Movies Opening April 29, 2011

It shocks me that there is not only a fifth movie in The Fast and the Furious series, but it is also the one with the best reviewed one. Is it really stellar or have the reviewers just given up on a quality film and accept it as a  no-brainer action flick?

Nationwide Releases

 Fast Five
 Prom
 Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs Evil
 Dylan Dog: Dead of Night

Fast Five
Directed
: Justin Lin
Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Elsa Pataky, Joaquim De Almeida, Dwayne Johnson

Synopsis: The Rock joins everyone else for more car chases.

 RT Score: 78%
RT Consensus: Sleek, loud, and over the top, Fast Five proudly embraces its brainless action thrills and injects new life into the franchise.

Movies Opening November 24

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 8:42 pm

The two Certified Fresh movies are the latest Disney movie, Tangled, and the limited release The King’s Speech. The rest of the wide releases seem like goofy fun, but nothing too great.

Nationwide Releases

Tangled
Burlesque
Faster
Love and Other Drugs

Tangled
Directed: Byron Howard, Nathan Greno
Starring: Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, Ron Perlman, M.C. Gainey, Jeffrey Tambor, Brad Garrett, Paul F. Tompkins
Trailer

Synopsis: A take on Rapunzel where a guy who is wanted by many bad guys hides in a tower where he is then taken hostage by a girl with super long hair.

My Take: It seems pretty standard Disney fare that I quit watching years ago, unless it is Pixar.

RT Score: 88%
RT Consensus: While far from Disney’s greatest film, Tangled is a visually stunning, thoroughly entertaining addition to the studio’s classic animated canon.

TV: Week of September 7

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 7:18 pm

This week has a lot more good shows debuting compared to last week. There is a lot to recommend and hard to pick one as the pick of the week since I’ve seen Fringe and it is very good, but I’m going with True Blood as the pick since it is produced by Alan Ball and looks like HBO is finally getting back to its classic good shows after a run of pretty lames ones last year.

Pick of the Week

True Blood
Channel: HBO
Time: 9/8c
Premieres: Sunday, Sep 7
Starring: Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Nelson Ellis
Trailer

Synopsis: Scientists have found a blood synthetic that vampires can use so humans are safe and vampires can live out in the open. Not everyone buys that they won’t be attacked though, especially religious folks. A waitress, who has her own special gift of hearing everyone’s thoughts, is thrilled by a vampire that comes into her diner since his thoughts are actually closed off to her. She finds his mysteriousness sexy.

My Take: I love Alan Ball. I loved Six Feet Under and I love vampires, so this seems like a natural show for me to watch.
