I’ve gone back and forth on what my next movie will be, but I will go with one of my all-time favorite movies. It has a dumb plot, but I found it hilarious when I first saw it in fourth grade. Every time my brother and I would go to the video store, we would rent it. This was back in the days that no one owned movies since they all cost around $100, but I’m pretty sure we spent that after all the times we rented it. You don’t even have to like beer to enjoy it since I wasn’t not a beer fan in fourth grade.
It also shows that Rick Moranis was once cool. Please don’t hate it because it is Canadian!

Strange Brew
Netflix synopsis: Hoping to snag some free beer by helping a brewery owner reclaim her business, goofy Canadian brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie (SCTV’s Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) wind up battling criminal Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow), who plans to take over the world by releasing his hypnotic brew to the beer-guzzling population. Now, the fate of humankind lies in the hands of Canada’s biggest “hosers” in this classic comedy.

Marci has the July pick and she picked Heavy Metal.

Heavy Metal
Netflix synopsis: Based on the fantastical illustrated magazine Heavy Metal, producer Ivan Reitman creates an otherworldly tale of good vs. evil. Packed with special effects, Heavy Metal set the standard for alternative contemporary animation. Plus a pounding soundtrack by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo and more!

Stacy has joined the Movie Watching Group so she picked the May movie. She was a big fan of Christian Slater in the ’80s. She was going to go with Gleaming the Cube, but that was not available to rent on DVD so she went with Heathers. I think that is a much better choice. Watch and review!

Heathers
Netflix synopsis: At Westburg High, you’re either a Heather or a nobody. And while Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) may not be named Heather, she’s a Heather in spirit, waging battles in the full-scale popularity war. But just when it all gets to be too much, she meets mysterious newcomer Jason (Christian Slater), who offers her the perfect — albeit deadly — solution to end the Heathers’ social tyranny. Teen angst has rarely been this darkly funny or poignant.

For this month Movie Watching - I have chosen the movie based on my favorite book when I was growing up.

The Outsiders
From Netflix:
Francis Ford Coppola’s drama about teen turmoil in rural Oklahoma features nearly every big name of 1980s cinema — including Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio and Patrick Swayze. In this faithful adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s popular novel, the hardscrabble “Greasers” face off against the affluent “Socs,” and the resulting conflict proves sad and deadly for these ultimately lovable delinquents.

Hi Everyone!
I am choosing the movie for February - sorry that I am late!
The movie will be Always - directed by Steven Spielberg, staring Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfus.
Hope you enjoy!

Netflix Synopsis: Director Steven Spielberg delivers an old-fashioned romantic adventure, as firefighting pilot Richard Dreyfuss perishes in the line of duty and comes back from the beyond to watch over his replacement (Brad Johnson) and his true love (Holly Hunter). Exciting, romantic and featuring Audrey Hepburn’s final screen appearance, Always reaffirms the adage “What you give away, you keep forever.”

Jer is picking our January movie for the Movie Watching Group (MWG) as Bladerunner from 1982. He was trying to pick a movie to pay Marci back for Night of the Comet, but ended up picking this one since he really wanted to see it again. There are three versions of this movie out. There is the original Theatrical Version with Harrison Ford voice over narration, then there is the Director’s Cut (the one that is linked in this post) which cuts out the narration and has a different ending, and the Final Cut just came out on DVD. I have no clue how that one is different. I’ve only ever seen the Director’s Cut. Say which one you watched when you review it.

Netflix Synopsis: In the smog-choked dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, blade runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is called out of retirement to snuff a quartet of “replicants” — androids consigned to slave labor on remote planets. They’ve escaped to Earth seeking their creator and a way to extend their short life spans. Director Ridley Scott’s reedited version comes with a different ending and the omission of Ford’s narration, giving the film a different tone.

I have picked the next movie for our Movie Watching Group (MWG) as Summer School from 1987. I loved this movie when it came out, recorded it off of cable, and watched the video copy of it very many times. It introduced me to high quality films, such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and makeup artist and creature creator, Rick Baker. I found it very educational at the time. Let’s see if I still do after watching it again.

Netflix Synopsis: Mark Harmon plays a high school coach who gives up much-needed R&R in Hawaii for a chance to earn some extra money teaching English to summer school kids. Although the teens would rather be anywhere but stuck in class for the summer, in time their instructor’s amiable, approachable and low-key way of teaching results in true learning taking place, despite their resistance — which comes as a surprise to both them and their teacher.

We have started our Movie Watching Group (MWG). Marci is up first! She has picked Night of the Comet from 1984.

Netflix Synopsis: Earth has been ripped to shreds after a run-in with a killer comet, and those who have survived are in a fight for their lives in this campy cult classic. Valley Girl Reg (Catherine Mary Stewart) and her sister (Kelli Maroney) discover they’re two of the lucky few. But scientists are after them, and now they must run. Why? Because the researchers believe they need the blood of survivors to concoct a drug that can save them all from further ruin.
