Movies Opening May 6, 2011

Category: 2011,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 4:16 pm

Thor is kicking off the summer movie season with the first superhero movie of the year. There are two romantic comedies debuting this week as well. I’m not sure if Something Borrowed is better as a novel it is based on, but the movie appears to be a shallow wreck. Jumping the Broom is a mix of romantic and family comedy with a good cast that elevates it higher than the concept would make it out to be.

In the limited releases, Hobo With a Shotgun joins Snakes on a Plane for sharing the plot in the movie title, The Beaver involves Mel Gibson and a talking puppet, and Passion Play is a movie that was so horrible it was supposed to go straight to DVD but then got this limited release for reasons unknown.

Movies Opening December 23

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 10:18 am

Up in the Air and Nine moved to wide release this week. Everyone loves Up in the Air while no one seems to like Nine.

Nationwide Releases

Sherlock Holmes
It’s Complicated
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel

Sherlock Holmes
Directed: Guy Ritchie
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Kelly Reilly
Trailer

Synopsis: An interesting take on Sherlock Holmes where he not only solves crimes but is also quite adept at fighting.

My Take: Guy Ritchie is an interesting director for the film. I would have almost expected him to make it a modern-day re-imagining of Sherlock Holmes, but it just has some modern-day elements to it, along with a good cast.

RT Score: 69%
RT Consensus: Guy Ritchie’s directorial style might not be quite the best fit for an update on the legendary detective, but Sherlock Holmes benefits from the elementary appeal of a strong performance by Robert Downey, Jr.

Movies Opening September 25

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 12:57 pm

The nationwide releases appear to be sad this week with two sci-fi flicks and another remake. The only movie that looks really interesting is the Paranormal Activity movie in the limited releases.

Nationwide Releases

Fame
Pandorum

surrogates

Surrogates
Directed: Jonathan Mostow
Starring: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, James Francis Ginty, Boris Kodjoe, Ving Rhames
Trailer

Synopsis: People “live” their lives through surrogates while they are plugged in safely at home without fear of getting physically hurt, until someone finds a way to kill people by killing their surrogates.

My Take: Interesting concept, but the trailer made it look pretty cheesy.

9x9_rotten RT Score: 39%
RT Consensus: Though it sports a slick look and feel, Surrogates fails to capitalize on a promising premise, relying instead on mindless action and a poor script.

It was so hard to pick a show of the week with so many good ones starting this week, but finally went with Bones.

Season Finales: Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, More to Love, Big Brother, Shaq Vs., The Cleaner, America’s Got Talent, Wipeout, Dark Blue, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, Eureka

Pick of the Week

bones

Bones
Channel: FOX
Time: 8/7c
Starring: Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz, Michaela Conlin, TJ Thyne, Tamara Taylor, John Francis Daley
Premieres: Thursday, September 17
Trailer

Synopsis: After thinking that Booth and Bones finally got it on, it turned out to be a dream Booth had after brain tumor surgery. He also seems to have amnesia.

My Take: I just wrote about how it took another chance, but the show won me over with the great chemistry between the cast and I love how literal Bones can be about everything.

Movies Opening June 5

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 8:40 pm

I am thrilled that the reviews for The Hangover are good since I thought it looked hilarious the first time I saw the trailer. I thought Land of the Lost looked pretty cute, so it is too bad the reviews are not as good for it.  In the limited releases, John Krasinski  stars as a soon-to-be father, Mariah Carey stars in something better than Glitter, and Nia Vardalos makes another annoying romantic comedy.

The Hangover

Trailer

Synopsis: Guys go to Vegas for a bachelor party. The groomsmen wake up the next day with a baby, a tiger, a missing tooth and no idea what happened the night before including where they misplaced the groom.

My Take: It looks so hilarious!

9x9_fresh RT Score: 76%
RT Consensus: With a clever script and hilarious interplay among the cast, The Hangover nails just the right tone of raunchy humor, and the non-stop laughs overshadow any flaw.

TV: Week of September 21

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:14 pm

This is the official season premiere week, which is why everything in the world is new. Set up those TiVo and DVRs to catch everything you want to watch!

Pick of the Week

Heroes
Channel: NBC
Time: 9/8c
Premieres: Monday, September 22 (two-hour premiere)
Starring: Masi Oka, Hayden Panettiere, Christine Rose, Adrian Pasdar, Greg Grunberg, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Ali Larter, Milo Ventimiglia, James Kyson Lee, Dania Ramirez, Zachary Quinto, Jack Coleman
Trailer

Synopsis: The season ended with Nathan Petrelli getting shot at a press conference where he was about to reveal his superpower. This season, his shooter is revealed and everyone has to deal with all the bad guys locked up in Level 5 being released.

My Take: After last season doing a poor job introducing new characters while ignoring fan favorites, this season is trying hard to win those fans back. I’ve stuck with it so far, so I’ll give it a shot.

Nationwide Releases

Leatherheads
Directed: George Clooney
Starring: George Clooney, Renee Zellweger, John Krasinski, Jonathan Pryce
Trailer

Synopsis: In 1925, a guy tries to legitimize pro football by recruiting a college football star to join his team after they have lost their sponsorship. He also flirts with a female sports writer.

My Take: Has that old-school look about it like the old screwball comedies. Looks fun.

RT Score: 54%
RT Consensus: Half screwball and half fumble. Despite a good premise and strong cast, this pro football romcom is half screwball and half fumble.
