TV: Week of March 4, 2012

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 9:09 am

There is a lot of breaking going on this week with both Breaking In and Breakout Kings coming back for their second seasons. I hope people don’t get them confused though. They might be a tad different but I guess they are both “workplace” shows.

Pick of the Week

Breaking In was cancelled with tons of other shows on FOX last year. Then it had its best ratings after the cancellation announcement. Even though it wasn’t super high ratings, it was enough to make FOX reconsider their decision. They decided to bring it back for another season. Will it last this time? They are bringing on Megan Mullally as a new boss and she clashes a bit with Christian Slater’s Oz character.

Breaking In

Breaking In
Channel: FOX
Time: 9:30/8:30c
Starring: Christian Slater, Megan Mullally, Bret Harrison, Alphonso McAuley, Odette Annable, Erin Richards
Premieres: Tuesday, March 6

Movies Opening May 6, 2011

Thor is kicking off the summer movie season with the first superhero movie of the year. There are two romantic comedies debuting this week as well. I’m not sure if Something Borrowed is better as a novel it is based on, but the movie appears to be a shallow wreck. Jumping the Broom is a mix of romantic and family comedy with a good cast that elevates it higher than the concept would make it out to be.

In the limited releases, Hobo With a Shotgun joins Snakes on a Plane for sharing the plot in the movie title, The Beaver involves Mel Gibson and a talking puppet, and Passion Play is a movie that was so horrible it was supposed to go straight to DVD but then got this limited release for reasons unknown.

Nationwide Releases

TV: Week of March 6

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 8:35 pm

All the new shows are on tonight. Later on this week, The Event comes back from hiatus. You might have forgotten this show even existed. The critics that have seen the two-hour comeback episode have given it a resounding “ehhhh” review. I don’t believe it’ll be on the air much longer. On a sadder note, Stargate Universe will start showing its final 10 episodes and when it ends there will be no Stargate shows on the air anymore. Tiny tears. The season finales for this week are Southland, White Collar and The Defenders.

Pick of the Week

Breakout Kings
Channel:
A&E
Time: 10/9c
Starring:
Laz Alonso, Domenick Lombardozzi, Brooke Nevin, Jimmi Simpson, Malcolm Goodwin, Erica Reed
Premieres: Sunday, March 6

Synopsis: U.S. Marshalls make a deal with some cons to help them catch other criminals that have broken out of prison. For each one they help them catch, they get time shaved off their sentence.

My Take: It’s a similar premise to White Collar, but a bit grittier. It also has one of the many creepy guys from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and he looks like the much needed comic relief.

Movies Released September 26

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 12:05 pm

None of the wide releases seem super interesting this week. There is a WWII war movie that has the most potential. There is also some stupid thriller, mushy older people love story, and marriage-on-the-rocks fable that only having faith God can save. The limited releases don’t look much better. There are tons of documentaries and only Choke seems interesting to me this week.

Nationwide Releases

Miracle at St. Anna
Directed: Spike Lee
Starring: Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, Laz Alonso, Omar Benson Miller
Trailer

Synopsis: During World War II, an all-black unit gets separated from the other troops in Tuscany, Italy. They must fend for themselves and risk their lives to save an Italian boy.

My Take: It seems like an interesting story that just happens to be set during a World War.

RT Score: 27%
RT Consensus: Miracle at St. Anna is a well-intentioned but overlong, disjointed affair that hits few of the right notes.
