Music Releases: June 9

Category: 2009,Music,Releasesvelveetahead @ 10:23 pm

New releases this week: Placebo, Sonic Youth, Kasabian, The Dirty Projectors

Recommended

Artist: Placebo
Album: Battle For the Sun
RIYL: Marilyn Manson, Depeche Mode, Kings of Leon, Phoenix, Silversun Pickups

Reviews say it is inconsistent, but the first and last tracks are very strong. The songs sounds bigger and more epic than previous albums, which could be because they used a new producer who worked with Tool and Muse before.

TV: Week of June 8

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 8:15 pm

There are about a million shows debuting tonight and then a couple more trickling in the rest of the week. Kings returns on Saturday nights to burn off the rest of its episodes. Pushing Daisies airs its final episode on Saturday night too.

Pick of the Week

Weeds
Channel: SHO
Time: 10/9c
Starring: Mary-Louise Parker, Elizabeth Perkins, Kevin Nealon, Justin Kirk, Hunter Parrish, Alexander Gould, Allie Grant
Premieres: Monday, June 8
Trailer

Synopsis: After moving close to the Mexico border, Nancy got in bed literally with a Mexican gangster. She ended last season pregnant with his child and Celia was kidnapped by her own daughter.

My Take: It is twisted and hilarious. I also love Mary-Louise Parker.

Movies Opening June 5

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 8:40 pm

I am thrilled that the reviews for The Hangover are good since I thought it looked hilarious the first time I saw the trailer. I thought Land of the Lost looked pretty cute, so it is too bad the reviews are not as good for it.  In the limited releases, John Krasinski  stars as a soon-to-be father, Mariah Carey stars in something better than Glitter, and Nia Vardalos makes another annoying romantic comedy.

The Hangover
Directed: Todd Phillips
Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Heather Graham, Justin Bartha
Trailer

Synopsis: Guys go to Vegas for a bachelor party. The groomsmen wake up the next day with a baby, a tiger, a missing tooth and no idea what happened the night before including where they misplaced the groom.

My Take: It looks so hilarious!

9x9_fresh RT Score: 76%
RT Consensus: With a clever script and hilarious interplay among the cast, The Hangover nails just the right tone of raunchy humor, and the non-stop laughs overshadow any flaw.

The Incredible Hulk

Category: 2008,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 12:07 pm

incrediblehulk

This movie was so much better than the turd of a movie that came out a few years ago where a cartoony Hulk bounced through the movie.  I thought the movie did a better job getting right into the action by skipping past how be became the Hulk during the credits. It did explain what happened during the experiments as the movie went along in a much more natural way. The storytelling was superior and so was the acting, even Liv Tyler who I am not a big fan of hers. I really enjoyed Edward Norton and Tim Roth. They made the movie better. They could have easily overacted, but they didn’t.
