Amazing Race: Derpy Beginnings

derphole

This was the leg that we noticed that one of the scientists was really derpy. When they found out they made it into the race, she injured herself while training and did something with her pelvis that caused her to run funny. She never complained about it, but she did do a lot of derpy things. Falling into a hole was just one of them. Continue on to read the comments that Amy and I made while watching teams go to Morocco to build food carts, remove hair from animal hides, pour tea and twirl tassles from their hats.

As we watched the previously on scenes from the last episode, both Amy and I were annoyed by the mother/daughter team all over again and picked them to be last mostly because we were irritated with them. Steve said he didn’t want to pick a losing team yet and we told him he would be disqualified from this high-stakes game unless he picked a team before the show started. He finally went with T&T.

Teams flew to Morocco. We learned while they headed to the airport that the wrestlers don’t know what maracas are actually called. Robbie was shaking his hand saying, “Play the morocco!” Brooke said, “It is morrocos!” while shaking both of her hands. He said, “No, morroco is the circular thing with all the bells around it.” I’m glad we got that straight.

Teams left the pit stop at night and the next flights to Morocco weren’t until the morning so all teams were stuck at the airport waiting. That’s where they found out that the dentists were saved because of a non-elimination leg and they still had their Save. They were not pleased.

When teams arrived in Marrakech, Morocco, they had to head to a large open market and find a marked door. Teams were running around like crazy looking for the clue box. They all found it around the same time, including the speed bump for the dentists.  All teams had to do a task where they helped a local food cart vendor roll their cart out into the marketplace and set it up. Phil called the marketplace vibrant a couple of time. Amy said, “Vibrant = crazy + monkey,” since there were monkeys everywhere. I noticed it was yet another hard task that teams had to do, but it wasn’t a detour or road block. They were also warned a U-Turn was ahead.

The dentists learned their speed bump was picking up eight rugs from a nearby vendor and hanging them up on a rope to display them using a long stick. We commented that it didn’t seem too difficult, but I thought it was sad that it wasn’t the speed bump from a previous season that consisted of eating ice cream. Amy agreed that was the best speed bump. After picking up the carpets, they were told where to hang them up on the line. This is where Misti became useless. She asked dumb questions like, “Hang all of them?” and “Do the carpets need to be facing outward?” The easy part seemed to be getting the carpet on the line, but it was difficult getting the pole unhooked once the carpet was up there. Misti tried once but when she didn’t get it, she just stood around watching Jim do it.

The food cart task seemed hard, but it was mostly just a bunch of manual labor of offloading all the cart equipment after they rolled it out into the market. Some teams had the person or persons who owned the food cart helping while other ones were just staring at the teams do all the work. It was odd. The Survivor team finished first. They said they did it because they had good attention to detail and worked together well. Actually, it was because multiple guys wanted to help the lady with the long, blonde hair so all that helped got the cart together quickly.

The Survivor team took off to the next place which was a tannery. Amy said the tannery was going to smell bad. I said that was only if they ever found it since it was in a maze of other shops. Amy said, “Sniff your way!” The cyclists, wrestlers and mother/daughter teams finished up with the carts around the time the dentists finally finished their speed bump and started setting up their cart. I thought they would be done with their speed bump before any of the other teams were finished with the cart task. The scientists, surfers and T&T all finished their carts at the same time, leaving just the dentists at that task. They finished 12 minutes later because Phil showed up to give a time update. I said they were probably thinking they didn’t know how far behind they were, but now they know. Thanks Phil! It was okay since no team had found the tannery yet.

When the teams finally found the tannery, it was a road block where one team member had to pull the hair off of three hides. Ugg! Then they had to deliver three bundles of prepared hides by bicycle to a nearby cobbler to get a receipt and then they could get their clue once they returned with that receipt. We knew teams would just be getting lost going back and forth to the cobbler, but and then they also had to rip hair off a stinky hide. Ick!

People finished up the hides at different time, but that didn’t seem to matter since everyone got lost finding the cobbler. Misti really didn’t watch where she was going riding the bike. She knocked over Nici’s bicycle after she just got all the hides tied onto it. Then she was looking over her shoulder while turning and ran into a motorcycle. She was a hot mess.

TJ accidentally wandered into the cobbler, but all the other teams were nearby so everyone was getting their receipts and heading back to the tannery at the same time. Nici got there first, so mother/daughter ran to the clue guy. The Survivor guy also got to the clue guy at the same time but when they clue guy was about to hand over the clue to him before Survivor girl showed up, Shelley started yelling about it. While it is true that both team people need to be there get a clue from a clue box, in road blocks it is usually given to the person that completed the road block and then the team opens it up together. Even if she was correct, yelling about being right wasted more time than if she just grabbed her clue after him. It also allowed all the other teams to catch up and grab their clues at the same time.  For the mother/daughter team saying they have watched every season of the show, they do really stupid things like teams that have never seen the show.

Poor TJ who actually found the cobbler first, but got lost coming back to the tannery was the last one to arrive. When Tim saw him asked him why all the other teams passed him. He yelled, “Why do you have to say it like that?!?!”

The next task was a detour where teams had to choose between twirling or tea. With twirling, they had to wear a hat with a tassle and twirl it around their head while the other person played a drum. They had to twirl the tassle around for one minute before getting the clue. The other task had teams pick up a traditional tea set in one location and find a particular tea house where one team member had to hold a tray with just one arm while the other one poured the tea at the proper pouring height. I thought that the tea one looked easier but it involved finding places that seemed difficult to find. The twirling task didn’t see very hard if you got the hang of the twirling. Amy said, “Oh lord, I’m thinking of the tea breakdown with Luke.” Oh Luke. So much crying with him when it involved drinks.

teatime

The surfers, wrestlers and dentists picked the tea task. The tea set seemed very heavy since Jim was even complaining about his arms burning while they were trying to find the tea place.  T&T also picked the tea, but they got it way after the other teams. When the teams arrived at the tea place, they received a demonstration on what to do, but they weren’t told specifically what they had to do. They just had to watch and pick it up. The dentists and wrestlers went out and just started doing it and asking if they were doing it right. They were told it was wrong, but they didn’t know what they were doing wrong. They didn’t go back and watch the demonstration. They just kept trying again and again. The surfers, on the other hand, practiced after seeing the demo and asked the judge if they were doing it correctly. Then they went out to do it when it counted and got the clue right away.

twirling

The rest of teams chose the twirling task. They were putting on outfits and learning how to twirl. None of them were good at it. They were shaking their heads too much and the hats were falling off. They all had the same problems when they got out to the market where it counted.

After trying for a while, the cyclists switched who would do the twirling and then got it done immediately. They were in second place after the surfers, but found the next clue before them. It was a U-Turn, but they decided not to use it and went straight to the pit stop. They arrived just before the surfers. They both won $5,000 each.

Back at twirling, Nici actually gave her mom good advice. She told her that once she got the hat twirling to not change the direction of her head or twirling and to not change the pace. He mom listened and they finished the task! They got to the U-Turn and were trying to decide between the Survivor team or the dentists (to force them to use their Save). They could see the twirling teams from where they were though so they went with the Survivor team to U-Turn.

In the tea place, T&T got it correct on their second try. The wrestlers were still confused. The dentists finally watched the demo after nine tries and realized that Misti needed to use just one hand instead of two. They got it corrected on their 10th attempt. Right after them, the wrestlers figured out they needed to pour it higher and got the clue on their 8th attempt.

With twirling, the scientists finally switched since Maya couldn’t keep the hat on her head. Amy got it immediately so they should have done that sooner. Survivor team was freaking out that they couldn’t get it. Whitney wanted to switch but Keith wanted to stay.

While a bunch of teams were headed to the U-Turn, T&T got to the pit stop before the mother/daughter team because they had to go pay their taxi. No one else wanted to U-Turn anyone. They all wanted to save it for another leg. I really wanted the dentists to be U-Turned. The wrestlers, dentists and scientists finished up around the same time. The Survivor team did come in last and no one was sad to see them eliminated and seeing them have to pay for their own honeymoon because they had been hoping they would win a trip from Amazing Race.

Before we go through, let’s checked out Jim’s crazy eyes when he says he is excited.

Were you one of the few people out there that wished the Survivor team didn’t get U-Turned? Well, they would have been last even without the U-Turn. Were you sad to see them go?
