Movies Opening February 26

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 3:15 pm

I thought The Crazies sounded really dumb when I first saw the commercial, but it is getting good reviews so maybe it is a decent horror film. There are some messed up limited releases that are out this week too.

Nationwide Releases

Cop Out
The Crazies

Cop Out
Directed: Kevin Smith
Starring: Seann William Scott, Jason Lee, Adam Brody, Tracy Morgan, Bruce Willis, Kevin Pollak, Guillermo Díaz
Trailer

Synopsis: Two cops bumbling around looking for a movie plot.

My Take: Kevin Smith directed this movie? I can see the reason why his name isn’t attached to any of the trailers.

RT Score: 20%
RT Consensus: Cop Out is a cliched buddy action/comedy that suffers from stale gags and slack pacing.

Movies Opening November 6

While the wide releases are not very fresh, I still think Men Who Stare at Goats looks like a good time. I will continue to give Richard Kelly a shot at movies since I loved Donnie Darko so much, even though I hated his last film. A Christmas Carol freaks me out, and not in the good way. Fourth Kind just looks boring and not scary, especially when I first saw the trailer before Paranormal Activity.

The Men Who Stare at Goats
Directed: Grant Heslov
Starring: George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey
Trailer

Synopsis: A journalist follows a military man around who is the best of the psychic soldier program.

My Take: It looks hilarious, plus Ewan McGregor being in it is a bonus.

9x9_rotten RT Score: 58%
RT Consensus: Though The Men Who Stare at Goats is a mostly entertaining, farcical glimpse of men at war, some may find its satire and dark humor less than edgy.

Movies Opening March 27

When I first heard about Monsters vs. Aliens, I thought it was the typical kid animation film that I could ignore, and I thought the blue blob was a bit of a ripoff from the green blob in Ghostbusters. I do find the trailers have won me over. The Haunting movie looks like it could be pretty creepy or it could be like all the other horror movies that come out these days and that could make it predictable. Finally, there is a movie directed by Renny Harlin who made the blockbuster Cutthroat Island! Don’t all line up for 12 Rounds at once.

Monsters vs. Aliens
Directed: Conrad Vernon, Rob Letterman
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogan
Trailer

Synopsis: When aliens keep invading Earth, the government brings out its hidden stash of monsters to fight back.

My Take: It doesn’t look super fabulous, but pretty amusing and cute.

9x9_fresh RT Score: 68%
RT Consensus: Though it doesn’t approach the depth of the best animated films, Monsters Vs. Aliens has enough humor and special effects to entertain moviegoers of all ages.
