Movies Opening April 1

The most interesting movie released this week is not in the wide releases, but in the limited releases. It is the horror film Rubber about a killer tire. Yes, you read that right. It is getting good reviews. Craziness!

TV: Week of June 27

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 6:44 pm

Tonight, the Daytime Emmy Awards are on and I’m wondering how much longer they can hold these awards with the broadcast networks canceling soap operas left and right. In Plain Sight ends its third season on Wednesday. On Thursday, the not-hyped 100 Questions ends its first season. I did not hear any buzz about that show so I’m pretty sure no one watched it. Then on Saturday, the last episode of Three Rivers will shown. ABC has also started to burn off the remaining episodes of The Forgotten on that night too.

Pick of the Week

Rescue Me
Channel: FX
Time:
10/9c
Starring:
Denis Leary, Michael Lombardi, Steven Pasquale, Andrea Roth, John Scurti, Daniel Sunjata, Callie Thorne, Adam Ferrara, Larenz Tate
Premieres: Tuesday, June 29
Trailer

Synopsis: After being sober most of last season, Tommy started drinking again and convinced most of his family to start back up again too, which led to Tommy getting shot at the end of last season by his uncle.

My Take: It is an awesome mix of screwed-up drama and laugh out loud comedy.

Pineapple Express
Directed: David Gordon Green
Starring: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Amber Heard, Danny McBride, Gary Cole
Trailer

Synopsis: A stoner unintentionally witnesses a murder and gets his stoner friend to help him with not getting killed.

I believe I don’t find stoner comedies as others find stoner comedies since I find most of them to be pretty stupid. I thought I would laugh at most of their stupidness in this movie when they were stoned and I did a lot of the time, but it just wasn’t very consistent. There were times when the movie just dragged on a bit too long. That might have been our fault since we watched the extended version. It might have been those longer bits that really would have been funnier if they were cut short and just moved on.

Movies Released September 26

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 12:05 pm

None of the wide releases seem super interesting this week. There is a WWII war movie that has the most potential. There is also some stupid thriller, mushy older people love story, and marriage-on-the-rocks fable that only having faith God can save. The limited releases don’t look much better. There are tons of documentaries and only Choke seems interesting to me this week.

Nationwide Releases

Miracle at St. Anna
Directed: Spike Lee
Starring: Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, Laz Alonso, Omar Benson Miller
Trailer

Synopsis: During World War II, an all-black unit gets separated from the other troops in Tuscany, Italy. They must fend for themselves and risk their lives to save an Italian boy.

My Take: It seems like an interesting story that just happens to be set during a World War.

RT Score: 27%
RT Consensus: Miracle at St. Anna is a well-intentioned but overlong, disjointed affair that hits few of the right notes.

Nationwide Releases

Pineapple Express
Directed: David Gordon Green
Starring: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Amber Heard, Danny McBride, Gary Cole
Trailer

Synopsis: A stoner unintentionally witnesses a murder and gets his stoner friend to help him with not getting killed.

My Take: Along the same lines as Superbad and Knocked Up, so it should be good times.

RT Score: 69%
RT Consensus: Both funny and scatter shot, this loose-knit action/buddy/stoner comedy bridges genres and keeps a steady tempo of low ball laughs.
