Movies Opening September 10

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 7:07 pm

Only one major movie came out this week. Why? This is the short death period between summer being over and the Oscar movies start up.

Nationwide Releases

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Resident Evil: Afterlife
Directed: Paul W.S. Anderson
Starring: Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Kim Coates, Shawn Roberts, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Spencer Locke, Boris Kodjoe, Wentworth Miller, Kacey Barnfield
Trailer

Synopsis: There is more fighting and this time with another girl joining in the fighting.

My Take: There was no semblance of a plot in the trailer, just about it having super awesome 3D.

RT Score: 23%
RT Consensus: As dim-witted and lifeless as its undead antagonists, Resident Evil: Afterlife is a wholly unnecessary addition to the franchise.

Movies Opening September 3

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 3:47 pm

The Machete looks like awesomely trashy fun for a three-day weekend. I think Going the Distance actually looks like a romantic comedy that I could actually stand to watch.

Nationwide Releases

Machete
The American
Going the Distance

Machete
Directed: Robert Rodriguez, Ethan Maniquis
Starring: Danny Trejo, Steven Segal, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey, Cheech Marin, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro
Trailer

Synopsis: They actually made a movie out of one of the joke trailers for Grindhouse.

My Take: It looks ridiculously awesome.

RT Score: 73%
RT Consensus: Machete is messy, violent, shallow, and tasteless — and that’s precisely the point of one of the summer’s most cartoonishly enjoyable films.

TV: Week of September 21

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:10 pm

Fall TV Season is upon us. Even though quite a few shows got an early start this month, this week is the official season premiere week. Beware, this post will be huge!

Season Finales: Top Gear, Warehouse 13

Pick of the Week

dexter

Dexter
Channel: SHO
Time: 9/8c
Starring: Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Velez, David Zayas, James Remar
Premieres: Sunday, September 27
Trailer

Synopsis: Dexter got married and found out he had a kid on the way. Can a serial killer really have the perfect life? This season also stars a very successful serial killer for Dexter to admire, played by John Lithgow.

My Take: I keep wondering how long the show can last before it’ll burn itself out since he can’t keep killing forever, can he? But I’ll continue to watch it as it continues to be so very excellent.

Movies Opening April 24

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 4:59 pm

This week’s movies get right to the point with their one-word titles. The trend even carries over into the limited releases a bit. Soloist was supposed to come out last year, but it was pushed back to this spring, which isn’t the biggest sign of confidence from the movie studio for the film. Obsessed and Fighting seemed geared towards the teenagers that will fill up the mall movie theaters this weekend. Limited releases include a Mike Tyson documentary, major government scandal in Italy in the early ’90s, overpriced preschools in New York City, hidden mutant armies attacking humans and Bret Easton Ellis’ latest film about the beautiful and drugged out people in L.A.

Nationwide Releases

The Soloist
Directed: Joe Wright
Starring: Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey Jr., Catherine Keener, Tom Hollander
Trailer

Synopsis: A former musical prodigy is found by an L.A. journalist living in the streets and tries to bring him back to the promise he once had.

My Take: I like that it has the added struggle of the musician dealing with some kind of mental illness instead of just being a rags-to-riches type story.

9x9_fresh RT Score: 61%
RT Consensus: Though it features strong performances by its lead players, a lack of narrative focus prevents The Soloist from hitting its mark.

TV: Week of September 21

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:14 pm

This is the official season premiere week, which is why everything in the world is new. Set up those TiVo and DVRs to catch everything you want to watch!

Pick of the Week

Heroes
Channel: NBC
Time: 9/8c
Premieres: Monday, September 22 (two-hour premiere)
Starring: Masi Oka, Hayden Panettiere, Christine Rose, Adrian Pasdar, Greg Grunberg, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Ali Larter, Milo Ventimiglia, James Kyson Lee, Dania Ramirez, Zachary Quinto, Jack Coleman
Trailer

Synopsis: The season ended with Nathan Petrelli getting shot at a press conference where he was about to reveal his superpower. This season, his shooter is revealed and everyone has to deal with all the bad guys locked up in Level 5 being released.

My Take: After last season doing a poor job introducing new characters while ignoring fan favorites, this season is trying hard to win those fans back. I’ve stuck with it so far, so I’ll give it a shot.
