TV: Week of March 15

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 12:33 pm

Two problems Scrubs had when it was on NBC was lack of promotion and always moving to a new time slot. Since it moved to ABC, it has had much better promotion, but it’s moving time slots already! It is moving from Tuesday to Wednesdays so it can be the lead in for ABC’s new show Better Off Ted.

Season Finales: Tool Academy, Kyle XY, The City,Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Pick of the Week

kings

Kings
Channel: NBC
Time: 8/7c
Starring: Ian McShane, Chris Egan, Sebastian Stan, Susanna Thompson, Allison Miller
Premieres: Sunday, March 15
Trailer

Synopsis: In a parallel universe where monarchs still rule in a New York-type city, a soldier saves a powerful man’s son and is brought into the fold of the family.

My Take: I have read mixed reviews about the show. Mostly, I have read it is slow going in the first hour, but does improve. It still has some work to do but I’m willing to try it out.

Movies Opening March 13

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 11:21 pm

Is every movie a remake these days? Race to Witch Mountain isn’t so much a remake as taking a nugget of an idea and going in another direction with it. I loved Escape From Witch Mountain when I was a kid, but no idea if it was any good or if I liked it because I was little and I liked everything. I don’t remember much about it. The Last House on the Left is also a remake, but I don’t know the original. It doesn’t look like a horror movie so much, but closer to one of those torture revenge films that are not my thing. Miss March is the teen sex comedy that only had one funny part in the trailer to me about the fire engines that couldn’t turn around quickly. That one scene isn’t funny enough to make me want to see it. In the limited releases, Sunshine Cleaning is the only movie certified fresh this week. It might be the only winner!

Nationwide Releases

Race to Witch Mountain
Last House on the Left

Race to Witch Mountain
Directed: Andy Fickman
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, Carla Gugino, Ciaran Hinds, Alexander Ludwig
Trailer

Synopsis: Alien kids crash landed on Earth and their spacecraft is hidden inside Witch Mountain. They get the Rock to help them get it out.

My Take: While the kids do not appear to be annoying, but kind of cool, the story of kids escaping from bad people story looks predictable.

RT Score: 38%
RT Consensus: Despite the best efforts of a talented cast, Race to Witch Mountain is a tepid reboot that lacks the magic of the original.

MWG: PCU

It is now Jim’s turn to pick our fabulous movie this month to watch and review. He has selected his fine, feature film of college campus shenanigans.

PCU

This satirical comedy — Hart Bochner‘s directorial debut, starring Jeremy Piven, Chris Young and Jon Favreau — follows the hijinks of a band of renegade college students out to unveil the idiocy behind blind political correctness at Port Chester University. The students live at the Pit, a dormitory for those who want a reprieve from the rabid PC environment. When their detractors decide to take them down, they fight to the hilarious end.

watchmen

Watchmen
Directed: Zack Snyder
Starring: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley

I have read the comic. I loved the alternate take on 1985 where Richard Nixon had been elected to his third term as U.S. President and the Cold War with Russia was growing stronger every day. The book also dealt with the concept that people would take to the streets as superheroes, even though they were more along the lines of Batman than Superman. They didn’t have any special powers. They just wanted to see justice done. It started in the ’50s with the Minutemen, but then died out. It came back decades later with a different group of people known as the Watchmen. Not everyone was a fan of their brand of justice. They saw them as vigilantes. There was an act passed by Congress outlawing masked crusaders so the Watchmen went into hiding until one of their own was murdered. Was someone killing the Watchmen or was it just someone that hated that one person? Good question!

TAR: It All Comes Tumbling Down

Amazing Race
It Was Like a Caravan of Idiots

I am impressed with the challenges this season. I would think that after so many seasons, they would start to seem repetitive, but they aren’t! They seem tougher this season and they don’t really remind me too much of what I have seen from past seasons. I also like that the tasks are a mix of brawn and brain so you can’t just have one type of person that will be so heavily slanted towards winning the competition.

Order teams left the pit stop:

  1. Mel & Mike – 10:49 pm
  2. Amanda & Kris – 10:53pm
  3. Kisha & Jen – 10:55 pm
  4. Margie & Luke – 11:06 pm
  5. Mark & Michael – 11:07 pm
  6. Christie & Jodi – 11:08 pm
  7. Jaime & Cara -  11:29 pm
  8. Tammy & Victor – 1:30 am

Clue: Teams had to fly through Moscow to Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. Once they landed, they had to make their way to the structure on the back of a 10 ruble note, which was a hydroelectric dam, to find their next clue.

TV: Week of March 8

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:36 pm

This week on Wednesday night, American Idol and Lie to Me swap times slots. Other than that, I’m excited Breaking Bad is back and I’m going to check out Castle. Other than that, I’m ignoring other new shows premiering.

Season Finales: The L Word, Secret Diary of  a Call Girl, Kath & Kim

Pick of the Week

breakingbad3

Breaking Bad
Channel: AMC
Time: 10/9c
Starring: Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn, Aaron Paul, RJ Mitte, Dean Norris, Betsy Brandt
Premieres: Sunday, March 8
Trailer

Synopsis: Last season Walt found out he had inoperable cancer, but didn’t want to leave his family with nothing so he decided get enough money saved by using his chemistry teacher skills in order to make and sell crystal meth. He did have to use the help of a former student drop out since he had no drug connections.

My Take: This was my favorite show of last season. The show goes to very dark places, but it is also awesomely funny at the same time. Walt and Jesse get themselves into situations that I cannot see how they would get out, but they manage to do it in a completely believable and awesome way.

Movies Opening March 6

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 7:08 pm

No one wanted to compete with Watchmen this weekend so it is the only major release. None of the limited releases are very buzz worthy, even though a few of them look good.

Nationwide Releases

9x9_fresh Watchmen

watchmen

Watchmen
Directed: Zack Snyder
Starring: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley
Trailer

Synopsis: Set in an alternate 1985 where Nixon is still president and masked superheroes are seen as vigilantes, someone has killed one of them, but no one knows why.

My Take: The comic book is awesome and I’m curious to see how it has been translated to screen since it has been said to be “unfilmable.”

9x9_fresh RT Score: 65%
RT Consensus: Gritty and visually striking, Watchmen is a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel, but its complex narrative structure may make it difficult for it to appeal to viewers not already familiar with the source material.

TAR: Can’t Do a Cartwheel?

Category: Amazing Race,Recaps,TVvelveetahead @ 11:20 pm

Amazing Race
I’m Not Wearing That Girl’s Leotard!

In previous seasons, I usually dreaded the beginning of the series since there were so many teams and things moved too fast, but I have to say that this season is awesome. The challenges are great, the scenery is breathtaking and I am laughing at what they put the teams through to get to the next clue.

Order teams left the pit stop:

  1. Tammy & Victor – 10:13 am
  2. Mel & Mike – 12:01 pm
  3. Amanda & Kris – 12:12 pm
  4. Margie & Luke – 12:30 pm
  5. Brad & Victoria – 12:53 pm
  6. Jaime & Cara -  1:17 pm
  7. Kisha & Jen – 1:51 pm
  8. Mark & Michael – 2:00 pm
  9. Christie & Jodi – 2:42pm

Clue: Teams had to travel by train to Munich and then fly over 700 miles to Bucharest, Romania. Once they landed, they traveled by taxi to a gymnastics hall to find their next clue.

TV: Week of March 1

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 10:29 pm

After a few weeks of nothing new coming out, midseason replacements are beginning. It is also sweeps month on television. It is usually in February, but it was pushed back due to the digital switchover, even though that was pushed back to June or July. In other tv show news, Trust Me moves to Tuesdays nights since The Closer has finished it season to help lead into the show. It is on its own for the rest of its season. Top Chef is over, but the reunion show will be on this Wednesday night.

Season Finales: Girls Next Door, The Bachelor, Dirty Jobs, Nip/Tuck, Knight Rider, Ghost Hunters International, Burn Notice

Pick of the Week

reaper

Reaper
Channel: CW
Time: 8/7c
Starring: Bret Harrison, Tyler Labine, Ray Wise, Missy Peregrym, Rick Gonzalez
Premieres: Tuesday, March 3
Trailer

Synopsis: After Sam fears that he might actually be Satan’s spawn, he goes off on a road trip with the guys. When they return, they find out they have all been fired from their jobs at the Work Bench and evicted from their apartment.

My Take: It is a goofy little show, but I love it. I think the chemistry of the cast works and Ray Wise is an awesomely evil and creepy Satan.
