Big Hero 6

Big Hero 6 looks like a Pixar film, even though it isn’t. It does come from Walt Disney Animation Studios and since Disney purchased Pixar a few years back, I guess it’s okay if they make a movie that has  the heart of a Pixar film, even if it doesn’t follow through with the story. This film is about a boy robotics prodigy, Hiro,  who is dealing with some major life issues when he stumbles across a robot prototype that his older brother created called Baymax. He’s a nurse robot that is programmed to heal and looks like a big marshmellow with legs. When Hiro’s city of San Fransokyo is terrorized by a big baddie, he decides he needs to turn his healing robot into a fighting machine with the help of his friends.

Baymax is the best part of the movie. I loved the first two-thirds of the movie that deals with Hiro getting to know Baymax and cruising around what his city of San Fran Fransokyo, which is what it would look like if San Francisco and Tokyo became one city. It’s pretty awesome to recognize parts of the city while laughing at whatever Baymax was saying or doing.

It’s the rest of the movie that is pretty simple and almost boring. His friends are not memorable and even the villain subplot seem more like an excuse to end the film with a big climatic fight when I don’t know if that was really necessary. I would have loved more interaction between Hiro and Baymax. It makes me wonder if this was a Pixar film, if it would have had a better overall story compared to this one. I wouldn’t mind watching it again or at least the first half of it since that’s really the best part. I also want my own Baymax.

Grade: B
