Movies Opening December 23

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 3:21 pm

For the holiday weekend, there is one decent movie to watch with the latest Coen brothers movie. Then there are two “family” movies that rely on the lowest-common denominator of comedy to try to get a laugh. Ick!

Nationwide Releases

True Grit
Little Fockers
Gulliver’s Travels

True Grit
Directed: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Starring: Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper, Hailee Steinfeld
Trailer

Synopsis:  A teenage girl hires a U.S. Marshal to track down the man who killed her father.

My Take:  Love the Coen Brothers and the cast looks excellent.

RT Score: 94%
RT Consensus: Girded by strong performances from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, and lifted by some of the Coens’ most finely tuned, unaffected work, True Grit is a worthy companion to the Charles Portis book.

Movies Opening June 19

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 4:36 pm

The wide releases this week look pretty sad again. Year One is wasted potential and The Proposal is another formulaic romantic comedy.  The only movie coming out this week that looks semi-interesting is the camp horror movie Dead Snow about nazi zombies. You can’t beat that!

Nationwide Releases

Year One
Directed: Harold Ramis
Starring: Jack Black, Michael Cera, Oliver Platt, David Cross, Hank Azaria
Trailer

Synopsis: A hunter and a gatherer are kicked out of their tribe so they go out on an adventure.

My Take: It looks more amusing than funny, which makes me sad since I would expect more from the cast and director.

9x9_rotten RT Score: 19%
RT Consensus: Year One is a poorly executed, slapdash comedy in which the talent both in front of and behind the camera never seem to be on the same page.

Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder
Directed: Ben Stiller
Starring: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Brandon T. Jackson, Jay Baruchel
Trailer

Synopsis: Big movie stars take themselves so seriously in a Vietnam war drama that the director decides to just drop them into the jungles of Vietnam to fend for themselves, but doesn’t tell them that.

When I first read that Robert Downey Jr. was going to be playing a black man, I didn’t know what to think. It could be so dangerous and racist, but he handles it so well, that it is just hilarious. I really love how even when his character is asked why he is staying in character, he first says he stays in character until he does the DVD commentary, and then later, has no idea why he doesn’t break character. It was that level of satire that was so awesome about the movie. There are so many actors that take the method acting to heart so much, that it is insane.

Movies Opening August 15

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 8:04 pm

There has been some protests surrounding Tropic Thunder, but that hasn’t stopped the critics from loving it. It has been Certified Fresh. Woody Allen has had some good films (Match Point) and some horrible ones (Melinda and Melinda and Scoop) lately. Vicky Cristina Barcelona appears to be one of the good ones. Mirrors wasn’t screened for critics in advance like most horror movies. It is another remake of an Asian horror movie, this time a Korean movie. The Clone Wars caused confusion since there was already cartoons made of it for television a few years ago and it seems to covering the same territory. I think George Lucas just needs to let the franchise go.

Trailer

Synopsis: Big movie stars take themselves so seriously in a Vietnam war drama that the director decides to just drop them into the jungles of Vietnam to fend for themselves, but doesn’t tell them that.

My Take: While I am not a Ben Stiller fan, this looks hilarious. Also, Robert Downey Jr. cracks me up. It looks so wrong, yet so funny.

RT Score: 84%
RT Consensus: With biting satire, plenty of subversive humor, and an unforgettable turn by Robert Downey, Jr., Tropic Thunder is a triumphant late Summer comedy.

My Take: Goofy, but fun looking movie.

RT Score: 85%
RT Consensus: Kung Fu Panda has a familiar message, but the pleasing mix of humor, swift martial arts action, and colorful animation makes for winning Summer entertainment.

Be Kind Rewind

Be Kind Rewind

Directed: Michel Gondry
Starring: Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover

Two video store guys have all their VHS tapes erased, but instead of buying new videos (or possibly upgrading to DVD), they make their own versions of the movies, hoping no one would notice.

What I loved most about this movie were the newer version of movies they created. I found them hilarious and the low-budget way they went about them was highly entertaining. They called these movies “Sweded” which is how they try to describe their technique of taking the basic movie plot and condensing it to about 20 minutes of goofiness resembling the original movie.

Trailer

Synopsis: Two video store guys have all their VHS tapes erased, but instead of buying new videos (or possibly upgrading to DVD), they make their own versions of the movies, hoping no one would notice.

My Take: I have no idea why anyone would watch VHS tapes still, but it looks hilarious.

RT Score: 69%
RT Consensus: Slighter and less disciplined than Gondry’s previous mind-benders.

The Holiday

Category: 2006,Movies,Reviewsvelveetahead @ 2:43 am

The Holiday

Directed: Nancy Meyers
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Jack Black

Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet are alone at Christmas so they participate in a house exchange where Kate goes to Los Angeles and Cameron goes to London.

Harmless, predictable fluff with pretty people (not counting Jack Black). Cameron Diaz ends up in a tiny little house in the middle of nowhere outside of London but her house does come with Jude Law, so good deal for her! It is Kate Winslet’s brother in the movie. Poor Kate Winslet ends up with Jack Black. I mean, one gets Jude Law and the other gets Jack Black? Not fair!

Beowulf
Directed: Robert Zemeckis
Starring: Ray Winstone, Crispin Glover, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins
Trailer

Synopsis: The latest motion-motion capture about the epic poem Beowulf, where he fights the demon Grendel.

My Take: I actually enjoyed the story when I read it in high school. Motion-capture does scare me, but it doesn’t look as creepy as The Polar Express.

RT Score: 72%
RT Consensus: Beowulf’s groundbreaking animation, stunning visuals, and talented cast make for an extremely entertaining time at the movies.
