TV: Week of April 24

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:32 pm

Later on this week, it is all about the Royal Wedding. I’m still confused if anyone in the U.S. really cares about it as much as the news makes out. Also this week, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations has its season finale in the northern part of Japan. It was filmed just weeks before the earthquake happened.

Pick of the Week

Treme
Channel:
HBO
Time: 10/9c
Starring:
Wendell Pierce, Steve Zahn, Clarke Peters, Khandi Alexander, Melissa Leo, Kim Dickens, Rob Brown, Lucia Micarelli, Michiel Huisman, Jon Seda, David Morse, India Ennenga, John Goodman

Synopsis: The series picks up seven months after the last season ended and fourteen months after Hurricane Katrina.  Anthony Bourdain is one of the series writers this season.

My Take: I gave up after three episodes of the first season, but I might force myself to go through it since I’m interested again with Anthony Bourdain writing.

Movies Opening June 26

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 10:41 pm

I would think this summer would have more big movies that I wanted to see, but it seems to be another week of sad wide releases. The one film that actually looks interesting is the limited release, The Hurt Locker. It looks like a really good, intense war film.

Nationwide Releases

9x9_rotten Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
9x9_rotten My Sisters Keeper

transformersrevengeofthefallen

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Directed: Michael Bay
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Dunn
Trailer

Synopsis: Sam tries to go to college, but the Autobots call on his help against the Decepticons again, which somehow involves destroying the pyramids in Egypt.

My Take: I had a hard enough time telling which transformer was which in the first one. I don’t imagine it’ll be any easier to tell them apart in the sequel.

9x9_rotten RT Score: 21%
RT Consensus: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a noisy, underplotted, and overlong special effects extravaganza that lacks a human touch.

Movies Opening Oct 24

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 7:00 pm

Not a banner week for wide release movies. A lame cop drama, a scary musical and a stupid horror movie.  The limited releases look more interesting, but they are true weird indie films.

Nationwide Releases

Pride and Glory
High School Musical 3: Senior Year
Saw V

Pride & Glory
Directed: Gavin O’Connor
Starring: Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, Noah Emmerich, Jennifer Ehle
Trailer

Synopsis: Two cop brothers–one good and one bad–are at odds with each other over some other cops’ deaths and family loyalty.

My Take: I like Edward Norton, but it just doesn’t look good.

RT Score: 34%
RT Consensus: Formulaic in its plotting and cliched in its dialogue, Pride and Glory does little to distinguish itself from other police procedurals.
