For the first time, Comic Con offered something else on preview night besides opening up the exhibit hall early. It showed the pilot of the new FOX  series from JJ Abrams and his old Alias team.  The show is about an FBI agent who investigates a very bizarre terrorism event that causes everyone on a plane to have their flesh to fall off. One of her fellow agents gets infected with some form of the same chemicals as the plane people and ends up with translucent skin. She finds a professor that used to do research on all this kind of craziness, but there is a problem. He’s been in a mental institution for 17 years. oops! She needs to convince his son to grant her access to talk to him and get his help.

FOX Fall Schedule

Category: News, TVvelveetahead @ 10:07 am

FOX is another network not adding many new shows next season or holding off until midseason for them. FOX also has the added hardship of baseball messing up its fall lineup every year. They usually debut fall shows in late August while other networks wait until late September. They do this to get a jump on the competition and reel people into their shows before they lose them for a bit during the fall when baseball preempts everything.

Cloverfield

Category: 2008, Movies, Reviewsvelveetahead @ 8:39 pm

Cloverfield

Directed: Bryan Burk
Starring: Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, Odette Yustman, Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller

A monster is terrorizing New York City and a few people with camcorders record the entire thing.

We saw this at Cinetopia, where we braved the Columbia River and crossed over into Vancouver, WA. Every screen is digital and the living room theaters have waiters to take your order for fancy food to be brought to you. We had some dinner and wine with our movie. During the trailers, but even before the movie started, Jer proclaimed that we needed to see all future movies in the theater. It was quite impressive.

As for the movie, it starts out as a classified video document that the U.S. Army has found and keeping it as evidence of what happened. It begins with a going away party for a guy who just got a new job in Japan. There is some turmoil between the girl he is leaving behind and some other stuff. A friend of the guy is filming goodbye testimonials from all his friends at the party while also trying to hit on a girl he has a crush on. Between trying to identify and enjoying the party music in the background and the very natural party atmosphere, I completely forgot about the monster coming until it did.

Trailer

Synopsis: A monster is terrorizing New York City and a few people with camcorders record the entire thing.

My Take: I wanted to see it since I saw the first trailer months ago and J.J. Abrams’ name came up in the credits. I believe it is the monster from Lost that escaped the island and found New York.

JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Movie Cast

Category: Movies, Newsvelveetahead @ 9:55 pm

For those that don’t know, JJ Abrams is making the next Star Trek movie about the original cast when they were younger. He has finally finished casting it. The link to TV Guide shows pictures of everyone since I recognize most of them, but don’t recognize all their names. I love that they have the guy from Shaun of the Dead as Scotty.
