill people were shown coming up to arrows when there was a fork in the road and then heading the direction of the arrow. The sisters and flight attendants finally showed up to the top of the hill. Cara finally gave up and started running down the hill. Mel couldn’t run down the hill so he was still waiting.  The stuntmen brothers showed up. Everyone went down the hill and just left Mike & Mel up there waiting for the wind to change. After waiting and waiting, the wind finally changed to Mel got ready to jump. Around that time, Tammy got down the hill and opened up the next clue with Victor.

Clue: Teams had to drive 25 miles to Schonau Am Konigssee to find their next clue.

Mel and the instructor jumped off the hill around the time that Margie finished running down the mountain. Margie & Luke took off. Kris showed up next so Amanda & Kris were off next. Margie & Luke were finding where to go on the map while Kris was asking a local for directions.  That put Amanda & Kris just ahead of Margie & Luke. Victoria came down next so Brad & Victoria were off in fourth place. Mike was going down in the cable car and could see his dad gliding down at the same time. Linda was running down the hill and came to a division in the road, but didn’t know which way to go. She decided right even though there was an arrow pointing to the left. Other people running down found the arrows and ran the right way. Mel landed so Mike & Mel were off in fifth place.

Schonau Am Konigssee

While the rest of the teams were running down the mountain, the sibling lawyers arrived in Schonau Am Konigssee to get the next clue, which was a detour.

Detour: In Balancing Dolly, teams had to ride a segueway through a two-mile obstacle course. When they finished, they would receive their next clue. In Austrian Folly, teams had to throw Austrian pies at a target. What the clue did not tell them that the target would be their partner’s face. They had to take turns smacking each other in the face until they find a pie with a cherry filling.

The sibling lawyers picked the  pie throwing challenge. They finished before any other teams arrived and got their next clue.

Clue: Teams had to make their way on foot to woodcutters where they would get a small piece of cut wood, which would then be stamped with their next clue.

The siblings ran over to the little woodcutter contraption and put money in to get the little thing to cut the wood and got their clue.

Clue: Team had to drive to Salzburg, Austria and find Schloss Hellbrunn, which was the pit stop.

Back at the roadblock, Mark and Cara were coming down the mountain. Mark & Michael were the sixth team to head out with the NFL cheerleaders being the seventh team to go. Linda was shown walking somewhere, completely unknown but getting close to highway traffic. Jen came running down so the sisters headed off in eighth place. Linda figured out she was lost and tried to figure out which way to go. Christie came running down the mountain and the flight attendants were off in ninth place. Linda was shown crying in frustration while she was on the wrong side of the mountain. I felt bad for her. She went up to a stranger and asked if she knew how to get to the cable car place. The lady offered to give her a ride around the mountain to that place.

Salzburg, Austria

The sibling lawyers were the first to arrive at the pit stop. As the winners, they both won hybrid go-carts? Did I hear that right?

Back in the race, Amanda & Kris arrived at the detour. They picked the pies! When one of the pies hit Amanda in the face, she said, “Oh that was lemon.” While they were walking to the woodcutters, Kris said the pie in his face was delicious.  Linda finally made it back around and met up with Steve. Amanda & Kris left the woodcutter and headed to the pit stop. Mike & Mel arrived at the detour in third place. They picked the segueways. Margie & Luke were right behind them and Margie wanted to do the pies even though Luke thought it would take too long. Mike & Mel finished the  obstacle course and kept their third place as they headed to the woodcutters. Luke wanted to switch from the pies but Margie didn’t want to do it. Mike & Mel got their woodcutter piece and headed off for the pit stop. Brad & Victoria arrived at the detour.  They went for the pie throwing. The sisters were lost again and had to turn around, but they were still ahead of the flight attendants. Margie & Luke finally finished the pies as Brad & Victoria came into the tent.  Margie & Luke got the wood and headed to the pit stop in fourth place. Brad & Victoria finished up the pies, got the wood, and headed to the pit stop in fifth place.

The NFL cheerleaders arried at the detour and picked the segueways. The sisters and stuntmen arrived at the detour. They both picked the segueway. On the course, the sisters passed the flight attendant who parked somewhere farther away. The sisters pointed out where the clue box was and the flight attendants decided to pick the pies. Steve & Linda were still driving.  Amanda & Kris were lost so they got directions. They were very close to the pit stop. Mike & Mel arrived to Schloss Hellbrunn, but couldn’t figure out how to get in the courtyard where Phil was located. Phil stood there with his eyebrow raised while Mike tried to see if he could climb the gate. Mike found someone to open the gate and came in second place. Amanda & Kris arrived in third place.

Back at the detour, the NFL cheerleaders finished the obstacle course around the time that Margie & Luke arrived in fourth place. Brad & Victoria arrived next in fifth place right before the stuntmen finished the course. The sisters finished right around when the stuntmen were headed to the pit stop.  The flight attendants were still throwing pies at each other. The show made note that fourteen hours had passed since the race started that leg. The NFL cheerleaders arrived at the pit stop in sixth place. Steve & Linda arrived at the detour while the flight attendants finally found the cherry pie. Steve & Linda picked the pies and passed the flight attendants coming out of the pie tent.

While Steve & Linda threw pies, the flight attendants were being confused with their clue. They asked someone what one word meant and the local told them it meant to cut wood. I’m not sure what was so confusing for them since everyone found the place pretty quickly and got their wood piece. I don’t know if it was because it was dark outside or if they just couldn’t read, but the flight attendants were grabbing some pieces of wood from what looked like a barn and trying to find something to cut it with. Steve & Linda finally found the cherry pie and headed off to the woodcutters while the flight attendants wandered around with their found pieces of wood. They saw the finish line for the obstacle course, but didn’t realize it was for that. They thought they were supposed to bring their wood through the finish line so they went wandering around some more. WAT! Steve & Linda saw the flight attendants ahead of them but I really hoped they wouldn’t follow them or else they would become just as lost.

The remaining teams were driving to the pit stop. The stuntmen were sure they were lost. The sisters were lost again! Back with the flight attendants, they asked someone where to go from what their clue said and they finally found the woodcutter. They got the piece of wood with the pit stop clue. Steve & Linda found the woodcutter no problem so they were headed to the pit stop too. The sisters got directions at a gas station. The flight attendants got directions and found out they were headed the wrong way. Steve & Linda were following highway signs that said Salzburg. The sisters finally arrived at the pit stop in seventh place. Some time after, the stuntmen arrived in eighth place. The last two teams found the pit stop, but who found it first? It was the flight attendants found it first so they were in ninth place. That made Steve & Linda in tenth place and they were eliminated from the race.

The order the teams arrived at the pit stop:

  1. Tammy & Victor
  2. Mike & Mel
  3. Amanda & Kris
  4. Margie & Luke
  5. Brad & Victoria
  6. Cara & Jaime
  7. Kisha & Jen
  8. Mark & Michael
  9. Christie & Jodi
  10. Steve & Linda – eliminated

Questions

  1. Do you think Steve & Linda would have received a penalty forLinda getting a ride around the mountain if they hadn’t come in last place?
  2. Did the gate really just push open when that local tried it and Mike couldn’t get it to open or did the local do something and then push it open?
