Movies Opening Oct 24

Category: 2008, Movies, Openingvelveetahead @ 7:00 pm

Not a banner week for wide release movies. A lame cop drama, a scary musical and a stupid horror movie.  The limited releases look more interesting, but they are true weird indie films.

Nationwide Releases

Pride and Glory
High School Musical 3: Senior Year
Saw V

Pride & Glory
Directed: Gavin O’Connor
Starring: Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, Noah Emmerich, Jennifer Ehle
Trailer

Synopsis: Two cop brothers–one good and one bad–are at odds with each other over some other cops’ deaths and family loyalty.

My Take: I like Edward Norton, but it just doesn’t look good.

RT Score: 34%
RT Consensus: Formulaic in its plotting and cliched in its dialogue, Pride and Glory does little to distinguish itself from other police procedurals.

Movies Opening Feb 22

Category: 2008, Movies, Openingvelveetahead @ 11:16 pm

Nationwide Releases

Be Kind Rewind
Directed: Michel Gondry
Starring: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover
Trailer

Synopsis: Two video store guys have all their VHS tapes erased, but instead of buying new videos (or possibly upgrading to DVD), they make their own versions of the movies, hoping no one would notice.

My Take: I have no idea why anyone would watch VHS tapes still, but it looks hilarious.

RT Score: 69%
RT Consensus: Slighter and less disciplined than Gondry’s previous mind-benders.

Duchess of Langeais

The Duchess of Langeais

Directed: Jacques Rivette
Starring: Jeanne Balibar, Guillaume Depardieu

A woman flirts with a general who proclaims his love for her, but she does not return the love while teasing that she might one day. When he is finally fed up, she realizes she is in love with him, but it is too late. Seen at the Portland International Film Festival.

What I thought would be a bodice-ripping, French romance set in the 1820s was a horribly dull mess. I had hopes when the general declared his love for the duchess after meeting her for a total of five minutes, which was completely unbelievable, but I was going to go with it. Nothing happened though! She would offer him her hand to kill or possibly her forehead. How sexy! She wanted to keep up appearances since Paris was so vain and she did not want to be part of gossip. I thought back in those days everyone had lovers, but they did it in secret. I guess you couldn’t keep anything secret with his leg.
