Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince

I give the director credit for making the movie as exciting as it was to watch based on the book it came from. This book filled in a lot of backstory about Voldemort, but did spend most of the time with Harry watching various memories from Dumbledore and other people’s past that had to do with Voldemort. That doesn’t really make for an exciting screen translation. It was interesting to read though. That was half the book while the other half was filled with the kids growing up and acting on their feelings towards each other or just others in general. I love that part of the book since young love can be hilarious, heartbreaking and stupid all at the same time. I thought that part of the movie was done really well, but did take up a good portion of the first half of the movie.

I really felt like there were multiple storylines fighting with one another in the film that didn’t always mesh together well. The young love was very light-hearted and didn’t always transition well into the seriousness of Death Eater’s growing threat. I did find a few parts where one girl was cursed to be pretty freaky and probably frightening to younger children. I also thought Dumbledore and Harry searching for the horcrux was done really well too. The things in the water were creepy.

I’m not sure who doesn’t know the ending of the story, but I felt the fight between Dumbledore and the others seemed rushed. I believe it needed more build up. Maybe since I knew what would happen, I didn’t find it as shocking or sad as it was in the book. In the book, like in the movie, it did end soon after the fight. It was pretty much a cliffhanger until the final book and now it’ll be a cliffhanger until the final two movies. I have no idea how they will split the final book into two films.

Overall, I thought this film was decent, but not one of the better ones in the series. It is far better than the first two films, which were so incredibly boring, but I thought the third through fifth in the series were spectacular. I believe this one would be my least favorite if I ignored the first two films were ever made.
