Thor is kicking off the summer movie season with the first superhero movie of the year. There are two romantic comedies debuting this week as well. I’m not sure if Something Borrowed is better as a novel it is based on, but the movie appears to be a shallow wreck. Jumping the Broom is a mix of romantic and family comedy with a good cast that elevates it higher than the concept would make it out to be.

In the limited releases, Hobo With a Shotgun joins Snakes on a Plane for sharing the plot in the movie title, The Beaver involves Mel Gibson and a talking puppet, and Passion Play is a movie that was so horrible it was supposed to go straight to DVD but then got this limited release for reasons unknown.

Movies Opening December 18

It’s all about Avatar this week so I’m not sure why anything else bothered to come out at the same time.

Nationwide Releases

Avatar
Did You Hear About the Morgans?

Avatar
Directed: James Cameron
Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver
Trailer

Synopsis: Earth tries to take over a newly discovered planet, but doesn’t play nice with the indigenous species. The scientists want to learn by using avatars that look like the creatures while the military wants to just blow everything up.

My Take: It is supposed to be amazing looking, but the story doesn’t sound all that exciting. I think I’ll have to check it out in 3-D though to see it in the best light possible.

RT Score: 82%
RT Consensus: It might be more impressive on a technical level than as a piece of storytelling, but Avatar reaffirms James Cameron’s singular gift for imaginative, absorbing filmmaking.

Movies Opening January 9

Gran Torino moves to a wide release this week. It is the best-reviewed movie of the week in the wide release area. The other ones coming out are screechy women in Bride Wars, a relationship drama in Not Easily Broken, and the latest horror flick, Unborn.

Nationwide Releases

Unborn
Not Easily Broken

Bride Wars
Directed: Gary Winick
Starring: Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Kristen Johnson, Bryan Greenberg, Candice Bergen
Trailer

Synopsis: Two best friends end up getting married at the same place on the same date due to some mix up and neither one will give up their date so fighting ensues.

My Take: It makes sense for Kate Hudson to be in a movie like this since almost all her movies are the worst stereotype of women, but it is disappointing to see Anne Hathaway in dreck like this.

RT Score: 12%
RT Consensus: Bride Wars takes the already wearisome concept of battling bridezillas, and makes it thoroughly insufferable via a lazy script and wholly detestable characters.

Movies Released September 19

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 2:00 pm

There aren’t any real stand outs in the wide releases this week. Ghost Town looks passable, but the others can be easily skipped. the more interesting movies seem to be the limited releases. Well, at least the first two Appaloosa and The Duchess seem interesting.

Nationwide Releases

Ghost Town
Directed: David Koepp
Starring: Ricky Gervais, Tea Leoni, Greg Kinnear, Billy Campbell, Kristen Wiig, Dana Ivey, Aasif Mandi
Trailer

Synopsis: A dentist who is not a people person dies for seven minutes during surgery starts to see ghosts everywhere.

My Take: It doesn’t seem outstanding, but looks like an amusing romantic comedy saved by Ricky Gervais being funny.

RT Score: 87%
RT Consensus: Ricky Gervais’ consistently sharp performance and beautifully dry execution transform this otherwise mainstream comedy into an endearing, funny, and altogether snappy romantic comedy. With ghosts.

Why is there another Paris Hilton movie? Wasn’t her getting killed in House of Wax enough?

Nationwide Releases

Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights – Hollywood to the Heartland
Directed: Ari Sandel
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Ahmed Ahmed, John Caparulo, Bret Ernst, Sebastian Maniscalco, Peter Billingsley, Dwight Yoakam, Justin Long, Buck Owens, Jon Favreau
Trailer

Synopsis: Vince Vaughn picked four comedians to take on a comedy tour with him across America. Features on stage and behind the scenes footage.

My Take: I do like stand-up comedy, but the part I laughed at the most in the trailer was the audience member who answered Vince Vaughn’s question at the very end about what he does in Lubbock.

RT Score: 54%
RT Consensus: Has some entertaining moments, but is a mostly hit-and-miss documentary.
