We Bought a Zoo

Category: 2011,Movies,Reviews,Snazzle Reviewvelveetahead @ 9:24 pm

We Bought a Zoo is about a recent widower with two children who wants to start over so he finds a house out in the country that happens to be connected to a zoo. It then turns into a guy with no experience trying to run a zoo while still mourning his dead wife. It sounds ludicrous, so it has to be based on a true story or no one would believe it. Amy and I went to see it for our Snazzle Review. Then we got together to discuss what we thought about it. Warning, we do discuss some plot points so if you don’t want things spoiled, you might want to skip it.

Movies Opening July 24

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 7:34 pm

The wide releases are pretty sad and most likely movies that didn’t want to try too hard to compete against Harry Potter.  At least one limited release look good, In the Loop.

Nationwide Releases

9x9_rotten Orphan

The Ugly Truth
Directed: Robert Luketic
Starring: Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler, Cheryl Hines, John Michael Higgins, Nick Searcy
Trailer

Synopsis: A guy must teach a woman how to play all these games to “catch” the man of her dreams, but of course they’ll end up together in the end.

My Take: I like the two leads, but the story looks very unappealing.

9x9_rotten RT Score: 15%
RT Consensus: Despite the best efforts of Butler and Heigl, The Ugly Truth suffers from a weak script that relies on romantic comedy formula, with little charm or comedic payoff.

TV: Week of October 5

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 6:00 pm

It is slowing down with most shows having already premiered. Mostly there are new shows this week, along with CSI, which is my pick of the week.

Pick of the Week

CSI
Channel: CBS
Time: 9/8c
Premieres: Thursday, October 9
Starring: William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger, George Eads, Eric Szmanda, Paul Guilfoyle, Robert David Hall, Wallace Langham
Trailer

Synopsis: Warrick was gunned down by the Under Sheriff and the CSI team will try to figure out what happened to Warrick. Sara comes back to help work on the case. Grissom leaves the show halfway through the season and Laurence Fishburne will be joining the cast around the same time Grissom leaves. He’ll be playing a CSI that has the same gene that serial killers carry.

My Take: I’ll be sad with William Petersen leaving, but I love the show.

NBC New Fall Shows

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 6:05 pm

I’ll continue to recap shows the week they premiere, but I thought I should still focus on the new shows that will be premiering this upcoming fall season so you can figure out if you want to add any new shows to your viewing repertoire.

NBC New Fall Shows

My Own Worst Enemy
Channel: NBC
Time: 10/9c
Premieres: Mon, Oct 13
Starring: Christian Slater, Alfre Woodard, Mike O’Malley
Trailer

Synopsis: Henry is a normal, suburban dad, but he is also Edward, who is a highly specialized spy. His two personalities are starting to become aware of the other one.

My Take: Is it Jekyll/Hyde or Total Recall or something else altogether? I’m intriguied enough to tune in. It would be nice for Christian Slater to be good in something again.
