Shutter Island

The movie had so many things going for it. It had a good cast with Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as detectives investigating a patient escaping from a mental institution for the criminally insane that is run by Ben Kingsley. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and came from a book by Dennis Lehane who also wrote Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone. It looked super creepy with something not quite right at the asylum that is on an island like Alcatraz that seemed to always have spooky weather.

While I was ready for a spooky and creepy movie, it wasn’t. After I realized that, I was ready for something to mess with my mind. It sets up that something it not quite right at the mental institution. Did a missing patient actually disappear from her room that was locked from the inside? Is there crazy stuff going on that no one wants to talk about in a lighthouse? Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Teddy, also starts to wonder if he is being drugged while he is trying to investigate a missing patient that no one seems to be too concerned is missing.

The movie looked great. The dim colors on the island, along with the rainy, windy weather set a nice atmosphere. The dreams Teddy kept having were pretty awesome. They gave little clues that you could remember when the ending finally gives the big reveal away. I just wish that was enough.

I thought the movie had a decent enough set-up as a mind-twisting film, yet I started to get bored. It started to repeat itself a bit too much so by the time we figured out what was going on, I didn’t care anymore. Even if I did care, the ending was way too long. What was really going on was explained to Teddy. Then we were shown the same things we were just told. Almost 45 min. of the movie was spent explaining what was going on. The movie would have much better if it had some editing. It could have been a tight, twisted thriller but it ended up as a bloated mess.
