TV: Week of January 8

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 4:21 pm

Pick of the Week

House of Lies is about a management consultant firm where the consultants have questionable morals in order to make the most money off their clients. I’m most looking forward to this show, even though critics seemed split on it. Some really like the black comedy and the outstanding cast of Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell. Others find it soulless. I really want to like it since I would love to find something worthy of Kristen Bell’s talent after Veronica Mars.

Thor is kicking off the summer movie season with the first superhero movie of the year. There are two romantic comedies debuting this week as well. I’m not sure if Something Borrowed is better as a novel it is based on, but the movie appears to be a shallow wreck. Jumping the Broom is a mix of romantic and family comedy with a good cast that elevates it higher than the concept would make it out to be.

In the limited releases, Hobo With a Shotgun joins Snakes on a Plane for sharing the plot in the movie title, The Beaver involves Mel Gibson and a talking puppet, and Passion Play is a movie that was so horrible it was supposed to go straight to DVD but then got this limited release for reasons unknown.

Nationwide Releases

 Thor
 Something Borrowed
 Jumping the Broom

Thor
Directed
: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg, Colm Feore

Synopsis: The God of Thunder gets exiled to Earth since his ego gets too big for him and he has to figure out how to get back to his home.

 RT Score: 77%
RT Consensus: A dazzling blockbuster that tempers its sweeping scope with wit, humor, and human drama, Thor is mighty Marvel entertainment.

Movies Opening March 18

Simon Pegg is back with one of his parodies about aliens visiting Earth in Paul. Matthew McConaughey is trying to prove that he can be a serious actor again in The Lincoln Lawyer. Finally, Bradley Cooper is riding his popularity bandwagon for as long as he can by leading a movie about a crazy drug that makes him super smart in Limitless.

Nationwide Releases

Paul
The Lincoln Lawyer
Limitless

Paul
Directed
: Greg Mottola
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, John Carroll Lynch, Sigourney Weaver, Seth Rogen

Synopsis: Some geeks headed to Area 51, pick up an alien on their road trip.

My Take: It is like a twisted take on E.T. It doesn’t look super funny, but I’ll watch it since it has Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

RT Score: 72%
RT Consensus: It doesn’t measure up to Pegg and Frost’s best work, but Paul is an amiably entertaining — albeit uneven — road trip comedy with an intergalactic twist.

Movies Opening October 8

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 11:03 pm

Nothing that is coming out this week is very interesting. There is a feel-good Disney movie about a horse, a boring romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl who becomes more unlikeable as time goes on, and a stupid horror movie that doesn’t look ssary.

Nationwide Releases

Secretariat
Life as We Know It
My Soul to Take

Secretariat
Directed: Randall Wallace
Starring: Diane Lane, John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh, Scott Glenn, Dylan Baker, Margo Martindale, Nelsan Ellis
Trailer

Synopsis: Diane Lane plays a housewife that gets into horse racing while John Malkovich wears wacky outfits.

My Take: I don’t think anything can make horse racing interesting.

RT Score: 63%
RT Consensus: Rousing, heartwarming, and squarely traditional, Secretariat offers exactly what you’d expect from an inspirational Disney drama — no more, and no less.

Movies Opening March 12

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 4:57 pm

It is a pretty sad week for major releases. None of them look interesting to me. The only movie that is released during this week that I’d really want to see is Mother, which would have been my pick at the recent Portland International Film Festival.

Nationwide Releases

Green Zone
She’s Out of My League
Remember Me
Our Family Wedding

Green Zone
Directed: Paul Greengrass
Starring: Greg Kinnear, Matt Damon, Brendan Gleeson, Jason Isaacs, Khalid Abdalla, Amy Ryan
Trailer

Synopsis: An Army inspector in Baghdad in the early days of the war searches for weapons of mass destruction.

My Take: It’s from the director of the Jason Bourne movies so it has similar action, but lacks all the cool spy story stuff. End result equals boring.

RT Score: 54%
RT Consensus: Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass return to the propulsive action and visceral editing of the Bourne films — but a cliched script and stock characters keep those methods from being as effective this time around.
