ABC Fall TV 2011

Category: Fall TV,TVvelveetahead @ 2:38 pm

ABC has thirteen new shows debuting this fall and early next year. Where did it find the room to fit all these shows? By canceling a bunch of low performers like No Ordinary Family, Better With You, Detroit 1-8-7, Mr. Sunshine and Off the Map. A minor surprise was the cancellation of V. It had a rough start its first season, but was a bit more focused when it came back for a second season. I couldn’t get past the almost all of the show taking place against a very bad green screen. I found it so distracting, I didn’t know what was going on.

Movies Opening February 4

Category: 2011,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 6:15 pm

I was watching the trailer for Cold Weather and thought I saw what looked like North Portland, but I wasn’t sure. Then I saw someone on the bridge at Multnomah Falls. Finally, I saw them driving down NE Glisan Street and confirmed it was filmed in Portland. I seem to miss when movies are filmed here, even though my bus route goes down Glisan. I guess I’m clueless.

Nationwide Releases

Sanctum
The Roommate

Sanctum
Directed: Alister Grierson
Starring: Richard Roxburgh, Rhys Wakefield, Ioan Gruffudd, Alice Parkinson, Dan Wyllie

Synopsis: People go into a super deep cave and then get trapped there.

My Take: I think I’d  rather watch another movie spent in a cave that is filled with actual tension — Descent.

RT Score: 31%
RT Consensus: Sanctum is beautifully photographed, and it makes better use of 3-D technology than most, but that doesn’t make up for its ham-handed script and lifeless cast.

Movies Opening July 17

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 2:29 pm

Two movies I want to see come out this week. The most recent Harry Potter and 500 Days of Summer. I really like Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so I hope it is adorable and not too quirky.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Directed: David Yates
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Jim Broadbent
Trailer

Synopsis: The sixth in the series where Harry learns about the childhood of Voldemort while the kids all fall in love.

My Take: I have to see all the movies since I loved the book series. I’m also curious how they’ll make an action-packed movie when most of the book was spent in flashbacks.

9x9_fresh RT Score: 84%
RT Consensus: Dark, thrilling, and occasionally quite funny, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is also visually stunning and emotionally satisfying.

TV: Week of January 11

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 4:19 pm

This week is the official start of 24 since the movie in November was just to tie the last season and this current season together. For those that have DirectTV, they have already seen the season of Friday Night Lights that is now playing on NBC. It is the final season for Battlestar Galactica and soon American Idol will dominate the airwaves while I hope its ratings continue to die so it doesn’t take over so much tv every winter and spring like it has done the past few years.

Season Finales: Real Chance of Love

Pick of the Week

241

24
Channel: FOX
Time: 8/7c
Starring: Kiefer Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Carlos Bernard, Annie Wersching, Cherry Jones, James Morrison, Jeffrey Nordling, Janeane Garofalo, Rhys Coiro, Colm Feore, Bob Gunton
Premieres: Sunday, January 11
Trailer

Synopsis: Jack Bauer is on trial in Washington, D.C. and Tony is back from the dead as the bad guy. It’s time for Jack to save the day again.

My Take: I quit watching halfway through season six since it wasn’t just beyond ridiculous but it was also boring. I am going to give it another shot to see if the extended break gave it any sort of breather it needed to revive itself back to its former glory. I found the 24: Redemption movie closer to the old version of the show so I have hope.
