Movies Opening April 1

Category: 2011,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 1:44 am

The most interesting movie released this week is not in the wide releases, but in the limited releases. It is the horror film Rubber about a killer tire. Yes, you read that right. It is getting good reviews. Craziness!

Synopsis: A guy relives the same 8 minutes over and over again so he can find the bomber of a commuter train.

My Take: Twisty, mind-bending stuff from an awesome director and you get to stare at Jake Gyllenhaal. Win win!

 RT Score: 92%
RT Consensus: Finding the human story amidst the action, director Duncan Jones and charming Jake Gyllenhaal craft a smart, satisfying sci-fi thriller.

FOX Upfronts

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:42 pm

In the middle of May every year, the networks get together to show off the new shows they picked up, congratulate those that they renewed and try not to talk about the shows they canceled. This year, FOX tried to deal with the effects of ending 24 and the waning popularity of American Idol, so it tried to outshine all of that with Glee, which seems to be its most popular show currently.

What Was Canceled

I think 24 went on a few seasons too long so I think it is good that it had its series finale this year. I’m surprised that Dollhouse was renewed for a second season, but still no one watched it, so I wasn’t surprised that it was canceled either. I enjoyed it while it was on.  Other FOX shows that were canceled that you might not know were even on the air: Brothers, Sit Down Shut Up, Sons of Tucson, Past Life, ‘Til Death and The Wanda Skyes Show.

Movies Opening January 15

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 2:38 pm

The Lovely Bones went into wide release this week. It’s reviews didn’t improve though since it is still rotten. Other than that, it is either Denzel Washington kicking ass or Jackie Chain kicking wussier ass. The only thing of interest to me is the Fish Tank British movie in limited release.

Nationwide Releases

The Book of Eli
The Spy Next Door
The Lovely Bones

The Book of Eli
Directed: Allen Hughes, Albert Hughes
Starring: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Michael Gambon, Evan Jones, Jennifer Beals
Trailer

Synopsis: It is like an updated version of The Road Warrior with a random extra plot of teaching a girl how to be a killer thrown in.

My Take: It looks like it would be mindless, stylized fun.

RT Score: 45%
RT Consensus: It’s certainly uneven, and many viewers will find that its reach exceeds its grasp, but The Book of Eli finds the Hughes brothers injecting some fresh stylish fun into the kind of post-apocalyptic wasteland filmgoers have seen more than enough of lately.

TV: Week of January 18

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 7:24 pm

This week, it is major premiere time for cable series, especially tonight. The only exception is Wednesday when Lost finally returns and FOX has its premiere of the Tim Roth show Lie to Me.  On Tuesday, it is pretty much Barack Obama inauguration. Every network station will be televising it except FOX and CW, which are instead showing new episodes of their usual night of shows. On Friday, on SCI-FI network, there will be the cable run of old canceled shows Invasion and Moonlight in case you never watched, but wanted to check them out.

Season Finale: Momma’s Boys

Pick of the Week

lost2

Lost
Channel: ABC
Time: 9/8c
Starring: Matthew Fox, Michael Emerson, Jorge Garcia, Elizabeth Mitchell, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, Terry O’Quinn, Naveen Andrews, Yunjin Kim, Henry Ian Cusick
Premieres: Wednesday, January 21
Trailer

Synopsis: All of those that got off the island, now want to get back on it to save those that they left behind, but the island apparently disappeared soon after they were rescued.

My Take: The show vastly improved since they decided on a final end date. I can’t wait for each new episode.
