Amazing Race: Sleep with the Fishes

Amazing Race
A Kiss Saves the Day

Sadly, there was no watermelon to the face this leg. Also, no one did anything extremely stupid. That makes me sad. I will hope for more stupidness in the next leg since that makes me happy.

Leaving the Pit Stop

The order the teams left the pit stop.

  • Jill & Thomas – 11:55 am
  • Nat & Kat – 12:00 pm
  • Connor & Jonathan – 12:20 pm
  • Brook & Claire – 12:21 pm
  • Katie & Rachel – 12:22 pm
  • Gary & Mallory – 12:40 pm
  • Michael & Kevin – 12:41 pm
  • Chad & Stephanie – 12:50 pm
  • Andie & Jenna – 1:35 pm
  • Nick & Vicki – 1:45 pm

Clue: Fly to Accra, Ghana in West Africa. Once they landed, they had to make their way to Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, which is built as a tribute to the father of Ghanian independence.

When Glee left, they decided to wait for the home shopping queens and volleyball girls since they were all a minute apart. They didn’t know how to get to the airport so Brook jumped up on a tractor and asked the guy driving for directions. She gave him a “big sloppy kiss” as a thank you. When father/daughter team left, Mallory was very excited to be going to Africa because she wanted to hold an African baby. Um, okay.

At the airport, the teams found out there was only one flight per day so they were all on the same flight to Accra.

Accra, Ghana

The teams experienced beggars on the street. They were sticking their arms into the taxi cabs and trying to grab any cash they could see. The Glee guys rolled up their window as soon as the cab was able to move from a stopped position and started singing, “Please drive faster!” Mallory had tears in her eyes while telling one guy that she had no money and he was telling her he was hungry. Andie gave one guy some change. He thanked her and moved on quickly. Jenna said it might give them good karma.

A bunch of teams got to the park at the same time, but the home shopping queens got to the clue box first.

Clue: Teams had to make their way to Makola Market.

Tattoo team, Chad & Stephanie and volleyball girls were right behind the home shopping queens. Father/son and Jill & Thomas were the next group to get to the park. The last batch that arrived at the park were the doctors, Glee, father/daughter and mother/daughter. Mallory was not thrilled when she saw they were in second to last place.

Sunglasses Selling

When the teams came up to the market, they saw how huge and crowded it was. Jill did not like all the people or the smell. When Michael saw it, he said it reminded him of the markets in Taiwan when he was a kid. The tattoo couple were the first to find the clue box, which was a road block.

Road Block: It asked “Who thinks they can handle some shady dealings?” One team member had to sell as many sunglasses to earn about 15 cedi (or about $10) and not sell any one pair for less than 3 cedi. After making their money, they must give it to the lead vendor who will give them their next clue.

Nick decided to do the road block. The home shopping queens arrived next. Brook volunteered. Jill & Thomas and Chad & Stephanie got the clues next. Jill and Chad decided to do it. The volleyball girls were next and Rachel decided to do it. The father/son team were the next team to arrive and Michael decided to do it. Kat decided to do it when the doctors arrived.

Claire said it was a natural task for them since they sell for a living. Brook was the first one to sell a pair of glasses. Chad was focusing on selling to women so he could flirt with them. I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure that one guy told Jill, he didn’t have any money, but when Michael approached him, he bought some. The Glee guys showed up and Connor decided to do it. The father/daughter team were stuck in a cab that died and the driver couldn’t get it started again. While they were stalled, the birth mother & daughter arrived. Andie told Jenna she should do it. Back at the stalled taxi, they finally decided to give up on the non-moving one and grab another one. I’m not sure why they waited so long. They were in last place.

Nick was not having any luck. He said he had no technique, but he didn’t think there was one. They either bought them or they didn’t. Over in Brook’s area, she was selling like crazy telling guys that they looked like supermodels and kissing them on the cheek if they bought the glasses. She had earned 9 cedi. Jill and Kat finally gave up trying to sell one pair at a time and grabbed a few to take out in the crowd of people. Chad was almost selling a pair of glasses, but the girl only gave him two cedi. He was begging for the last one. Michael was doing well, selling to other vendors. He had sold 9 cedi.

A lot of other teams were having problems selling even one pair. The father/daughter team arrived and Mallory decided to do it. She was calling the sunglasses “shaded pleasure.” Okay! Brook sold 15 cedi and was done with the task. The home shopping queens got their next clue.

Clue: Go to the June 4th area and find the Peace Motor Spare Parts.

As the queens headed out, Connor was doing well and had 13 cedi. Michael sold his last pair so the father/son were the next team to get the clue. Kevin was completely surprised his dad finished. Connor quickly made another sale and the Glee kids were on their way. He didn’t sing once while trying to sell things. Amazing! Chad finally convinced the girl to give him one more cedi so he had made 15 cedi so Chad & Stephanie got the next clue. Jenna looked around at all the teams that were finishing before her, like the volleyball girls.

Crazy Coffins

The home shopping queens arrived at the next clue box. It was a detour.

Detour: Tune In or Check Out. In Tune In, the teams had to go to an electrical supply store to pick up a television antenna system. They had to find a marked house and install the antenna to the specifications of the owner. When the television is properly tuned in, the owner will give them their next clue. In Check Out, teams made their way to the woodworking shop, where coffins are created to represent the lifestyle of their eventual occupants. Teams had to take a coffin and transport it through town to a shop to get their next clue.

The home shopping queens decided on the antenna task and headed to the electrical shop. They found a house right after they picked up their kit, which included pink safety glasses. Brook was up a ladder hammering the antenna to the roof while Claire was working on  the cable coming down from it and talking about the food that someone was making was making her hungry. Brook told her to focus. After she was done, they went inside and Brook climbed onto of the fridge to help snake the cable through parts of the ceiling and over to the television.

The father/son team were dropped off, but the cab dropped them off in front of the electrical shop and not the spare parts shop. The Glee kids thought they lost a lot of time with the a lost cab driver, but he did get directions so they were headed back on track. Chad & Stephanie actually arrived at the clue box second. Stephanie said they should do the Tune In since Chad was good with electronics. The father/son were looking around for a clue box when they ran into Chad & Stephanie who told them the clue box was across the street.

Before they got there, the volleyball girls arrived and decided to do Check Out. They ran over to the wood shop and checked out the weird coffins like a piano and various animals. They went with the piano. They loaded it on a cart and tied it down so they could roll it through town. The father/son finally found the clue and picked Tune In. Around that time, Chad & Stephanie were at their house working on setting up the antenna. They got done hammering the antenna to the roof while the father/son were working on a house where they connected the cable to the television first and then went to hammer in the antenna next.

Slow Selling

Back at the road block, Jenna sold her last two pair of sunglasses to the same person. Jill was shocked that she was done. Nick wasn’t having any luck either. One guy came up with Mallory and asked how much for the entire board of sunglasses she was carrying. While she counted up 200 pairs, he tried one pair on and decided to buy that pair. He did help her finish the task so she moved on. Jill was helping a guy with his glasses, but found a pair with a scratch so she put them back and found another pair. Thomas told her she was wasting time, but she was being nice so shut up Thomas. That was her last pair so they got to move on. It was between the tattoo people and the doctors.

One lady came up to Nick and tried a pair on. She danced with them on and then danced away. He told her she had to buy them, but she just walked away. Good selling! While Kat was trying to convince  a lady to buy some sunglasses for four cedi when she only wanted to pay one, Nick finally tracked down the stealing lady and convinced her to buy the sunglasses. That left the doctors in last place at the road block. The lady finally relented to Kat and bought some so she was done with the task. Now all teams were headed to or working on the detour.

Poor Reception

At the detour, the home shopping queens were done with their wiring and turned on the television. It was really grainy and they asked if they were done. The owner told them that they had to go tune it to make the picture clear. Brook went back up on the roof. She wasn’t sure how to turn it and was yelling, “I don’t know what I’m doing.” Chad was nearby up on his own roof and turned around when he heard her yelling. The volleyball girls were running down the street. They didn’t want to run too fast and lose the coffin off the cart. They saw the coffin shop and had to run across traffic with their coffin to make it over there.

Brook was getting nervous since she could see Chad across the way working on his antenna. She finally turned the right thing since Claire yelled that it was clear. The owner agreed and Brook came down for her clue. It was a clue to the pit stop.

Clue: Teams had to make their way to Kaneshi Market, one of the largest markets in all of West Africa. They had to make their way through the huge crowd to find Phil at a bridge.

The home shopping queens thought they were in first and very excited. The volleyball girls delivered their coffin and were in second place. The Glee kids arrived and decided to do the antenna task. Chad & Stephanie plugged everything in and turned the television on. It was complete static. He asked if that was okay. How is that okay? You can’t see anything! Michael and Kevin had better luck with their television and were the third team with the pit stop clue. Chad messed with the cable a bit and finally got a better connection so they got the clue.

The mother/daughter and father/daughter team were on their way to the detour still when Jill & Thomas showed up. They decided to do the coffin task. They picked the coffin that looked like a camera. The tattoo people arrived and picked the antenna. The doctors were in a cab with a lost driver. They got some directions.

Pit Stop

As they got closer to the market, Brook was praying they were first. They were running around the market looking for Phil when the volleyball girls arrived at the market. They were both running and looking, but the home shopping queens arrived to the mat first. They came in first place and won a 10-day trip to Hawaii. Soon after, the volleyball team came in second place.

Back at the detour, Glee club couldn’t get the antenna to work correctly. They probably needed to mess with the cables connected to the television instead of the antenna, but they were only messing with what was on the roof. They gave up and switched to the coffin task. Father/son team showed up at Phil’s mat in third place. Meanwhile, Jill & Thomas had arrived at the coffin shop and were carrying up their huge camera coffin up some stairs to turn it in. They did have some locals helping them. They were off to the pit stop when Chad & Stephanie checked in with Phil in fourth place.

The doctors’ taxi driver didn’t know where he was going so he was asking for directions. Father/daughter and mother/daughter were still lost. The Glee kids got to the coffin shop and chose a huge fish coffin. Jonathan said that he thought it was oddly shaped for a human but I guess if they wanted to sleep with the fishes, they could. Father/daughter finally arrived at the detour and picked the antenna task. The doctors got there and picked the coffin. The tattoo team finished up the antenna task and were headed to Phil. Over with Phil, Jill & Thomas happened to get out of the cab right where Phil was standing so they checked in with him for fifth place.

Father/daughter were starting to work on the antenna task while the doctors were loading up a huge lobster onto their cart. The Glee kids were running into cars with their fish. The mother/daughter finally got to the detour while the Glee kids were arriving at the coffin shop. The doctors were having some problems controlling their lobster when it ran over the curb and Kat. They were carrying their lobster up the stairs at the coffin shop when the father/daughter team finished up the antenna task. The mother/daughter did the coffin task and delivered a big fish.

The tattoo team, Glee kids, father/daughter, doctors, and mother/daughter were all stuck in traffic. The doctors convinced their driver to pass a bunch of cars. They passed everyone! That was one crazy driver. The Glee guys were ready to race the doctors to the mat. Both the doctors and Glee got to the market at the same time. The Glee guys found Phil first with the doctors right behind them. They were teams number six and seven.

The tattoo couple found Phil for eighth place. It was a race for last place between father/daughter and mother/daughter. The father/daughter team found him first so they were in ninth place. That left mother/daughter to come in last place. They were eliminated.

Order the teams arrived at the pit stop:

  1. Brook & Claire – Home Shopping Queens
  2. Katie & Rachel – Volleyball Girls
  3. Michael & Kevin – Father/Son
  4. Chad & Stephanie – Dating
  5. Jill & Thomas – Dating
  6. Connor & Jonathan – Glee
  7. Nat & Kat – Doctors
  8. Nick & Vicki – Tattoo
  9. Gary & Mallory – Father/daughter
  10. Andie & Jenna – Mother/daughter

Questions

  1. Did anyone else find the birth mother/daughter team odd? Since they didn’t really know each other, they didn’t seem as comfortable working together or yelling at each other like other teams.
  2. What did you think about Brook kissing everyone throughout the race?
  3. What did you think about the crazy coffins?
