Movies Opening March 11

Category: 2011,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 2:37 pm

This week there are two alien invasion movies. One deals with it more traditionally while the other is an animated movie where aliens want to take moms. The other major movie is a retelling of  Red Riding Hood but with some kind of Twilight twist with werewolves.

Nationwide Releases

Battle: Los Angeles
Mars Needs Moms
Red Riding Hood

Battle: Los Angeles
Directed
: Jonathan Liebesman
Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Ne-Yo, Michael Peña

Synopsis: Aliens invade and people run around!

My Take: I find invasion movies very entertaining, but usually if they focus on some key characters reacting to it. This looks like mostly a bunch of people running away from the aliens, but no one in particular to root for.

RT Score: 34%
RT Consensus: Overlong and overly burdened with war movie clichés, Battle: Los Angeles will entertain only the most ardent action junkies.

Movies Opening March 26

The wide releases actually look like a good time at the movies. It’s about time.

Nationwide Releases

Hot Tub Time Machine
How to Train Your Dragon

Hot Tub Time Machine
Directed: Steve Pink
Starring: Crispin Glover, John Cusack, Lizzy Caplan, Chevy Chase, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, Craig Robinson
Trailer

Synopsis: For reasons unknown, four guys get into a hot tub and wake up in 1986 where shenanigans ensue.

My Take: It looks completely dumb and hilarious.

RT Score: 63%
RT Consensus: Its flagrantly silly script — and immensely likable cast — make up for most of its flaws.

Movies Opening February 5

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 8:02 pm

Some mindless action movies and super sappy love stories this week.

Nationwide Releases

From Paris With Love
Dear John

From Paris With Love
Directed: Pierre Morel
Starring: John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Kasia Smutniak, Richard Durden
Trailer

Synopsis: One cop gets partnered up with crazy, renegade cop. Oh, I wonder what’ll happen?

My Take: It is from the director of Taken and looks to be about as ridiculous.

RT Score: 33%
RT Consensus: Though not without its charms — chief among them John Travolta’s endearingly over-the-top performance — From Paris with Love is too muddled and disjointed to satisfy.

TV: Week of January 10

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 4:54 pm

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! It is a cornucopia of new shows in one night, which is odd for January. The Simpsons has its 450th episode. There are also the season premieres of Big Love and Chuck. After tonight, Chuck will move to its normal time slot on Monday nights, pushing Heroes back an hour. How I Met Your Mother has its 100th episode on Monday night, which will feature a lot of singing. Just to confuse things, Fringe will air a new episode on Monday night while following up another new one on its usual Thursday night.

NBC renewed Southland for a second season. While the show was filming that second season, NBC canceled it before it ever got a chance to air its second season. TNT picked it up and will be running the first season episodes starting this week, followed immediately at what would have been its second season.

Season Finales: Sanctuary

Pick of the Week

Chuck
Channel: NBC
Time: 9/8c
Starring: Zachary Levi, Adam Baldwin, Yvonne Strahovski, Joshua Gomez, Sarah Lancaster, Ryan McPartlin
Premieres: Sunday, January 10
Trailer

Synopsis: Chuck got a new version of the Intersect downloaded into his head, which gave him various talents like knowing kung fu, the tango and Flamenco guitar. He has a bit of a problem controlling his new-found abilities though.

My Take: It is a fun, goofy, and romantic spy show that more people should watch. As TV Guide’s Matt Roush has stated, it would be a perfect fit on USA since it fits the mold of its other shows.

Movies Opening September 18

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 10:19 pm

Movies are weird this weekend. First, Matt Damon and Steven Soderbergh are together again in a very weird whistleblower movie. Second, Megan Fox stars in a very weird sexy horror comedy. Third, an animated movie stars huge falling meatballs and hot dogs. Then, there is another boring romantic comedy to mess up the weirdness of everything else.

The Informant!
Directed: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale, Melanie Lynskey
Trailer

Synopsis: Based on a true story, a whistleblower in a huge industry is a bumbling fool that has some secrets of his own.

My Take: I haven’t seen the movie, but watching the trailer reminds me how awesome Matt Damon is.

9x9_fresh RT Score: 76%
RT Consensus: A charismatic turn by star Matt Damon and a consistently ironic tone boost this quietly funny satire about a corporate whistle-blower.

TV: Week of January 18

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 7:24 pm

This week, it is major premiere time for cable series, especially tonight. The only exception is Wednesday when Lost finally returns and FOX has its premiere of the Tim Roth show Lie to Me.  On Tuesday, it is pretty much Barack Obama inauguration. Every network station will be televising it except FOX and CW, which are instead showing new episodes of their usual night of shows. On Friday, on SCI-FI network, there will be the cable run of old canceled shows Invasion and Moonlight in case you never watched, but wanted to check them out.

Season Finale: Momma’s Boys

Pick of the Week

lost2

Lost
Channel: ABC
Time: 9/8c
Starring: Matthew Fox, Michael Emerson, Jorge Garcia, Elizabeth Mitchell, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, Terry O’Quinn, Naveen Andrews, Yunjin Kim, Henry Ian Cusick
Premieres: Wednesday, January 21
Trailer

Synopsis: All of those that got off the island, now want to get back on it to save those that they left behind, but the island apparently disappeared soon after they were rescued.

My Take: The show vastly improved since they decided on a final end date. I can’t wait for each new episode.
