Movies Opening April 17

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 9:59 pm

The Crank movie was not previewed for critics, which usually means that it will be horrible, but in this case, the critics that had to see it with everyone else on Friday night and loved it! It weren’t saying it was the best movie of the year, but it lived up to its low set expectations of crazy nonsense.

Starring: Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Clifton Collins, Efren Ramirez
Trailer

Synopsis: A guy has his heart replaced by an artificial one that needs constant electrical shocks in order to keep him alive until he can find his stolen heart again.

My Take: Completely ridiculous and probably a complete blast to watch.

9x9_fresh RT Score: 68%
RT Consensus: Crank: High Voltage delivers on its promises: a fast-paced, exciting thrill ride that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

MWG: My Name Is Bruce

Category: 2008,Movie Watching Group,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 11:17 am

April is Stacy’s month to pick a movie for us to all watch and review. She is a fan of Bruce Campbell, so she selected his latest movie for our viewing pleasure.

My Name Is Bruce

Mistaken for the character he plays in the Evil Dead films, B-movie icon Bruce Campbell (playing himself) is kidnapped by the citizens of a small mining town who want him to save them from a vengeful demon. At first, Campbell thinks it’s all part of an elaborate prank. But when he realizes the demon is in fact real, he comes face to face with a second terrifying enemy — his own fear. Ted Raimi co-stars in this tongue-in-cheek comedy.

Rotten Tomato Score: 39%

New releases this week: Silversun Pickups, Metric,  Grand Duchy

Recommended

Artist: Silversun Pickups
Album: Swoon
RIYL: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, U2, Doves, Neko Case, Metric

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Silversun Pickups for their first album. I thought “Lazy Eye was okay, but never bought the album. I do like their new song “Panic Switch” a lot more.

Amazing Race
Rooting Around in People’s Mouths Could Be Unpleasant

Why do people leave things in taxis? Did they learn nothing from last season when a passport was left and lost in a taxi? Yes, the big backpacks are annoying, but take them and all your important stuff with you!

Order teams left the pit stop:

  1. Tammy & Victor – 9:27 pm
  2. Jamie & Cara – 12:31 am
  3. Mark & Michael – 12:46 am
  4. Margie & Luke – 12:53 am
  5. Kisha & Jen – 1:05 am

Clue: Teams flew to Bangkok, Thailand. Once there, they had to go to the outskirts of town to a boat yard and search the grounds for their next clue.

I didn’t realize that the lawyer siblings were so far ahead of the cheerleaders! The cheerleaders tried to make up time immediately by freaking out on the locals before even finding a taxi outside the pit stop. They asked a guy if he was a taxi. He said he was, but they didn’t believe him. Why did they ask him in the first place? They went over to ask a cop, but didn’t appreciate the gas station guy trying to answer too. Jamie started shoving her hand in the gas station guy’s face telling him to shut up so the cop could talk. Then they ended up with the original bewildered cab driver. I think if I was the driver, I’d just not take their money and wait for someone else. Later on, at the airport, everyone got on the same 7:25 am flight to Bangkok so there was no airport drama.

Movies Opening April 10

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 8:09 pm

It is a shame that another mall cop movie already came out this year and it starred Kevin James. It is such a shame indeed. It is not as much of a shame that there is more Miley Cyrus up on the big screen or that Dragonball Z is now a movie. I just don’t understand the kids these days. I guess I’m officially old. :(

Observe and Report
Directed: Jody Hill
Starring: Seth Rogan, Anna Faris, Michael Pena, Ray Liotta
Trailer

Synopsis: A mall cop takes his job very seriously, especially when it threatens the life of the makeup counter girl he has a crush on.

My Take: The trailers didn’t seem overly funny, but since it is Seth Rogen, I know I would most likely enjoy it.

RT Score: 51%
RT Consensus: Though it has a mean streak, and does not cater to all tastes, Observe and Report has gut-busting laughs and a fully committed Seth Rogen in irresistible form.

There Will Be Blood

Category: 2007,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 10:43 pm

therewillbeblood

When the movie first came out, I wanted to see it because I love Paul Thomas Anderson. The cinematography looked amazing. It was pretty while also being bleak. Then, it became known for the line, “I drink your milkshake!” which Daniel Day-Lewis’ character Daniel Plainview says to Paul Dano’s preacher character, Paul Sunday. I had no idea what the line meant, but it sounded ridiculous. I had second thoughts about seeing it since I wasn’t sure if I could take it seriously after seeing tons of parodies about that line.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

I enjoyed the first movie more than I expected. I found the penguins and the lemur king (played by Sacha Baron Cohen) hilarious. They were still the best part of the sequel. This one picks up right where the last one left off. They had put together their plane they crash landed on the island in the first one. It was put together as a giant slingshot so you know it would end well. Shockingly, they don’t go far when they crash land into Africa. Conveniently, it is right where Alex the lion was kidnapped as a baby by poachers but eventually sailed all the way across the ocean to end up in New York.

TV Premieres: Week of April 5

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 8:08 pm

The writer’s strike killed Rescue Me last spring, so they held off and are now offering us a full 22-episodes instead of the usual 13 that cable shows air. Can we handle that much firefighter goodness?

Season Finales: United States of Tara, Trust Me, Life, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Friday Night Lights

Pick of the Week

rescueme

Rescue Me
Channel: FX
Time: 10/9c
Starring: Denis Leary, Adam Ferrara, Michael Lombardi, Steve Pasquale, Andrea Roth, John Scurti, Daniel Sunjata, Larenz Tate, Callie Thorne
Premieres: Tuesday, April 7
Trailer

Synopsis: Tommy doesn’t know what to make of the new guy that Janet is dating (Michael J. Fox) while the guys try to figure out how to spend the money that Mike’s mom left him.

My Take: The show got pretty dark and grim around season three, but improved greatly last season when it found the right balance of gritty realism mixed with completely messed up hilarity.

Movies Opening April 3

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 4:15 pm

Adventureland is the coming of age movie that will appeal to those that actually remember 1987 or want to see a teen comedy that has a bit more substance. It is actually Certified Fresh unlike the other nationwide release this week. I feel that Fast & Furious exists because the four main stars did not become any more successful since the first movie. After finding their careers stalled, they are hoping this will lead them to better things. Let’s hope not.

Adventureland
Directed: Greg Mottola

Trailer

Synopsis: After graduating college in 1987, a guy’s dream of visiting Europe falls short when he doesn’t have enough money so he gets a summer job working at an amusement park.

My Take: I did enjoy Superbad, and while it doesn’t look as laugh out loud funny, it does look like it has the right combination of sweet and twisted to make it a teen comedy with brains.

9x9_fresh RT Score: 88%
RT Consensus: Full of humor and nostalgia, Adventureland is a sweet, insightful coming-of-age comedy that will resonate with teens and adults alike.
