Movies Opening March 11

Category: 2011,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 2:37 pm

This week there are two alien invasion movies. One deals with it more traditionally while the other is an animated movie where aliens want to take moms. The other major movie is a retelling of  Red Riding Hood but with some kind of Twilight twist with werewolves.

Nationwide Releases

Battle: Los Angeles
Mars Needs Moms
Red Riding Hood

Battle: Los Angeles
Directed
: Jonathan Liebesman
Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Ne-Yo, Michael Peña

Synopsis: Aliens invade and people run around!

My Take: I find invasion movies very entertaining, but usually if they focus on some key characters reacting to it. This looks like mostly a bunch of people running away from the aliens, but no one in particular to root for.

RT Score: 34%
RT Consensus: Overlong and overly burdened with war movie clichés, Battle: Los Angeles will entertain only the most ardent action junkies.

FOX Upfronts

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:42 pm

In the middle of May every year, the networks get together to show off the new shows they picked up, congratulate those that they renewed and try not to talk about the shows they canceled. This year, FOX tried to deal with the effects of ending 24 and the waning popularity of American Idol, so it tried to outshine all of that with Glee, which seems to be its most popular show currently.

What Was Canceled

I think 24 went on a few seasons too long so I think it is good that it had its series finale this year. I’m surprised that Dollhouse was renewed for a second season, but still no one watched it, so I wasn’t surprised that it was canceled either. I enjoyed it while it was on.  Other FOX shows that were canceled that you might not know were even on the air: Brothers, Sit Down Shut Up, Sons of Tucson, Past Life, ‘Til Death and The Wanda Skyes Show.

Movies Opening January 22

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 9:46 pm

It is Paul Bettany’s week. He’s an archangel in Legion and Darwin in Creation. Neither one of them look very interesting though. The other wide releases don’t look too great either.

Nationwide Releases

Extraordinary Measures
Legion
Tooth Fairy

Extraordinary Measures
Directed: Tom Vaughan
Starring: Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser, Keri Russell
Trailer

Synopsis: A father goes to great lengths to pay for experimental research from the scientist that might find a cure for his sick kids.

My Take: The critics talk about it looking like a tv movie. When I first saw the commercial on tv, I thought it was for a tv movie.

RT Score: 27%
RT Consensus: Despite a timely topic and a pair of heavyweight leads, Extraordinary Measures never feels like much more than a made-for-TV tearjerker.

Movies Opening November 13

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 4:35 pm

The wide releases are about people rebelling against the establishment with rock music and the world ending in a few years. More of the interesting films are in the limited releases, including the animated Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Messenger, and Dare.

Nationwide Releases

9x9_rotten Pirate Radio
9x9_rotten 2012

pirateradio

Pirate Radio
Directed: Richard Curtis
Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Sturridge, Talulah Riley
Trailer

Synopsis: The British government did not like rock music in the 1960s so they banned it, but an American DJ and some other British folks got onto a boat and broadcast from there where no one could find them.

My Take: It seems like a fun film with some good music.

9x9_rotten RT Score: 59%
RT Consensus: It lacks genuine rock & roll raunch, but Richard Curtis’ ode to the offshore radio stations of 1960s Britain has enough laughs and great tunes to stay smoothly afloat.

TV: Week of January 11

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 4:19 pm

This week is the official start of 24 since the movie in November was just to tie the last season and this current season together. For those that have DirectTV, they have already seen the season of Friday Night Lights that is now playing on NBC. It is the final season for Battlestar Galactica and soon American Idol will dominate the airwaves while I hope its ratings continue to die so it doesn’t take over so much tv every winter and spring like it has done the past few years.

Season Finales: Real Chance of Love

Pick of the Week

241

24
Channel: FOX
Time: 8/7c
Starring: Kiefer Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Carlos Bernard, Annie Wersching, Cherry Jones, James Morrison, Jeffrey Nordling, Janeane Garofalo, Rhys Coiro, Colm Feore, Bob Gunton
Premieres: Sunday, January 11
Trailer

Synopsis: Jack Bauer is on trial in Washington, D.C. and Tony is back from the dead as the bad guy. It’s time for Jack to save the day again.

My Take: I quit watching halfway through season six since it wasn’t just beyond ridiculous but it was also boring. I am going to give it another shot to see if the extended break gave it any sort of breather it needed to revive itself back to its former glory. I found the 24: Redemption movie closer to the old version of the show so I have hope.
