Movies Opening October 22

Hereafter was in limited release last week, but moved into wide release this week. I am not sure why they made a sequel to Paranormal Activity 2, but it seems to be getting decent reviews.

Nationwide Releases

Paranormal Activity 2
Hereafter

Paranormal Activity 2
Directed: Tod Williams
Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Brian Boland, Molly Ephraim, Sprague Grayden, Seth Ginsberg
Trailer

Synopsis: It is a sequel that is really a prequel about a family that thinks it has been robbed so they set up surveillance, but find out something else is going on instead.

My Take: The premise sounds intriguing and it seems to be the same spooky movie that would make me jump all over the place like an idiot.

RT Score: 61%
RT Consensus: Paranormal Activity 2 doesn’t cover any new ground, but its premise is still scary — and in some respects, it’s a better film than the original.

The only movie worth paying attention to this week is Inglourious Basterds with its horrible spelling and all. Also, even though I am not a Robin Williams fan, his limited release movie World’s Greatest Dad looks pretty funny and it is directed by Bobcat Goldthwait!

Inglourious Basterds
Directed: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, BJ Novak, Mike Myers, Diane Kruger
Trailer

Synopsis: Brad Pitt leads a group of Jewish soldiers that are killing Nazis behind enemy lines during World War II.

My Take: As much as I’m tired of WWII movies, it is Tarantino so I must see it.

9x9_fresh RT Score: 86%
RT Consensus: A classic Tarantino genre-blending thrill ride, Inglourious Basterds is violent, unrestrained, and thoroughly entertaining.

Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who
Directed: Jimmy Hayward, Steve Martino
Starring: Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Carol Burnett

My Take: Animation looks awesome and seems cute without being overly cloying.

RT Score: 82%
RT Consensus: Stays true to the spirit of Dr. Seuss’ classic story. Horton Hears A Who! is both whimsical and heartwarming, and is the rare Dr. Seuss adaptation that stays true to the spirit of the source material.

Why is there another Paris Hilton movie? Wasn’t her getting killed in House of Wax enough?

Nationwide Releases

Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights – Hollywood to the Heartland
Directed: Ari Sandel
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Ahmed Ahmed, John Caparulo, Bret Ernst, Sebastian Maniscalco, Peter Billingsley, Dwight Yoakam, Justin Long, Buck Owens, Jon Favreau
Trailer

Synopsis: Vince Vaughn picked four comedians to take on a comedy tour with him across America. Features on stage and behind the scenes footage.

My Take: I do like stand-up comedy, but the part I laughed at the most in the trailer was the audience member who answered Vince Vaughn’s question at the very end about what he does in Lubbock.

RT Score: 54%
RT Consensus: Has some entertaining moments, but is a mostly hit-and-miss documentary.
