TV: Week of June 27

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 6:44 pm

Tonight, the Daytime Emmy Awards are on and I’m wondering how much longer they can hold these awards with the broadcast networks canceling soap operas left and right. In Plain Sight ends its third season on Wednesday. On Thursday, the not-hyped 100 Questions ends its first season. I did not hear any buzz about that show so I’m pretty sure no one watched it. Then on Saturday, the last episode of Three Rivers will shown. ABC has also started to burn off the remaining episodes of The Forgotten on that night too.

Pick of the Week

Rescue Me
Channel: FX
Time:
10/9c
Starring:
Denis Leary, Michael Lombardi, Steven Pasquale, Andrea Roth, John Scurti, Daniel Sunjata, Callie Thorne, Adam Ferrara, Larenz Tate
Premieres: Tuesday, June 29
Trailer

Synopsis: After being sober most of last season, Tommy started drinking again and convinced most of his family to start back up again too, which led to Tommy getting shot at the end of last season by his uncle.

My Take: It is an awesome mix of screwed-up drama and laugh out loud comedy.

Top Chef: Healthy & Nutritious Lunch

Category: Recaps,TV,Top Chefvelveetahead @ 9:19 pm

Top Chef: Washington D.C.
Outside the Lunch Box

Here is a quick run down on the two challenges:

  • Quickfire Challenge: Chefs must pair up to create a sandwich.
  • Elimination Challenge: Create a healthy school lunch with a budget of $2.60 per child

I liked the challenges, especially the healthy lunch one. I liked that they showed they could make good, interesting food within the horribly low budget.

Top Chef: Melting Pot

Top Chef: Washington D.C.
House of Chef-presentatives

Here is a quick run down on the two challenges:

  • Quickfire Challenge: Mise en place tournament
  • Elimination Challenge: Create a dish that reflects where you’re from

In these early episodes, they have too many chefs to show the judges talking about each one in the challenges. This time, we at least got to see the final dishes in the elimination challenge, but didn’t hear what the judges thought about them when they tasted them. Personally, I’d rather see them edit out some of the grocery shopping to show that stuff. The grocery stopping looks the same in each episode. It is like when Amazing Race used to spend so much time showing the teams at the airports when it was boring! Learn from them, Top Chef.

MWG: Legend

Category: 1980s,Movie Watching Group,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 11:06 am

Stacy wanted to continue on the theme we have had going on this year with what she calls, “The Tim Curry classic Legend.”

Netflix synopsis: Jack (Tom Cruise) lives peacefully in a mythical forest with animals and goblins until fate leads him to battle a host of terrors to rescue a captive unicorn. If he loses, the world plunges into an eternal ice age. Meanwhile, he must save the beautiful princess Lili (Mia Sara) from the clutches of the demonic Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry). Director Ridley Scott’s cut of this epic fantasy adventure includes 20 more minutes of footage.

Tonight has two great shows on. True Blood premieres its third season with tons of blood, sex, vampires and werewolves get thrown into the mix. Breaking Bad wraps up its third season and it is still my current favorite show on television. After it ends, there will be a sneak preview of AMC’s next new show Rubicon.

9/8c

Anna Panquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Rutina Wesley, Kristin Bauer, Nelsan Ellis, Deborah Ann Woll, Chris Bauer, Todd Lowe, Carrie Preston, William Sanderson

TV: Week of June 6

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 6:46 pm

MTV has Aziz  Ansari is hosting the MTV Movie Awards tonight. I have found it to be pretty funny in the past so it is one of the few awards shows that I try to catch.  FOX is busy burning off shows that it has canceled with new episodes of ‘Til Death and Sons of Tucson on tonight. On Monday, The Good Guys moves into its regular time slot after Lie to Me, which has returned from hiatus.  Showtime wraps up its two comedies (Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara) on Monday too. On Tuesday, Glee and Justified wrap up their first seasons. Finally, on Wednesday Top Chef Masters wraps up its second season, just in time for the original Top Chef to come back on June 16th in Washington D.C.

Pick of the Week

Last Comic Standing
Channel: NBC
Time:
8/7c
Starring:
Craig Robinson, Greg Giraldo, Natasha Leggero, Andy Kindler
Premieres: Monday, June 7
Trailer

Synopsis: After two years, the stand-up comedy competition returns with a new host and actual comedians as the talent scouts.

My Take: I’m a sucker for stand-up comedy so I get sucked in each time, even when it’s bad.

Movies Opening June 4

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 2:13 pm

You have your choices between a raunchy comedy, gross-out horror flick, romantic comedy and scary talking animals this week. Does this summer not seem to be filled with as many BIG movies releases like years past?

Nationwide Releases

Get Him to the Greek
Splice
Killers
Marmaduke

Get Him to the Greek
Directed: Nicholas Stoller
Starring: Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Elisabeth Moss, Rose Byrne, Colm Meaney, Sean Combs
Trailer

Synopsis: A spin-off from Forgetting Sarah Marshall where an assistant needs to get rock star from London to New York City in time for an anniversary concert.

My Take: Russell Brand isn’t as clever as he thinks he is, but I still find Jonah Hill very funny.

RT Score: 75%
RT Consensus: Thanks to a suitably raunchy script and a pair of winning performances from Jonah Hill and Russell Brand, Get Him to the Greek is one of the year’s funniest comedies.
