The Last Exorcism could provide some cheap thrills. The Takers wants so hard to be cool, but looks like it fails. I’d rather watch the bank robber in Mesrine than any of them.

Nationwide Releases

The Last Exorcism
Takers

The Last Exorcism
Directed: Daniel Stamm
Starring: Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Iris Bahr, Louis Herthum, Caleb Landry Jones, Tony Bentley, John Wright, Jr., Shanna Forrestall, Justin Shafer
Trailer

Synopsis: A reverend goes to perform an exorcism when he runs into something a little more real than what he is used to dealing with.

My Take: I was hoping it would look scarier, but it makes me want to just want to watch The Exorcist instead.

RT Score: 52%
RT Consensus: It doesn’t fully deliver on the chilly promise of its Blair Witch-style premise, but The Last Exorcism offers a surprising number of clever thrills.

I cannot believe that Piranha is Certified Fresh. I’m just shocked. Nothing more to say.

Nationwide Releases

The Switch
Vampires Suck
Nanny McPhee Returns
Piranha 3D
Lottery Ticket

The Switch
Directed: Josh Gordon, Will Speck
Starring: Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Patrick Wilson, Jeff Goldblum, Juliette Lewis, Thomas Robinson
Trailer

Synopsis: While drunk during an insemination party, a guy that is in the “friend’s zone” with a woman accidentally spills the sperm she was going to use to get pregnant and replaces it with his own. He doesn’t remember doing this, but realizes what happens when he sees her and her kid seven years later.

My Take: The plot sounds so stupid, but I think Jason Bateman could make it worthwhile.

RT Score: 52%
RT Consensus: The Switch has an interesting premise and a charming cast; unfortunately, it also has a trite script that hews too close to tired rom-com formulas.

Kick-Ass has been Certified Fresh so it has tons of good critic reviews, even though there are a vocal minority that find it morally reprehensible, which just makes me want to watch it more. The other major release is a scene-by-scene remake of a British comedy that I didn’t find funny. If it really isn’t any different then I imagine I won’t like this one either.

Nationwide Releases

Kick-Ass
Death at a Funeral

Kick-Ass
Directed: Matthew Vaughn
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Aaron Johnson
Trailer

Synopsis: Some teens and adults decide that they need to be superheros even though they don’t have any superpowers.

My Take: It combines two of my favorite things: extreme movie violence and comedy.

RT Score: 78%
RT Consensus: Not for the faint of heart, Kick-Ass takes the comic adaptation genre to new levels of visual style, bloody violence, and gleeful profanity.

Movies Opening March 26

Category: 2010,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 11:14 am

The wide releases actually look like a good time at the movies. It’s about time.

Nationwide Releases

Hot Tub Time Machine
How to Train Your Dragon

Hot Tub Time Machine
Directed: Steve Pink
Starring: Crispin Glover, John Cusack, Lizzy Caplan, Chevy Chase, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, Craig Robinson
Trailer

Synopsis: For reasons unknown, four guys get into a hot tub and wake up in 1986 where shenanigans ensue.

My Take: It looks completely dumb and hilarious.

RT Score: 63%
RT Consensus: Its flagrantly silly script — and immensely likable cast — make up for most of its flaws.

TV: Week of September 21

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:10 pm

Fall TV Season is upon us. Even though quite a few shows got an early start this month, this week is the official season premiere week. Beware, this post will be huge!

Season Finales: Top Gear, Warehouse 13

Pick of the Week

dexter

Dexter
Channel: SHO
Time: 9/8c
Starring: Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Velez, David Zayas, James Remar
Premieres: Sunday, September 27
Trailer

Synopsis: Dexter got married and found out he had a kid on the way. Can a serial killer really have the perfect life? This season also stars a very successful serial killer for Dexter to admire, played by John Lithgow.

My Take: I keep wondering how long the show can last before it’ll burn itself out since he can’t keep killing forever, can he? But I’ll continue to watch it as it continues to be so very excellent.

TV: Week of June 22

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 6:29 pm

On Saturday, BBC America will air a Doctor Who special. It’ll be one of the last episodes starring current doctor David Tennant. In 2010, there will be a new actor taking over the role, but there will be a few more specials airing throughout the rest of this year.

Season Finales: I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!

Pick of the Week

philanthropist

The Philanthropist
Channel: NBC
Time: 10/9c
Starring: James Purefoy, Neve Campbell, Jesse L. Martin, Lindy Booth, Michael K. Williams
Premieres: Wednesday, June 24
Trailer

Synopsis: A billionaire playboy decides to spend all his money on philanthropist ideals, which takes him all around the world.

My Take: I enjoyed James Purefoy in Rome and the globe hopping (with actual shooting done in South Africa, Mozambique and Prague) interests me.

Movies Opening January 30

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 11:41 am

For Superbowl weekend, audiences have their pick of a thrill produced by Luc Benson (The Professional) that also has Liam Neeson in his first starring role; another horror remake, this time from Korea instead of Japan; and a romantic comedy where people really should be searching for Renee Zellweger’s eyes.

Nationwide Releases

Taken
The Uninvited
New in Town

taken

Taken
Directed: Pierre Morel
Starring: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Leland Orser, Jon Gries, David Warshofsky
Trailer

Synopsis: Two young girls go to Paris on vacation where they get kidnapped. Good thing one of the girl’s dad is some bad ass that will find them and mess up the guys that took them.

My Take: Watching some get the bad guys and kick their butt can be satisfying but it looks to be on the verge of eye rolling.

RT Score: 54%
RT Consensus: Taken is undeniably fun with slick action, but is largely a brainless exercise.

Movies Opening December 12

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 9:46 pm

John Leguizamo is in two movies being released this week! He shows up in the wide release holiday movie about families and then he’s in the limited release about his family being on hard times around the holidays. Do you want him funny or serious? You get your pick this week.

Nationwide Releases

Day the Earth Stood Still
Nothing Like the Holidays
Delgo

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Directed: Scott Derrickson
Starring: Keanu Reeves Jennifer Connelly, Jaden Smith, John Cleese
Trailer

Synopsis: A remake of a sci-fi classic where Keanu Reeves plays an alien who comes to Earth.

My Take: I didn’t think anyone was really clamoring for a remake of this movie.

RT Score: 20%
RT Consensus: Heavy on special effects, but without a coherent story at its base, The Day the Earth Stood Still is subpar re-imagining of the 1951 science-fiction classic.

TV: Week of September 21

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:14 pm

This is the official season premiere week, which is why everything in the world is new. Set up those TiVo and DVRs to catch everything you want to watch!

Pick of the Week

Heroes
Channel: NBC
Time: 9/8c
Premieres: Monday, September 22 (two-hour premiere)
Starring: Masi Oka, Hayden Panettiere, Christine Rose, Adrian Pasdar, Greg Grunberg, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Ali Larter, Milo Ventimiglia, James Kyson Lee, Dania Ramirez, Zachary Quinto, Jack Coleman
Trailer

Synopsis: The season ended with Nathan Petrelli getting shot at a press conference where he was about to reveal his superpower. This season, his shooter is revealed and everyone has to deal with all the bad guys locked up in Level 5 being released.

My Take: After last season doing a poor job introducing new characters while ignoring fan favorites, this season is trying hard to win those fans back. I’ve stuck with it so far, so I’ll give it a shot.
