Amazing Race: Cakes & Boxes on Bikes

cakestroke

In this episode, teams traveled to Denmark where they carried cakes on bikes, built a living room in a parking space and had to memorize crazy sandwich orders. There were also a lot of people riding on bikes with a lot of other people in boxes. So weird! Continue on to read about Amy, Steve and I being glad that we didn’t have to do any of these super hard tasks.

We made our calls for who we thought would be eliminated. Amy and I were voting for the gay couple to be last while Steve thought it was going to be the wrestlers.

The dentists were the first to leave the pit stop in Shetland Islands and were still pretty smug about being first. I really hoped they lost their lead somehow since they were bugging me. They had to take a 13-hour ferry to Aberdeen and then find a flight to Copenhagen, Denmark. When purchasing ferry tickets, the dentists learned that they had many hours before the ferry left so they asked for a travel agent. The ticket lady told them there wasn’t one on the island, but did direct them to a library where they can do their own research. They went and did that and called to book tickets arriving in Denmark at 4 PM. The ferry ticket lady did not share the library information with any of the other teams that came later, so when they were on the ferry,  half of them were going to a travel agency and half of them were going straight to the airport.

The ones that went to the travel agency knew it wouldn’t be open for a couple hours. I’m not sure why they didn’t go straight to the airport like the other teams. The cyclists were one of the teams that went straight to the airport and found a flight that arrived at 2 PM, way ahead of the dentist flight. The gay couple found one that arrived at 5:15 PM and the wrestlers found one at arrived at 5:10 PM. The cyclists took off before the teams at the travel agency even booked their flights. For some reason the mother/daughter team were booked on a flight that arrived at 5:20 PM and the remaining three teams that booked at the travel agency after them were on the same flight that arrived at 5:10 PM. The gay couple’s flight ended up delayed about 20 minutes, but they weren’t last. The mother/daughter team’s flight was over an hour late so they were the last team to arrive in Denmark.

Phil popped up again to talk to the camera while a team was trying to race. I guess it was okay to delay the cyclists who were so far ahead of the other teams, but it was slightly awkward while they opened their clue, but couldn’t read it outloud until he was done blabbing about what they were about to do.

Teams had to jump into a car and drive to Sweden. They were using an energy efficient car. They couldn’t race to the next location because they were only allowed to use 1/10 a gallon of gas. If they did that, then they would receive their next clue. If they didn’t drive nicely, they would have to answer a geography question to get their clue.

Once teams arrived in Sweden, they found a detour that was back in Denmark. The first choice was building two different settings — garden or living room– in a parklette and making sure to get all the details right in a 30 minute time limit. If they didn’t get it done in time, they would have to try it again in another parking space. The other choice was putting the finishing decorating touches on a cake and then delivering it by bicycle to a restaurant before returning back to the bakery with a signed receipt.

The cyclists arrived in Sweden and got their clue right away. They chose the bike choice since they had to because of their job. Both Amy and I thought it looked super hard and would have gone for the other one, even though, it did remind Amy of the time teams had to set up the trailer park in Florida and it was super windy and blew everyone’s stuff away. Hilarious!

The cyclists finish putting the cake together, took it out to their weird bike and then when they started moving, it fell apart. They decided to get to the restaurant first and then put it back together.  They then continued to run into the curb a few times. If they can’t get it, how is any other team going to get it?

The dentists arrived in Sweden and drove way too fast so they did not get there efficiently and had to do the separate geography task which was naming the capitals of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. That’s easy! They had to go find someone and asked them to Google it for them. Silly people. They weren’t the silliest though! When the wrestlers were driving, Mr. Wrestler asked if Sweden was a different country. Amy said it was sometimes.

A mess of people arrived in Sweden at the same time. The Survivor team was the only one that drove efficiently and got their clue right away. The wrestlers, surfers and scientists all had to go answer the geography question.  Everyone chose the wedding cake except the dentists and scientists. I was confused why so many people were going with transporting a cake on a bike over a parklette that would take 30 minutes at the most, unless they sucked at moving things.

The mother/daughter team finally arrived at the airport and started driving to Sweden around the time that the cyclists arrived with their cake. They put it back together and delivered it. Then they couldn’t find the receipt that had to be signed to show they delivered it. It was nowhere in their fanny packs or bras (they checked) so they went outside and were about to head back to decorate another cake, when they checked a random piece of paper on the ground and it was the receipt. Lucky! Then, when they returned the receipt to the bakery, they asked if they could have a treat and the baker gave them one! They went off to another restaurant to get their next clue.

Meanwhile,  the dentists were hoping the cyclists were having problems with the cake challenge while they arrived at the parklette so they could blow right past them. I don’t think that’s going to happen, buddy. They are already done with their detour. They picked the garden setting and proclaimed they were really good with attention to detail.

The wrestlers, surfers and Survivor teams arrived at the bakery and started working on their cakes. The scientists showed up at the parklette when the dentists had been there for about 10 minutes already. The dentists’ flight was about an hour earlier than the scientists’ flight. Did they get lost finding the parklette? The scientists picked the living room setting and also proclaimed they were quite detail-oriented.

Around this time the gay couple showed up in Sweden, but they drove too fast. They totally knew the geography questions without asking anyone for help, which made them the only team to accomplish that. They decided to do the parklette. Soon after the mother/daughter showed up and actually drove slow enough so they got the detour clue immediately. They also chose the parklette task.

The cyclists arrived at the next restaurant, which was a road block. They had to be waiters at a sandwich shop,  which had over 150 different kinds of sandwiches, and take four sandwich orders by number, go to a menu on a wall and memorize the sandwich that went with each number and what was on each sandwich and then go repeat the number and sandwich fixins to the chef. Super hard!

While one of the cyclists was struggling with remembering the four different numbers of the order so she could go see the ingredients on the wall menu, the cake teams were taking off with their cakes. The Survivor team was driving into traffic instead of using the bike lane. That team and the surfers didn’t get very far before they abandoned the cake task and switched to the other one, leaving poor abandoned cakes all over the streets.

The dentists had a check on their parklette when it was close to 30 minutes, but something wasn’t correct. They couldn’t figure out what it could be before the time was up and they had to start over in the space right next to them. The producers loved to have the voiceover of Mr. Dentist playing, “No one should pass us,” even though one team already had. They were frustrated and wondered if the other task was easier.

As the dentists and other teams struggled with the detours, the cyclists were finishing up the sandwich task. They did ask if they could get a sandwich to go too. They then realized they had the clue to the pit stop so they hurried up and took off. They were headed to the pit stop when no other team had even finished the detour  or arrived at the road block.

The scientists were getting close to finishing up their parklette when the surfers and Survivor team arrived. The dentists seemed relieved to see other teams showing up to work on that task. Amazingly, around this time, the wrestlers managed to finish the cake task. Mr. Wrestler asked the restaurant if he could eat the cake topper. She said no. He was so very sad everyone kept saying no to him.

At the parklette task, the dentists were trying a third time as the scientists were told they were done. When they ran off, the surfers got a check on their space while all the teams wondered if the wrestlers actually finished with the cake task. The surfers were told the setting was not correct so they had to start over. The Survivor team was done correctly though. It seemed like the living room setting was the way to go since the garden one was harder. After being told again that it was wrong, the dentists decided to switch detours.

Around this time, the cyclists were arriving at the pit stop that also included two big dogs! They both won the electric hybrid cars they had been driving around earlier for coming in first.

At the road block, the scientists and wrestlers were arriving at the same time. Mr. Wrestler informed the judge the task would be hard for him since he was a wrestler and gets hit in the head a lot. While he and Maya from the scientists worked on trying to remember the sandwiches, the gay couple finally showed up at the parking space challenge. They asked the surfers what flight they landed on. They shooed them away since it was a timed challenge and they were trying to figure their shit out. The gay couple was like, “They seem frazzled!”  The mother/daughter team showed up soon after and were so happy to see other teams there.

At the roadblock, the Survivor lady was going crazy because Maya kept saying the sandwich ingredients out loud when she was trying to memorize them. Mr. Wrestler was pretty hilarious when they told the judge the ingredients by saying they sounded delicious, but it still took him a while to get it right. When Maya finally got it, she did a little breakdance on the floor. Amy said, “Please get off the floor.”  The wrestlers finished soon after the scientists. Once Maya was out of there, the Survivor team also finished up.

The dentists were at the cake challenge and saying how it was way easier when they had just finished putting the cake together. You aren’t even on the bike yet! But after a few rough starts, they got the hang of it and were able to get to the restaurant fairly easily.

Over with the parking challenge both the surfers and gay couple figured out at the same time that there were different number of flower petals painted on each side of a pot and everyone was picking the wrong side so many times. That left the mother/daughter team as the last one at the parking space detour.

Around that time, the dentists were finding out that they had dropped a flag on the way to the restaurant so they had to take the cake all the way back and get another one. Oh no! It was not their day. It was starting to get dark for the mother/daughter team as they were bickering over what needed to go where in the parking space.

At the pit stop, the wrestlers showed up in second place and the Survivor team showed up in third place even though they both left after the scientists. They must have gotten lost on the way.  They did finally show up though before the rest of the teams.

The gay couple and surfers showed up at the road block at the same time. The gay couple finished it really quickly and around the time the dentists showed up. Surfer dude got it wrong the first time and so did Mrs. Dentist. She was entertaining since she sang the ingredients because it helped her remember. She kept being told she was wrong as Mr. Surfer and mother/daughter got it correct.

The gay couple checked into the pit stop. The surfers and  mother/daughter teams were getting lost on the way to the pit stop.  The dentists realized they would have to use their Save on this leg. Mrs. Dentist finally reread the clue after an hour of trying and realized she hadn’t been saying the sandwich numbers before rattling off the ingredients. She did that and finally finished the task.

After one fight, the mom decided to just shut down and not say anything to her daughter. When the daughter noticed Phil on the mat, the mom said that she saw something on the corner, but decided to not say anything. At this point, we were all ready for this team to go home since they were just being stupid. They checked into the pit stop in sixth place and there was major drama at the mat. It even made the big dogs at the mat with Phil sad. The surfers arrived and thought they were last, but Phil made them happy right away saying they were in seventh place. Then the dentists knew they were in last place and handed over the Save. Phil gave it back since it was a non-elimination leg. Uggg! Mr. Dentist said it would be humbling, but we doubt that it really will be in future legs.

What did you think about the mother/daughter shenanigans? Do you wish this had been an elimination leg so the dentists had to use their Save?
